If the user only wants a single\ncity guide or a flight itinerary, this is not the right skill.\n\n## Two entry modes\n\nDetect the mode up front (see `scripts/helper.py` for the heuristic):\n\n- **Light mode (plan it for me):** user gives a start, a rough region or\n  destination, day count, and party/vehicle. → Run the full 7-step workflow,\n  designing the route yourself.\n- **Heavy mode (verify my route):** user pastes/links/screenshots an existing\n  route. → Skip route invention. Parse their route into the schema, then\n  *verify and fill gaps*: driving segmentation, overnight realism, fuel/charge\n  coverage, reservation countdown, seasonal closures, and produce the page.\n\nWhen unsure which mode, ask one short question. Otherwise infer and proceed.\n\n## The five things that make this more than a list\n\nThese are where pure-model answers fail and where this skill earns its keep:\n\n1. **Daily driving segmentation (the core).** Slice the whole route into days\n   under a sane daily drive limit, place an overnight at each segment end, and\n   *validate* each day: drive ≤ limit, arrive before dark, no stop hits a\n   closed gate, fatigue buffer. This is the road-trip equivalent of\n   connection-checking — most AI itineraries skip it.\n2. **Reservation countdown.** Recreation.gov campgrounds often release ~6 months\n   out; popular timed-entry a few days out; in-park lodges up to ~13 months out.\n   From the departure date, work backwards into a \"book by\" to-do list.\n3. **Fuel / charge planning.** Gas: flag long empty stretches (\"next fuel in\n   X mi\"). EV: plan a charging corridor against the vehicle's range and note\n   whether each leg makes it, charger power, and a backup.\n4. **Seasonal road conditions & closures.** Mountain passes that close in winter\n   (Going-to-the-Sun, Tioga Pass, Trail Ridge Rd), wildfire/hurricane/snow\n   season. If the travel date hits one, down-rank or reroute and say so.\n5. **Timezones & borders.** Correct arrival times across timezone lines; for\n   border crossings, flag documents / vehicle papers / insurance / wait times.\n\n## Workflow (7 steps)\n\n> Run `scripts/helper.py \"<user request>\"` first — it parses slots, guesses the\n> entry mode, picks the trip region (for HTML theming), and prints what's still\n> missing. Use its output to drive the steps below.\n\n### Step 1 — Collect requirements (slot filling)\nRequired: **start, travel date, days, party makeup, vehicle (gas/EV/RV + range)**.\nOptional: destination/region, budget, preferences (scenic vs. fast, hike\nintensity, loop vs. one-way, border crossing). Only ask follow-ups for missing\n**required** slots; fill the rest with sensible defaults and proceed.\n\n**Validate place names before planning.** Slot presence is not slot truth: a\nmade-up start like \"ABC\" parses fine and would otherwise flow straight into a\nfabricated route. Run every user-supplied place — start, destination, named\nwaypoints; in heavy mode each day's from/to towns — through\n`python3 tools/places_client.py \"<name>\"` and branch on its verdict:\n`match` → adopt the returned canonical name + coordinates; `did-you-mean` →\nconfirm the intended place with the user (one short question, same spirit as\nthe required-slot follow-ups); `no-match` → **stop and ask — never plan a\nroute around a place you could not verify**; `unverified` (offline) → use your\nown judgment and ask about any name you don't recognize. A `match` with\n`outsideNA: true` is a real place outside US/Canada/Mexico — tell the user\nit's beyond this skill's coverage instead of calling it fake.\n\n### Step 2 — Route / destination planning (if not given)\nDecide **loop vs. one-way** first (affects one-way drop fees and pacing).\nFor region-level input (\"the Southwest\", \"Pacific Northwest\"): search\ncandidates → seasonal & closure check → shortlist. Compute rough total miles /\ndriving days for the shortlist and drop any \"can't be driven in N days\" option.