GATHER INFO FIRST.**\n\nBad: Something broke → try random fix → doesn't work → try another → still broken after 5 attempts.\n\nGood: Something broke → reproduce it → gather diagnostic info → diagnose root cause → fix it (usually first try).\n\n**Diagnosis before fixes.**\n\n---\n\n## Debugging by tool\n\nHow you debug depends on which tool you're using.\n\n### Claude Code (you have direct access)\n\nClaude Code can gather its own diagnostics. Before asking the founder for screenshots or logs, do this automatically:\n\n```\nAuto-debug steps (do these yourself):\n1. Check git history: git log --oneline -10 and git diff HEAD~3\n2. Search for the error: Grep for error text across the codebase\n3. Read the failing file: Read the file + surrounding context\n4. Run the app/tests: Bash to run dev server, test suite, or reproduce\n5. Check logs: Read server logs, build output, or error logs\n6. Check environment: Verify .env.example vs actual config\n```\n\nOnly ask the founder for information you can't get yourself: what they saw in the browser, what they clicked, screenshots of visual bugs.\n\n### Lovable / Replit (founder pastes into chat)\n\nThe founder needs to gather info manually and paste it. Use the \"Tell AI:\" prompts in [DEBUG-PROMPTS.md](DEBUG-PROMPTS.md) — they're structured templates that ensure complete context.\n\n### Production bugs (check monitoring first)\n\nBefore debugging production issues, check monitoring and error tracking:\n\n```\n1. Error tracker (Sentry, LogRocket): exact error + stack trace + user context\n2. Server logs: filter by timestamp of report\n3. Hosting dashboard: any deployment or outage at that time?\n4. Database: any failed migrations or connection issues?\n```\n\nSee /monitor skill for setting up monitoring. Right-click page → Inspect → Console tab\n2. Look for red errors\n3. Include device and browser.\n\n---\n\n## Common bug types\n\n### \"Nothing happens when I click\"\nCheck: console errors? Network request failing? Element actually clickable (not covered by another element)?\n\n### \"Page won't load\"\nCheck: network errors? JavaScript errors? Infinite redirect? Missing environment variable?\n\n### \"Wrong data showing\"\nCheck: API returning wrong data (network tab)? Caching issue? State not updating? Wrong user context?\n\n### \"Form doesn't submit\"\nCheck: validation errors visible? Console errors? Network request firing at all?\n\n### \"Works in dev, broken in production\"\nCheck: environment variables set? Different database? Build step stripping something? CORS configured for production domain?\n\n### \"Works in Chrome, broken in Safari\"\nCheck: CSS/JS compatibility? Safari-specific defaults? Date parsing differences?\n\n---\n\n## Escalation discipline\n\n### After 1 failed fix\n\nReassess. Did we misdiagnose? Is there more info we should gather?\n\n```\nFix didn't work. Here's what happened after applying it: [new info].\nAre we fixing the right thing?\n```\n\n### After 2 failed fixes\n\n**Stop trying fixes.** The diagnosis is probably wrong.\n\n```\n2 fixes failed.\nFix 1: [tried] → [result]\nFix 2: [tried] → [result]\n\nAre we fixing the wrong thing? Should we rethink the approach entirely?\n```\n\n### After 3 failed fixes\n\nDon't try a 4th. Change strategy:\n1. Rebuild the feature with a simpler approach\n2. Get a human developer to look at it (see /hiring)\n3. Ship a workaround and fix properly later\n\n---\n\n## Digging deeper: find the real root cause\n\nMost debugging failures happen because you stop at the first plausible cause instead of the actual root cause. Use the \"keep asking why\" technique:\n\n```\nProblem: Server crashed\n  Why? → Out of memory\n  Why? → Memory leak in the auth service          ← Most people stop here and \"add more RAM\"\n  Why? → Database connections not being released\n  Why? → Error handler doesn't close connections\n  Why? → No cleanup in the finally block           ← THIS is the fix\n```\n\n**How to tell you've found the real root cause:**\n- It's something you can actually change (code, config, process)\n- Fixing it would prevent the problem from recurring\n- Asking \"why?\" again doesn't lead anywhere actionable\n\n**Common mistake: stopping at \"the AI broke it.\"** That's blame, not a cause. Ask instead: what process would have caught this? Missing test? Missing validation? No code review?