[Another specific pain]\n\n### Success Criteria\nHow do they measure whether the job is done well?\nWhat would make them say \"this is working\"?\n\n### Objections / Barriers to Adoption\nWhat would prevent them from trying or buying?\n\n### Trigger Events\nWhat circumstances push them to seek a new solution?\n(Team growth, tool sunset, new mandate, frustration peak)\n```\n\n## User Interview Guide\n\n**Before the interview:**\n- Define your learning goal: What decision will this inform?\n- Recruit based on behavior, not demographics.\n- 5-8 interviews per persona segment is usually sufficient.\n\n**Opening (2 min):**\n\"Thanks for joining. I'm trying to understand how people [do X]. There are no right answers — I'm learning from your experience. Can I ask you some questions about how you currently handle [topic]?\"\n\n**Core questions (25 min):**\n\n1. \"Tell me about your role. What does a typical week look like?\"\n2. \"When was the last time you [relevant task]? Walk me through it.\"\n3. \"What tools do you use for this? How did you end up with those?\"\n4. \"What's the most frustrating part of this process?\"\n5. \"If you could wave a magic wand and fix one thing, what would it be?\"\n6. \"Have you tried other solutions? What happened?\"\n7. \"Who else is involved in this process?\"\n8. \"How do you decide when to invest in a new tool for this?\"\n\n**Closing (3 min):**\n\"Is there anything about [topic] I should have asked but didn't?\"\n\"Would you be open to trying an early version and giving feedback?\"\n\n## When You ARE the Persona\n\nIf you're building for your own profession, you have a unique advantage and a unique blind spot.\n\n**The advantage:** You understand the pain deeply. You don't need to \"discover\" the problem — you've lived it.\n\n**The blind spot:** You assume everyone does the job the way you do. They don't. After 20 years, your workflow is optimized. A 3-year practitioner's workflow is different. A solo practitioner's is different from someone at a large firm.\n\n**How to correct for this:**\n- Interview people at different experience levels (junior, mid, senior)\n- Interview people at different organization sizes (solo, small firm, large firm)\n- When they describe their process and it's different from yours, don't correct them. That's data.\n- Ask: \"What tools do you actually use?\" — not \"Would you use a tool that does X?\"\n- The question isn't \"Do I have this pain?\" — it's \"Do enough OTHER people have it, and will they pay?\"\n\n---\n\n## Interview Analysis\n\nAfter interviews, synthesize:\n\n1. **Common patterns:** What did 3+ people say independently?\n2. **Surprising insights:** What contradicted your assumptions?\n3. **Exact quotes:** Capture the user's words, not your interpretation.\n4. **Pain intensity:** Rate each pain point (annoying vs. hair-on-fire).\n5. **Willingness to pay:** Would they pay to solve this? How much?\n\n## Turning Research into Action\n\nResearch is only valuable if it changes decisions:\n\n- **Feature prioritization:** \"Persona A's #1 pain is X, which maps to feature Y.\"\n- **Messaging:** Use their exact words in marketing copy.\n- **Onboarding:** Design the first-run experience around their primary job.\n- **Pricing:** Align tiers with persona segments.\n- **Roadmap:** Sequence features by persona priority.\n\n---\n\n## Capture Your ICP: Create MY-ICP.md\n\nResearch is useful in the moment. `MY-ICP.md` makes it useful forever. This file captures who your customer is so every other skill — landing pages, ads, email, pricing copy — can use their language instead of your marketing language.\n\n### When to create it\n\n- After completing interviews and synthesizing findings\n- After building behavioral personas above\n- Or right now, if you're a domain expert who already knows your customer deeply\n\n### Quick capture for domain experts\n\nIf you ARE your customer (or were recently), you can skip interviews and write this directly. But be honest about your blind spots — the \"When You ARE the Persona\" section above still applies.\n\n> Describe your ideal customer. Be specific about who they are, what frustrates them, what they're trying to accomplish, how they make buying decisions, and what words they actually use when talking about this problem.
