A technically broken site cannot be crawled, indexed, or cited by any platform. This skill audits 8 categories of technical health with specific attention to GEO requirements — most critically, **server-side rendering** (AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript) and **AI crawler access** (many sites inadvertently block AI crawlers in robots.txt).\n\n## How to Use This Skill\n\n1. Collect the target URL (homepage + 2-3 key inner pages)\n2. Fetch each page using curl/WebFetch to get raw HTML and HTTP headers\n3. Run through each of the 8 audit categories below\n4. Score each category using the rubric\n5. Generate GEO-TECHNICAL-AUDIT.md with results\n\n---\n\n## Category 1: Crawlability (15 points)\n\n### 1.1 robots.txt Validity\n- Fetch `https://[domain]/robots.txt`\n- Check for syntactic validity: proper `User-agent`, `Allow`, `Disallow` directives\n- Check for common errors: missing User-agent, wildcards blocking important paths, Disallow: / blocking entire site\n- Verify XML sitemap is referenced: `Sitemap: https://[domain]/sitemap.xml`\n\n### 1.2 AI Crawler Access (CRITICAL for GEO)\nCheck robots.txt for directives targeting these AI crawlers:\n\n| Crawler | User-Agent | Platform |\n|---|---|---|\n| GPTBot | GPTBot | ChatGPT / OpenAI |\n| Google-Extended | Google-Extended | Gemini / Google AI training |\n| Googlebot | Googlebot | Google Search + AI Overviews |\n| Bingbot | bingbot | Bing Copilot + ChatGPT (via Bing) |\n| PerplexityBot | PerplexityBot | Perplexity AI |\n| ClaudeBot | ClaudeBot | Anthropic Claude |\n| Amazonbot | Amazonbot | Alexa / Amazon AI |\n| CCBot | CCBot | Common Crawl (used by many AI models) |\n| FacebookBot | FacebookExternalHit | Meta AI |\n| Bytespider | Bytespider | TikTok / ByteDance AI |\n| Applebot-Extended | Applebot-Extended | Apple Intelligence |\n\n**Scoring for AI crawler access:**\n- All major AI crawlers allowed: 5 points\n- Some blocked but Googlebot + Bingbot allowed: 3 points\n- GPTBot or PerplexityBot blocked: 1 point (significant GEO impact)\n- Googlebot blocked: 0 points (fatal)\n\n**Important nuance**: Blocking Google-Extended does NOT block Googlebot. Google-Extended only controls AI training data usage, not search indexing. However, blocking Google-Extended may reduce presence in AI Overviews. Recommend allowing Google-Extended unless there is a specific data licensing concern.\n\n### 1.3 XML Sitemaps\n- Fetch sitemap (check robots.txt for location, or try `/sitemap.xml`, `/sitemap_index.xml`)\n- Validate XML syntax\n- Check for `<lastmod>` dates (should be present and accurate)\n- Count URLs — compare to expected number of indexable pages\n- Check for sitemap index if large site (50,000+ URLs per sitemap max)\n- Verify all sitemap URLs return 200 status codes (sample check)\n\n### 1.4 Crawl Depth\n- Homepage = depth 0. Check that all important pages are reachable within **3 clicks** (depth 3)\n- Pages at depth 4+ receive significantly less crawl budget and are less likely to be cited by AI\n- Check internal linking: are key content pages linked from the homepage or main navigation?\n\n### 1.5 Noindex Management\n- Check for `<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"noindex\">` on pages that SHOULD be indexed\n- Check for `X-Robots-Tag: noindex` HTTP headers\n- Common mistakes: noindex on paginated pages, category pages, or key landing pages\n\n**Category Scoring:**\n| Check | Points |\n|---|---|\n| robots.txt valid and complete | 3 |\n| AI crawlers allowed | 5 |\n| XML sitemap present and valid | 3 |\n| Crawl depth within 3 clicks | 2 |\n| No erroneous noindex directives | 2 |\n\n---\n\n## Category 2: Indexability (12 points)\n\n### 2.1 Canonical Tags\n- Every indexable page must have a `<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"...\">` tag\n- Canonical must point to itself (self-referencing) for the authoritative version\n- Check for conflicting canonicals (canonical in HTML vs. HTTP header)\n- Check for canonical chains (A canonicals to B, B canonicals to C — should be A to C)\n\n### 2.2 Duplicate Content\n- Check for www vs. non-www (both should resolve, one should redirect)\n- Check for HTTP vs. HTTPS (HTTP should redirect to HTTPS)\n- Check for trailing slash consistency (pick one pattern and redirect the other)\n- Check for parameter-based duplicates (`?sort=price` creating duplicate pages)\n\n### 2.3 Pagination\n- If paginated content exists, check for `rel=\"next\"` / `rel=\"prev\"` (note: Google ignores these as of 2019, but Bing still uses them)\n- Preferred: use `rel=\"canonical\"` on paginated pages pointing to a view-all page or the first page\n- Ensure paginated pages are not noindexed if they contain unique content\n\n### 2.4 Hreflang (international sites)\n- Check for `<link rel=\"alternate\" hreflang=\"xx\">` tags\n- Validate: reciprocal hreflang (if page A points to page B, B must point back to A)\n- Validate: x-default fallback exists\n- Check for language/region code validity (ISO 639-1 / ISO 3166-1)\n\n### 2.5 Index Bloat\n- Estimate number of indexed pages (check sitemap count, use `site:domain.com` estimate)\n- Compare indexed pages to actual valuable content pages\n- Flag if indexed pages significantly exceed content pages (index bloat from thin/duplicate/parameter pages)\n\n**Category Scoring:**\n| Check | Points |\n|---|---|\n| Canonical tags correct on all pages | 3 |\n| No duplicate content issues | 3 |\n| Pagination handled correctly | 2 |\n| Hreflang correct (if applicable) | 2 |\n| No index bloat | 2 |\n\n---\n\n## Category 3: Security (10 points)\n\n### 3.1 HTTPS Enforcement\n- Site must load over HTTPS\n- HTTP must redirect to HTTPS (301 redirect)\n- No mixed content warnings (HTTP resources on HTTPS pages)\n- SSL/TLS certificate must be valid and not expired\n\n### 3.2 Security Headers\nCheck HTTP response headers for:\n\n| Header | Required Value | Purpose |\n|---|---|---|\n| `Strict-Transport-Security` | `max-age=31536000; There is no desktop crawling. If your site does not work on mobile, it does not work for Google. Check for third-party scripts.\n- **CLS**: Check for images without explicit width/height. Check for dynamically inserted content above the fold. Check for web fonts causing layout shift (FOUT/FOIT).\n\n### Common LCP Fixes\n1. Optimize hero images: WebP/AVIF format, correct sizing, preload with `<link rel=\"preload\">`\n2. Reduce server response time (TTFB < 800ms)\n3. Eliminate render-blocking CSS/JS\n4. Preconnect to critical third-party origins\n\n### Common INP Fixes\n1.
