A foundational copywriting skill that produces persuasive, human, conversion-focused copy grounded in globally recognized principles like AIDA, PAS, Cialdini, Ogilvy, and more. Use this skill whenever the user wants to write, review, rewrite, or improve any piece of copy: headlines, landing pages, marketing or transactional emails, ads, product descriptions, CTAs, social posts, sales pages, or any other content meant to move a reader toward an action. Also trigger when the user asks to \"make this more persuasive\", \"improve this copy\", \"write a hook\", \"make this sell better\", or references any copywriting framework by name. If the user is writing for a brand, product, or audience — use this skill.
Source documentation, not instructions for this website. Review permissions before running any commands.
This skill produces persuasive, conversion-focused copy. Every decision — structure, word choice, length, tone — serves one goal: move the reader to act. Copy exists to produce action, not to impress.
Every structural, tonal, and word-level decision is subordinate to: does this produce the desired action? If it doesn't, revise it.
If the user provides an image, template, mockup, or describes an existing design, do this before writing anything:
If no visual is provided, skip to Phase 1.
If any of the following are unknown or ambiguous from context, ask the user before writing. Do not assume and proceed — wrong inputs produce wrong copy.
Ask if missing:
If all of the above are clear from context, state the assumptions made and proceed.
Don't layer frameworks. Pick the one that fits the job, then execute it cleanly.
Run every piece through this before it ships:
| Standard | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Clear | Would a 12-year-old understand this immediately? |
| Concise | Can any sentence be cut without losing meaning? |
| Compelling | Would someone who doesn't need this product still find it interesting to read? |
| Credible | Is every claim supported? Does it feel trustworthy? |
If any answer is no — revise before moving on.
These are psychological truths from Cialdini's Influence, applied ethically:
These apply regardless of framework:
Match copy to where the reader is in their journey. Misalignment is the most common reason good copy fails.
| Stage | Reader's State | Copy's Job |
|---|---|---|
| Top of Funnel (TOFU) | Discovering the problem | Educate, empathize, build trust |
| Middle of Funnel (MOFU) | Evaluating options | Differentiate, demonstrate authority |
| Bottom of Funnel (BOFU) | Ready to decide | Remove doubt, drive action, confirm the choice |
A reader at BOFU doesn't need an explainer. They need reassurance and a frictionless path forward.

If the user is writing for a brand, product, or audience — use this skill." --- # Copywriting Skill This skill produces persuasive, conversion-focused copy. Every decision — structure, word choice, length, tone — serves one goal: move the reader to act. Copy exists to produce action, not to impress. --- ## The One Governing Rule Every structural, tonal, and word-level decision is subordinate to: does this produce the desired action? If it doesn't, revise it. --- ## Phase 0: Visual/Design Intake (if assets are provided) If the user provides an image, template, mockup, or describes an existing design, do this before writing anything: 1. **Audit what the visual already communicates** — emotion, context, product state, demographic signal. List it explicitly. 2. **Identify the gap** — what is the visual *not* saying? That gap is what the copy must fill. Usually: the "so what," the benefit, or the CTA. 3. **Treat headline + visual as one unit** — the headline should complete or reframe the visual, not caption it. If the image shows a product in use, the copy shouldn't describe what it does — it should say what it means. 4. **Check tonal alignment** — a mismatch between the visual's tone and the copy's register creates friction. Flag it if misaligned and adjust copy tone to match. If no visual is provided, skip to Phase 1. --- ## Phase 1: Clarifying Questions Before Writing If any of the following are unknown or ambiguous from context, ask the user before writing. Do not assume and proceed — wrong inputs produce wrong copy. **Ask if missing:** - **Audience** — Who is this for? What is the one thing stopping them from already having this? What language do they use to describe their problem? - **Goal** — What specific action should the reader take after reading this? - **Funnel stage** — Are they discovering the problem (TOFU), evaluating options (MOFU), or ready to decide (BOFU)? - **Tone** — What register fits the brand and audience? (e.g. authoritative, conversational, urgent, warm, dry) - **Single problem** — What one pain or desire does this copy address? Resist solving multiple problems in one piece. - **Transformation** — What does the reader's situation look like before vs. after? The copy lives in that gap. If all of the above are clear from context, state the assumptions made and proceed. --- ## Phase 2: Structure — Choose One Framework Per Piece Don't layer frameworks. Pick the one that fits the job, then execute it cleanly. ### AIDA *(attention → conversion - best for ads, marketing emails, landing pages)* - **Attention** — Open with a hook that makes ignoring impossible: a sharp question, a provocative claim, a specific number, or a relatable scenario. - **Interest** — Expand the hook. Show you understand their world. Be relevant, not clever. Use tangible solutions over philosophical explanations. - **Desire** — Make them want the outcome. Show transformation. - **Action** — One clear CTA. Tell them exactly what to do next. ### PAS *(problem → urgency → relief — best for pain-point-driven problem statements)* - **Problem** — Name it plainly. The reader should think: *"That's exactly it."