Update Playbooks: Keep Ansible Roles in Sync with Upstream
A skill that detects version, method, and link drift in Ansible playbooks, then updates them per tool.
Where this fits
You maintain a set of Ansible roles, each with install tasks pinned to a specific version and a comment URL pointing to upstream docs. Over time, those pins drift: Node releases a patch, kubectl changes its recommended install method, or a doc page moves. Manually checking each task against upstream is tedious and error-prone. This skill automates that reconciliation.
Why agents benefit
- Detects all three drift types (version, method, link) from the same comment URL above each install task.
- Respects release lines—bumps stay within the stable series (e.g.,
24.15.0→24.18.x) instead of jumping major versions. - Uses
gh apiandcurlto fetch real upstream release data and doc URLs, not guesses. - Runs
make lintafter edits to ensure the updated playbook still passes validation. - Commits per tool, keeping changes isolated and reviewable.
Practical scenarios
Bumping a pinned version within a release line
Your Node.js role pins 24.15.0, but upstream now ships 24.18.2. The skill reads the comment URL, fetches the latest release for the 24.x line, and updates the version in tasks/main.yml—then commits that single change.
Adopting a newly recommended install method
Kubectl used to be installed via curl binary download; upstream now recommends apt from the official repo. The skill compares the current task against the doc's instructions and rewrites the task to match the new method, including any needed package or repo setup.
Repointing a moved doc link
The comment URL above an install task returns a 404. The skill searches upstream for the new location, updates the comment, and verifies the link resolves before committing.
Add it to your agent workflow
Install the skill with:
npx skills add vinta/hal-9000 --skill update-playbooks
Then invoke it when you notice drift. For example, ask your agent: "Update the Ansible playbooks against upstream docs." The skill will scan playbooks/roles/*/tasks/main.yml, identify all drift, apply updates per tool, and commit each change separately. Review the commits before pushing—the skill does not auto-merge.
Compare before adopting
Check the skill's maintenance freshness (last commit, open issues) and quality signals like the author's other work and test coverage. Compare with alternatives: you could write a cron job to check versions, but this skill also handles method and link drift. Evaluate whether your playbook structure matches the expected roles/*/tasks/main.yml layout and if your workflow tolerates per-tool commits.
Why it is worth tracking
With 127 stars and a focused scope, update-playbooks addresses a real pain point for Ansible maintainers. Its use of release-line awareness and upstream verification via gh api sets it apart from naive version bumpers. As your roles grow, this skill can save hours of manual doc-checking. Re-evaluate it when your playbook patterns change or if the skill's allowed-tools list feels too restrictive. For a deeper look, see the skill page on OpenAgentSkill.