\n\n### When a bug has multiple causes\n\nSometimes a bug needs two things to go wrong at the same time. When the obvious cause doesn't fully explain the problem, look for a second branch:\n\n```\nProblem: Deployment failed\n  Why? → Database migration timed out\n    Branch A: Why was the migration slow?\n      → Table lock from a long-running query → Missing index\n    Branch B: Why is the timeout so short?\n      → Using default timeout → No deployment-specific config\n```\n\nBoth branches need fixing, or the bug will come back under slightly different conditions.\n\n### Validate your diagnosis\n\nBefore implementing a fix, trace it backwards: \"If I fix X, does that prevent Y, which prevents Z, which prevents the original problem?\" If the chain breaks, you found the wrong root cause.\n\n---\n\n## Intermittent bugs\n\n\"Works sometimes, breaks sometimes\" — likely a race condition, caching issue, or external API flakiness.\n\n**Tell AI:**\n```\nBug is intermittent.\nWorks: [X] out of 10 times\nFails: [Y] out of 10 times\n\nPattern: Fails more when [condition]. Never fails when [condition].\n\nAdd logging to capture state when it fails.\n```\n\n---\n\n## Edge case testing\n\nWhen a fix works for the main case, also test:\n\n- **Empty states**: no data, empty lists, missing fields\n- **Volume**: 1 item, 100 items, 10,000 items\n- **Timing**: slow connection (3G throttle in DevTools), rapid double-clicks, expired sessions, multiple tabs\n- **Boundaries**: very long text, special characters, zero values, negative numbers\n\n---\n\n## Bugs in production\n\n**Priority 1: Can users work around it?**\n- Yes → fix in next deployment\n- No → emergency fix needed\n\n**Emergency fix:**\n```\nProduction bug blocking users.\nBug: [description]\nImpact: [how many users affected]\n\nNeed the simplest fix that unblocks users. Can improve later.\n```\n\n---\n\n## Multiple bugs at once\n\nSymptoms that look like one bug might be several, or several symptoms might share one root cause.\n\n```\nList all symptoms:\n1. [Symptom]\n2. [Symptom]\n3. [Symptom]\n\nAre these separate bugs or one root cause?\n```\n\n**Fix in priority order:** blocking (can't use app) → critical (main features broken) → major → minor. Don't fix minor bugs while critical ones are unfixed.\n\n---\n\n## Adding debug logging\n\nWhen a bug is hard to diagnose, add strategic logging:\n\n```\nAdd logging at:\n- Function entry with input values\n- Before/after API calls with request/response\n- State changes with before/after values\n- Error handlers with full context\n- Decision points (which branch was taken)\n\nFormat: [TIMESTAMP] [LEVEL] [CONTEXT] Message\nExample: [2025-01-13 10:30:45] [ERROR] [UserAuth] Login failed for user@example.com - Reason: Invalid password - Attempts: 3\n```\n\nRemove or reduce logging after the bug is fixed.\n\n---\n\n## Prevention\n\nAfter every fix, think at three levels:\n\n1. **Immediate fix** — you already did this (the bug is gone)\n2. **Preventive measure** — what stops this from ever happening again? (validation, test, type check)\n3. **Detection mechanism** — if prevention fails, how do you catch it early? (monitoring alert, error tracking)\n\n```\nBug is fixed. Now:\n- What validation or test would prevent this from recurring?\n- What monitoring or alert would catch it early if it does recur? (see /monitor)\n- Is this a pattern? Could the same type of bug exist elsewhere in the codebase?\n```\n\n---\n\n## When to get help\n\n**Consider hiring a developer when:**\n- Stuck after following this entire process\n- Critical production bug you can't figure out\n- Same bug keeps coming back after fixing\n- Bug in a complex third-party integration\n- Security issue or data corruption risk\n\nFor most bugs, this process with AI tools is sufficient.\n\n---\n\n## Common mistakes\n\n| Mistake | Fix |\n|---------|-----|\n| Trying fixes without info | Gather diagnostic info first |\n| \"It doesn't work\" (vague) | Be specific: what exactly doesn't work? |\n| Not reproducing first | Find consistent steps to trigger the bug |\n| Asking AI for random fixes | Diagnose root cause first |\n| Ignoring console/network errors | Always check both tabs |\n| Not testing after fix | Verify fix works AND didn't break other things |\n| Fixing minor bugs while critical ones exist | Prioritize by user impact |\n| Accepting first plausible cause | Keep asking \"why?\" until you reach something you can actually fix |\n| \"The AI broke it\" (blame, not diagnosis) | Ask: what process would have caught this? |\n","tagline":"Use this skill when features break, users report errors, deployments fail, or tests don't pass.
