The live target remains\nuntouched until an independent reviewer accepts its exact candidate bytes.\n\n## Execute now\n\n**Target and inputs: $ARGUMENTS**\n\nUse this workflow when the intended contribution is known but its claims,\nevidence, or synthesis remain unsettled. Route a settled edit to\n`cp-skill-write`. Keep work with no authorized library target in a separate\nordinary workshop and stop; do not initialize this workflow for it.\n\nThe invoking agent is the **parent**. It fixes the commission and authority\nboundary, supplies privileged context, and owns all live mutations. Workers\nchoose investigative, structural, and prose means inside their assigned result\nand evidence boundary.\n\nUse three roles: a fresh source reconstructor, one fresh consolidated author,\nand a fresh independent reviewer. Conditional procedures may add roles only\nwhere they explicitly say so. If the harness cannot provide the required fresh\ncontexts, initialize the run and stop before reconstruction.\n\n## 1. Commission one artifact\n\nResolve one target, mode, collection, type, and acceptance condition. Read the\ntarget collection's `COLLECTION.md` and the applicable type contract in full.\nStop if the collection has no local contract or the target identity is\nambiguous.\n\n- **Edit:** require an existing Markdown target. Frontmatter without `type:` is\n  invalid; no frontmatter means implicit `text`. Save byte-exact `original.md`,\n  its lowercase SHA-256, and one backlinks query before any worker runs. The\n  incumbent is a reconciliation and rollback input, never evidence for itself.\n- **New:** resolve the requested collection and type. Default to `kb/notes/`\n  and `kb/types/note.md`; an instruction goes to `kb/instructions/`. Reject\n  `kb/work/` as a library target. Verify an explicit type path or resolve type\n  shorthand to exactly one type spec. Run a targeted near-duplicate search.\n  Preserve a valid user-supplied path; otherwise use a provisional filename.\n\nA change of identity, mode, collection, or type restarts setup. A retitle,\nreplacement, fold, merge, retirement, or artifact-set change requires explicit\nuser authority; never infer it from a worker recommendation.\n\nThe run parent is exactly `kb/work/multistage/`; the general\n`kb/work/<workshop-name>/` convention does not apply to this workflow. Before\ncreating or writing any run artifact, resolve the proposed repo-relative run\npath and require its direct parent to be `kb/work/multistage/`, its basename to\nmatch `multistage-write-<short-topic>-<YYYYMMDD>`, and its canonical path to\nremain inside that parent. A run directly under `kb/work/`, the grouping\ndirectory itself, or any unresolved or escaping path is a setup blocker.\n\nCreate or resume one valid run at that path. An ambiguous or malformed\nmatching run is a recovery stop, not a reason to create another. Maintain its\nexact nested path in the `kb/work/README.md` entry without overwriting unrelated\nedits.\n\nKeep only durable run state:\n\n- `README.md` — identity, contracts, current stage, blocker, handoffs, hashes,\n  grounding results, checks, and whether the repair allowance was used;\n- `brief.md`, `reconstruction.md`, `claim-disposition.md`, `candidate.md`;\n- immutable `review-01.md` and, if needed, `review-02.md`;\n- `original.md` for edits.\n\nScratch, copied sources, skeletons, and separate planning or acceptance files\nare optional worker means, not workflow state.\n\n## 2. Freeze intent and reconstruct sources\n\nWrite `brief.md` from the user's current direction or named retained intent.\nRecord what workers cannot recover safely: the intended contribution, audience\nand acceptance boundary, mutation authority, binding constraints and external\ncommitments, authorized sources and their roles, exclusions, and choices\nreserved to the user or parent. Label parent proposals as advisory. Do not\nderive the contribution from the incumbent or search raw interaction history.\nStop on conflicting authority or when several materially different central\ncontributions still fit.\n\nAcquire every source needed for the governing question. If an external source\nneeds ingestion or retained quotations, use the grounding interface in section\n4 before treating it as available evidence.\n\nFor an explicit external duplication, subsumption, keep/rewrite/thin,\nmerge/retire, or cohort question, run\n`kb/instructions/assess-a-claim-bearing-artifact-against-external-literature.md`\n(or its installed Commonplace path). That procedure owns source candidacy and\ncomparison. Its explicitly authorized bilateral-isolation workers are the only\nexception to this workflow's three-role topology.\n\nLaunch a fresh source reconstructor. Give it `brief.md`, the authorized\nsource-only paths, and the exact collection/type contracts it needs. Do not\ngive it the target, `original.md`, incumbent-derived material, prior run\ninterpretations, candidates, or reviews. Its result is a source-faithful basis\nfor the commissioned artifact: distinguish support from inference, preserve\nconflicts, scope, uncertainty, and source roles, and expose governing evidence\nor definition gaps. It owns only `reconstruction.md`; its internal organization\nand investigative sequence are its choice.\n\nThe parent verifies that the reconstruction answers the brief from authorized\nsources and then freezes it. A changed governing premise or substantive new\nevidence invalidates this stage and every dependent stage.