* - **Agitation** — Deepen the cost of not solving it. What is inaction costing them? - **Solution** — Present your offer as the natural, inevitable answer. Not a pitch, rather a resolution. ### BAB *(transformation — best for before/after storytelling)* - **Before** — Describe the current struggle in vivid, relatable terms. - **After** — Paint the improved state. Be specific instead of vague. "Saves 3 hours a week" always has a bigger impact than "saves time." - **Bridge** — Your product/service is the bridge. Explain how it gets them there. ### 4 Ps *(promise → proof — best for sales pages, high-consideration offers)* - **Promise** — Lead with the benefit, not the feature. What's in it for them? - **Picture** — Make the outcome tangible. Use sensory and emotional language. - **Proof** — Back it up: testimonials, data, credentials, case studies. Logic follows emotion. - **Push** — Recap and drive to action. Remove friction. Create urgency without manipulation. --- ## Phase 3: The 4 C's — Quality Check on Every Draft Run every piece through this before it ships: | Standard | Question to ask | |---|---| | **Clear** | Would a 12-year-old understand this immediately? | | **Concise** | Can any sentence be cut without losing meaning? | | **Compelling** | Would someone who doesn't need this product still find it interesting to read? | | **Credible** | Is every claim supported? Does it feel trustworthy? | If any answer is no — revise before moving on. --- ## Phase 4: Persuasion Principles (Use Selectively, Never Manipulatively) These are psychological truths from Cialdini's *Influence*, applied ethically: - **Reciprocity** — Give something valuable before asking for anything. Readers who receive value first are more likely to reciprocate. - **Social Proof** — Specific testimonials, user numbers, and named results outperform vague claims every time. - **Authority** — Establish credibility early. Credentials, track records, and expertise reduce friction. - **Scarcity / Urgency** — Only use when real. Manufactured urgency destroys trust faster than any other tactic. - **Specificity** — "47 customers" is more believable than "many customers." Specific details signal honesty. --- ## Phase 5: Line-Level Principles These apply regardless of framework: - **Write "you," not "we"** — The reader's world is the center of gravity, not yours. - **Features → Benefits** — FAB rule: A feature describes the product. A benefit describes the reader's life after the product. - **Headlines are 80% of the work** — If the headline fails, nothing else is read. Write 10 before choosing 1. - **One idea per sentence. One job per paragraph.** - **The first sentence exists to get the second one read.** — And so on, down the page. - **End on action, not summary** — Close with a CTA, not a recap. Tell the reader exactly what to do and why now. --- ## Funnel Awareness Match copy to where the reader is in their journey. Misalignment is the most common reason good copy fails. | Stage | Reader's State | Copy's Job | |---|---|---| | **Top of Funnel (TOFU)** | Discovering the problem | Educate, empathize, build trust | | **Middle of Funnel (MOFU)** | Evaluating options | Differentiate, demonstrate authority | | **Bottom of Funnel (BOFU)** | Ready to decide | Remove doubt, drive action, confirm the choice | A reader at BOFU doesn't need an explainer. They need reassurance and a frictionless path forward. --- ## Common Failures to Avoid - **Writing about the product instead of the reader** — Nobody buys a drill; they buy a hole in the wall. - **Burying the lead** — The most important thing goes first, always. - **Vague proof** — "Loved by thousands" means nothing. "4,800 teams use it daily" means something. - **Weak CTAs** — "Click here" competes with "Start your free trial today — no credit card needed." One of these converts. - **Over-engineering** — Using multiple frameworks in one piece creates confusion, not persuasion. - **Writing for search before writing for humans** — SEO follows good copy. It never replaces it. - **Writing in isolation when the piece is part of a series** — Before writing, audit what already exists in the same body of work. Note the angles, phrases, structural moves, and proof points already used. Every new piece should earn its place by saying something the others don't. Repeated angles flatten the impact of all pieces, even when the words differ. - **Dramatising a challenge when the subject is a real person or partner** — PAS-style agitation works for ads. It backfires when the copy is about someone — a customer, a collaborator, a case study subject. Frame challenges as natural ceilings that come with growth, not as failures or dysfunction. The product helps them go further; it doesn't rescue them. - **Generic benefits** — "Saves time" is a feature in disguise. A benefit only lands when it's situated: a specific change, for a specific person, in a specific context. "She walks into every client call already prepared" earns its place. "Saves time on prep" doesn't. --- ## Output Standards When producing copy under this skill: 1. Always clarify the **goal** (what action should the reader take?) and the **audience** (who are they, what do they fear/want?) before writing — if not already clear from context. 2. State which **framework** was used and why. 3. Offer a **headline variant** and a **CTA variant** alongside the main copy unless the user specifies otherwise. 4. Flag any **assumptions** made about audience, tone, or offer. 5. Keep revisions focused — one lever at a time (structure, tone, proof, CTA).
