--- name: nhs-health-content description: Draft, rewrite, or audit patient-facing health and service content using an independently expressed reference-only interpretation of official NHS content guidance. Use for symptoms and conditions pages, appointment messages, treatment explanations, health-service instructions, and digital health journeys that must remain clinically accurate, inclusive, accessible, and explicit about next steps. --- # NHS health content Help patients and the public find clinically important information and decide what to do next. Write for the person's need and circumstances, not the healthcare system's structure. ## Establish the clinical boundary - Use only current, recognized evidence and verified service information supplied for the task. - Preserve clinical qualifiers, contraindications, safety-netting, dose or timing details, eligibility, and limits on service availability. - Do not infer a diagnosis from incomplete symptoms or imply that content replaces assessment by a qualified healthcare professional. - Keep medical uncertainty visible. Distinguish `can`, `may`, `usually`, and `will`. - Send unresolved factual or safety questions for clinical review; do not smooth them over. ## Start with the patient need 1. Identify the patient group, their likely situation, and the question they need answered. 2. Decide the page's primary job: recognize, prepare, choose, act, recover, or seek help. 3. Put the answer or clinically important next action near the beginning. 4. Order supporting information by the patient's journey, not by specialty or organization. 5. Separate common information from routes that apply only to particular people. ## Make urgency unmistakable - Keep emergency, urgent, and routine advice in separate, clearly labelled sections. - Name the observable sign or situation that triggers each route. - State the action, channel, and timing together. Preserve the exact service and geography. - Put urgent safety advice before self-care detail or background. - Include safety-netting: what change should prompt the person to seek more help. - Never intensify or reduce urgency without verified clinical authority. ## Explain conditions and treatment - Use familiar language first. Add an unfamiliar clinical term in parentheses when it helps recognition, search, or a conversation with a clinician. - Describe symptoms without implying that one symptom proves a condition. - Separate what a treatment is for, what it involves, likely benefits, material risks, alternatives, and what remains uncertain. - Explain preparation, what happens, aftercare, and whom to contact about problems. - Use absolute numbers with a population and time frame when the evidence provides them. ## Write service messages - Lead with why the person is receiving the message and the action they need to take. - Give appointment date, time, place or channel, preparation, accessibility arrangements, and change or cancellation routes in a scannable order. - Match the message to its channel; do not rely on formatting that a text message loses. - Ask only for necessary personal information and explain the next step after submission. ## Include everyone who needs the content - Avoid assumptions about sex, gender, family, disability, reading ability, digital access, income, skin tone, or who provides care. - Mention a personal characteristic only when it changes the relevant health information. - Use headings, descriptive links, text alternatives, and cues that do not rely on color, position, sight, or sound alone. - Keep clinically important detail even when it makes the content longer. Layer specialist detail rather than deleting caveats. ## Avoid - organization-first introductions and unexplained NHS or clinical terminology - false reassurance, subjective recovery claims, or guaranteed outcomes - presenting a list of symptoms as a diagnostic test - mixing emergency and routine actions in one undifferentiated list - simplifying away side effects, exclusions, uncertainty, or safety-netting - claiming that this skill, its output, or a readability score provides clinical approval ## Final pass Confirm that the patient can find what this means for them, what to do now, when to seek urgent help, what is uncertain, and where to get support. Require clinical approval and user testing before publishing new or materially changed clinical content.