\n\n## 3. Give one author staged evidence\n\nUse one consolidated author so claim selection and prose remain one coherent\njudgment. Its result is a complete target-compatible candidate whose material\ncommitments are accounted for. It owns only `claim-disposition.md` and\n`candidate.md`; it cannot change the live target, sources, ingests, indexes,\nlineage, siblings, or run control.\n\nFirst give the author only `brief.md`, frozen `reconstruction.md`, exact target\ncontracts, source-only assessment records, and any explicitly bounded\nduplicate or premise search. Exclude the target, `original.md`, incumbent-aware\ncomparisons, prior candidates, and reviews. The author records how every\nmaterial reconstructed commitment is treated, including its basis, scope,\nqualifiers, dependencies, unsupported boundary, and destination. The author\nchooses the disposition format.\n\nAfter the parent verifies and freezes that source-first account, give the same\nauthor `original.md` and any named incumbent-aware assessment, or confirm new\nmode. It reconciles every material incumbent commitment and makes every\nreplacement, omission, fold, retitle, merge, retirement, or artifact-set\neffect explicit. The incumbent supplies no warrant.\n\nThe author then writes exact candidate bytes. It chooses decomposition, order,\nexamples, and wording within the brief, evidence, and target contracts. It\npreserves valid metadata and links unless an authorized change requires\notherwise, removes `user-verified` after substantive change unless a human\nverifies these bytes, and resolves links from the final destination. A new\nmaterial commitment first returns to disposition; a user-owned contribution\nor mutation choice returns to the user with the exact decision and resume\npoint.\n\n## 4. Ground named source dependencies\n\nBefore review, identify each new or materially changed candidate claim that\ndepends on a named external source. For every dependency not already grounded\nby the literature procedure, invoke `cp-skill-ground` with exactly:\n\n```text\nTarget: <exact ingest path or authorized canonical source URL>\nClaim needed: <source-side proposition or question>\n```\n\nDo not pass target prose or target-specific transfer reasoning. Obtain user\nauthority before using an agent-nominated untracked URL. The grounding skill\nalone owns ingest resolution and permitted Quotes mutations.\n\n- For `quotes sufficient` or `quotes added`, verify the ingest's complete\n  Quotes section, apply `semantic/grounding-alignment`, and record the result;\n  retain the appended text for `quotes added`.\n- For `snapshot required`, follow the returned snapshot and gate requirements\n  and retain the exact `(snapshot required)` marker.\n- Any blocker, including a `re-ingest.md` route, stops this run. Do not bypass\n  the result or invoke `cp-skill-ingest` directly.\n\nSubstantive evidence added here returns to reconstruction. Waiting for evidence\nis not completion.\n\n## 5. Review exact bytes and allow one repair\n\nHash `candidate.md`. Launch a fresh reviewer who did not author or revise it.\nGive the reviewer the exact candidate and digest, brief, reconstruction,\ndisposition, edit-only original, target contracts, grounding results, and any\nauthorized literature-assessment records. Exclude the live target, parent\nconversation, scratch, and prior reviews.\n\nThe reviewer decides whether those exact bytes may be promoted. It checks the\ncandidate/incumbent delta against disposition, then intent and omissions,\ncontract fit, evidence and grounding, specificity, relevance, and prose. Each\nblocking finding names its anchor, basis, required byte change, and upstream\nreturn. It writes only immutable `review-01.md` (or `review-02.md` after repair),\nnames the full digest, and ends with a line containing only `accept` or `block`.\nIt edits nothing and chooses no repair.\n\nThe parent verifies the output and recomputes the digest. Missing, malformed,\nor mismatched review is a worker-failure stop. Every run, including a no-change\ncandidate, requires `accept` for unchanged bytes.\n\nOne post-review repair is allowed. Any candidate-byte change after a\nwell-formed review consumes it, including metadata, whitespace, links,\nvalidator repair, or rebase. Return missing evidence to reconstruction,\nmissing authority to the user and disposition, and a supported finding within\nsettled claims to the author. Rerun grounding and use a different fresh\nreviewer. A second `block` or any further required byte change stops with the\nworkshop retained.\n\nWhen new evidence invalidates reconstruction after the author has seen the\nincumbent, rerun reconstruction in a fresh source-only context and repeat both\nreveals with a fresh author. Reconfirming byte-identical candidate content does\nnot spend another repair; any additional byte change does.\n\nInvalidate only what the changed premise affects:\n\n- identity, mode, collection, or type → setup;\n- governing intent or substantive evidence → reconstruction;\n- claim selection or mutation authority → disposition;\n- candidate bytes → fresh review;\n- live-target drift → stop for abandon or authorized rebase; a rebase may\n  return to disposition only while the repair allowance remains, otherwise a\n  new run is required.\n\n## 6. Promote and close\n\nAfter final acceptance, read and execute\n`references/promotion.md` beside this skill. It owns live-drift checks,\nconditional retitle, atomic promotion, rollback, validation, lineage, the\nclosing account, and cleanup. Do not improvise a shorter mutation path.\n\nReport the exact run path, target or blocker, final candidate and review\ndigests, validation, any source mutation, whether repair or recovery ran, and\nwhether the workshop was removed or retained.
