What MFS is\n\nA retrieval layer that exposes many kinds of content as a unified path\ntree and makes that tree searchable through one hybrid index:\n\n- **One CLI (`mfs`), one mental model.** Local dir, Postgres, GitHub repo,\n Slack workspace, S3 bucket, BigQuery dataset — all addressed as paths\n under their `://` URI. Same verbs everywhere: `ls / tree / cat /\n head / tail / grep / search / export`.\n- **One hybrid index.** Dense vectors (semantic) + BM25 (keyword) fused\n per query — covers conceptual recall and exact-token recall in one call.\n- **POSIX-style locators.** Every search hit carries a `locator` that\n reopens the exact unit: `{\"lines\":[s,e]}` for text/code, a PK dict for\n rows/issues/threads.\n\n## 2. When to use MFS — and when NOT to\n\n| Situation | Use MFS? |\n|---|---|\n| 1000+ files / rows / pages, you don't know where the answer is | ✅ |\n| Cross-source question (\"any past tickets / commits / RFCs about X\") | ✅ `--all` |\n| Concept-style query that won't match literally | ✅ `--mode semantic` |\n| You already know the exact file + roughly where to look | ❌ plain `cat`/`grep` |\n| Exact identifier / error code in 5 files you can list | ❌ plain `grep`/`rg` |\n| Real-time tailing of a live log | ❌ index lags ingest |\n| The source isn't in MFS yet | wrong skill, use `mfs-ingest` to register first |\n\n**Rule:** use the smallest tool that answers the question. Pre-flight — confirm the source is indexed\n\nBefore running any query, especially on cross-source asks:\n\n```bash\nmfs status # server up? any connectors registered?\nmfs connector inspect # this connector's object/job summary\nmfs ls --json # per-entry capabilities + indexable / search_status\n```\n\n- Server unreachable → tell user to start it (`mfs serve start` if\n self-hosted), or this skill can't proceed.\n- `connectors` empty → user hasn't ingested anything yet. **Redirect to\n `mfs-ingest`** — don't try to search nothing.\n- `search_status: unavailable` for the target URI → only `grep` / `ls` /\n `cat` work; offer those or redirect to `mfs-ingest` for a re-sync.\n- `building` → sync in flight; fall back to `mfs grep` (works without an\n index) until done.\n- `partial` → recall incomplete but usable; flag the caveat to the user.\n\n## 4. On small corpora it's still fine, just lighter.\n\nConcrete:\n\n1. **Search:**\n ```bash\n mfs search \"\" --top-k 10\n ```\n2. **Locate** — every hit's envelope carries `locator`:\n - text/code → `{\"lines\":[start,end]}` → `mfs cat --range start:end`\n - structured (row/issue/thread) → PK dict → `mfs cat --locator '{...}'`\n - once-per-object (dir/schema summary, image VLM) → `null` → `mfs cat `\n3. **Browse** — verify only what's needed:\n ```bash\n mfs cat --peek # outline (headings / function signatures)\n mfs cat --skim # peek + one-line summaries per section\n mfs head -n 20 # first records of a structured object\n mfs tree -L 2 # subtree shape\n ```\n\n## 5. Index requirement rules of thumb\n\n- `mfs search` **requires** an index.\n- `mfs grep` works **without** — pushdown → BM25 → linear scan fallback.\n- `mfs ls / tree / cat / head / tail` browse **without** an index.\n\n## 6. Search modes\n\n`mfs search` defaults to `hybrid`. Override only when you know why.\n\n| `--mode` | Mechanic | When |\n|---|---|---|\n| **`hybrid`** *(default)* | dense + BM25 fused with RRF | almost always |\n| `semantic` | dense only | conceptual query, wording won't match literally |\n| `keyword` | BM25 only | exact-term (config key, error code) without semantic drift |\n\nOther useful flags:\n\n- `--top-k N` — default 10; raise to 20-30 on a weak first round.\n- `--all` — search every registered connector. Otherwise scope to a path/URI prefix.\n- `--kind ` — restrict chunk kinds (`row_text`, `thread_aggregate`,\n `body`, `summary`, `vlm_description`, …).\n- `--collapse` — keep only the top-scoring chunk per object; later chunks\n from the same source are dropped, not merged. Recall stays as-is (the\n query still hits the same candidates), but the visible result count can\n fall below `--top-k` — collapse is a post-filter, not a re-rank. If you\n want N distinct objects, raise `--top-k` (e.g. `--top-k 30 --collapse`).\n\n### `--all`: when yes, when no\n\n- ✅ Cross-source recall — \"any past tickets / commits / RFCs / slack about X\".\n- ❌ You know the source — scope to `slack://`; postgres + jira + docs together aren't comparable.\n- ⚠ More than ~5 registered connectors — ASK the user whether to fan out\n widely or scope to the 2-3 likeliest sources first.\n\n## 7. Command cheat sheet\n\n### Search\n\n```bash\nmfs search \"\" # default: hybrid, top-k=10\nmfs search \"\" --all # whole namespace\nmfs search \"\" --top-k 20 # more candidates\nmfs search \"\" --mode semantic # dense-only\nmfs search \"\" --mode keyword # BM25-only\nmfs search \"\" --kind row_text # restrict chunk kinds\nmfs search \"\" --collapse # keep top hit per object (post-filter, may return < top-k)\n```\n\n### Grep\n\n```bash\nmfs grep \"\" # pushdown -> BM25 -> linear\n```\n\n**`mfs grep` is not `grep`.** The three-tier dispatch is:\n\n1. **Pushdown** — for structured connectors (`postgres`, `mongo`,\n `jira`, …) the pattern is shipped to the source as a LIKE / regex\n filter. Literal-exact, token-level; no regex on most structured\n connectors.\n2. **BM25** over indexed objects — for `body`/`code`/`document` chunks\n already in Milvus, the pattern is fed through the same sparse\n index `search --mode keyword` uses. That is a tokenized,\n ranked lookup, **not** a literal substring scan: an analyzer split\n like `getUserId` → `get`, `user`, `id` will rank\n `userId` as a hit; a CJK pattern with no analyzer match returns\n nothing even when the literal bytes are present. If you need\n \"does this exact byte string appear anywhere?\", `mfs export` the\n object and run `rg` locally — `mfs grep` has no \"force linear over\n indexed objects\" flag.\n3. **Linear scan** — only for not-indexed files in scope (file\n connector before `mfs add`). Weak results → recover, don't thrash\n\nIf top hits look off-topic:\n\n1. **Rewrite** with synonyms / domain terms. ASK the user for the domain\n term they'd actually use if vague.
