Стара періодика
Газета дає те, чого не дає жодна книжка: імена живих людей при їхніх заняттях, а не при смерті. Мартиролог називає людину, коли її розстріляли; довідник називає село, коли рахували двори. Газета називає людину, коли вона отримала премію, засудила сусіда, шукала сина або продавала корову.
Одна знахідка для калібрування: у обласній газеті 1934 року стояло оголошення матері про розшук двох синів, залишених у Києві. Такого не дає ні мартиролог, ні довідник, ні архівний опис, і жодне вторинне джерело про цю родину не знає нічого.
Ціна цього - робота зі словом. Портал вʼяже статтю до тієї словоформи, що стоїть у тексті, і ваша назва в називному відмінку може не збігтися з жодною згадкою в архіві за сто років. Тому головна частина цього скіла не про пошук, а про ключі: references/kliuchi.md.
Порядок
- Каталог перед пошуком. Дізнайтеся, які видання взагалі є за ваш район і роки. Районні газети часто не оцифровані взагалі, і це варто знати до того, як шукати.
- Ключі. Не один запит, а перебір словоформ. Порожня видача за одним написанням не означає нічого.
- Видача. Прочитати заголовки й сніпети, відсіяти шум.
- Вирізок. Витягти саму замітку зі скану, не читати шпальту цілком.
- Цитата - тільки з прочитаного очима.
Пʼять правил, кожне оплачене прогоном
Порожня видача це не мовчання газети
Найдорожча помилка каналу виглядає як результат: «у пресі про це село нічого немає». Один випадок: село пів року стояло в реєстрі як «порожньо у власній видачі», і це означало не мовчання газети, а те, що шукали не те слово. З восьми випробуваних написань матеріал дала рівно одна форма.
Порядок, коли видача порожня: спершу відмінки, потім дореформені форми, потім прикметник обома словотворами, потім сусіди по кущу й райцентр, і лише тоді «порожньо». Подробиці й приклади - references/kliuchi.md.
Число результатів не є числом згадок
Значна частина видачі це реклама й оголошення, у яких назва стоїть випадково, а лічильник рахує їх нарівні зі змістовими замітками. «Знайдено 214» це число рядків, а не число згадок про ваше село.
Це той самий клас, що й будь-який лічильник збігів: він рахує входження рядка, а не те, що вас цікавить. Змістових серед двохсот буває три.
Пошук і читання це два різні права
На платних архівах доступ до пошуку і доступ до повного скану видаються окремо, і сесія може мати перше без другого. Виміряно дорого: агент знайшов шістнадцять статей і не зміг процитувати жодної, бо передплата була неактивна, а передпольотна перевірка пінгувала відкритий каталог і казала «сесія жива».
Тому перевіряйте не «чи відкривається сайт», а чи відкривається сам скан. І якщо ні, розрізняйте дві причини: протухла сесія лікується новою кукою, неактивна передплата не лікується нічим, крім грошей. Знайдені сніпети при цьому не марні - це перелік адрес, за якими читати, щойно доступ зʼявиться.
Вирізок замість шпальти
Портали віддають координати блоків статті разом зі сканом сторінки. Це означає, що газету шпальтою читати не треба: замітка вирізається зі скану за координатами й розгортається до читабельного одним -resize.
Різниця не в зручності, а в ціні. Шпальта, віддана моделі очима, це десятки тисяч токенів і половина з них чужі оголошення; вирізок на 350x800 px це одна замітка.
Цитувати можна тільки прочитане
Сніпет із видачі це не джерело. Він обрізаний посередині речення, у ньому OCR, і в ньому немає контексту, який міняє зміст. У текст іде тільки те, що прочитане з самого скану.
Що ще ламається тихо
OCR старої періодики має три поломки, які не дають помилки: пошук просто знаходить менше, і ви цього не бачите. Перенос слова, переданий літерою; нуль, розпізнаний як «О»; текстовий шар, якого насправді немає або який набраний легасі-шрифтом. Кожна коштувала окремого дня. Там-таки про вибір двигуна: різниця між двигунами велика, різниця між режимами одного двигуна дорівнює шуму, і витрачатися варто рівно на перше.
