Reading the file tells you what the *author wrote*,\nnot what the build *resolves to*. Ask xmake instead.\n\n## Show project information\n\n```bash\nxmake show                      # project name, version, toolchains, targets ...\nxmake show -t hello             # everything resolved for one target\nxmake show -l targets           # list target names\nxmake show -l toolchains        # what toolchains this xmake knows\nxmake show -l rules             # builtin + project rules\nxmake show -l policies          # policy names and their defaults\nxmake show -l packages          # required packages of this project\nxmake show -l envs              # the environment variables xmake reads\n```\n\n## Machine-readable output\n\nAny `show` output can be emitted as JSON, which is what you want when a script or an agent\nconsumes it:\n\n```bash\nxmake show --format=json                 # whole project as json\nxmake show -t hello --format=json        # one target as json\nxmake show -l targets --format=json\nxmake show --format=json --pretty        # indented, easier to read in a terminal\n```\n\n::: tip\n`--json` still works but is deprecated, use `--format=json`.\n:::\n\nQuery one field without a json parser:\n\n```bash\nxmake show -t hello --format=json | grep -o '\"sourcefiles\":[^]]*]'\n```\n\n## Dependency graphs\n\nThe target dependency graph, as text, JSON, or graphviz DOT:\n\n```bash\nxmake show --info=depgraph                     # human readable tree\nxmake show --info=depgraph --target=app        # only the subtree of one target\nxmake show --info=depgraph --format=json       # for tooling\nxmake show --info=depgraph --format=dot        # graphviz\nxmake show --info=depgraph --format=dot | dot -Tsvg -o deps.svg\n```\n\nThe package dependency graph comes from xrepo:\n\n```bash\nxrepo info --depgraph zlib\n```\n\n## Ask Lua directly\n\nAnything the show plugin does not print is still reachable from a script, and this is the\nmost precise way to answer \"what does the build actually see\":\n\n```bash\n# the sourcefiles a target really compiles, after all rules and options\nxmake l -c 'import(\"core.project.project\"); for _, f in ipairs(project.target(\"hello\"):sourcefiles()) do print(f) end'\n\n# the deps and the packages of a target\nxmake l -c 'import(\"core.project.project\"); print(project.target(\"hello\"):get(\"deps\"))'\n\n# the value of a config/option\nxmake l -c 'import(\"core.project.config\"); config.load(); print(config.get(\"arch\"))'\n```\n\n`xmake l` runs in the project directory and loads it lazily, so `project.target(...)`\nworks without an explicit load.\n\n::: warning\nThe resolved **flags** are the exception: reaching for `compiler.compflags()` from a bare\n`xmake l` prints nothing and warns that the toolchain \"has been not checked yet\", because\nno toolchain check ran in that process.