\n\n**Present two candidate routes before committing (light mode only).** Once the\nshortlist is down to viable options, draft **exactly two** genuinely distinct\nroutes yourself — e.g. a faster direct corridor vs. a scenic detour, or two\ndifferent geographic loops — each with a short label, a one-line summary, and\nrough total miles/driving days. Show both to the user and ask them to pick\n(or say \"surprise me\") before moving to Step 3. This is a single short\nquestion, same spirit as the required-slot follow-up in Step 1 — don't\ndraft a full itinerary for either option first. If the conversation is\none-shot and no reply is possible, pick the better-rated option yourself,\nproceed, and note the alternative you didn't take. Skip this entirely in\nheavy mode (the user already supplied a route) or once the user has already\nchosen. Carry both options into `scripts/helper.compare_routes()` to populate\n`routeOptions[]` (Phase-3 module below) so the rendered page shows the\ncomparison table with the chosen route flagged.\n\n### Step 3 — Daily driving segmentation (core; see five-things #1)\n1. Split by a **daily drive limit** (default: relaxed adults ≤ 4–5h;\n   with kids/seniors ≤ 3–4h; user-adjustable).\n2. Put an **overnight** at each segment end (has lodging, supplies, good for the\n   next morning).\n3. Validate: arrive **before dark**, no stop hits a **closed gate**, long legs\n   have a fuel/charge point mid-way.\n4. If infeasible: cut miles / add a night / pick a closer overnight town.\n5. Surface risks explicitly in the day, e.g. \"no fast charger for 180 mi on this\n   leg — charge to full before leaving.\"\n\nRule of thumb: **plan by daylight, not by odometer** — a day that ends after\ndark fails at the trailhead, not on the map.\n\n### Step 4 — Parallel research (sub-agents)\nFan out (one concern per sub-agent, run concurrently): weather (per day),\nlodging/campgrounds (price + booking difficulty), fuel/charging points,\nattractions & tickets/permits, food, scenic byways & hikes, Reddit real-world\ngotchas. **Delegation rule: instruct each sub-agent to hit official APIs first\n(NPS / NWS / Recreation.gov / Open Charge Map) and fall back to web search only\non failure.** See `reference.md` for the tool routing table and `tools/`.\n\n### Step 5 — Reservation countdown (see five-things #2)\nFrom the departure date, generate a \"book by\" to-do list:\ncampgrounds (Recreation.gov, ~T-6 months), timed-entry / wilderness permits\n(per park rule, T-X days), popular in-park lodges (up to ~T-13 months),\none-way car/RV rental (lock price early). Render as a ⚠️ checklist at the top of\nthe page + a timeline. Populate `bookingCountdown[]`.\n\n### Step 6 — Budget (with reliability grading)\nTag every line **verified / reference(~) / estimate(≈)**. Road-trip specifics:\nfuel = total miles ÷ MPG × gas price (or EV charging cost); tolls; park entry or\nthe **America the Beautiful** annual pass; one-way drop fee; campground; lodging;\nfood. Force a bottom disclaimer: prices are dynamic, confirm before departure.\n\n### Step 7 — Generate the single-file HTML (map-first)\n1. Write the data to **`tripData.json`** first (data/view separation — editable,\n   re-renderable).\n2. Render: `python3 assets/generate.py tripData.json -o trip.html`\n   → Leaflet map (numbered stops + ordered polyline) + one-tap mobile nav\n   (Google/Apple deep links) + daily timeline + reservation to-do + budget.\n   Responsive (mobile single-column / desktop multi-column) + print friendly.\n3. **Validate before delivering** (plan §9): the generator already does a light\n   schema check and a JSON parse of the injected data. Optionally syntax-check\n   the inline JS, then open/preview.\n4. Full-page disclaimer: AI-assembled, may be out of date, verify with official\n   sources.\n\n## Output contract\n\n- Always produce **both** `tripData.json` and the rendered `trip.html`.\n- Units: miles, °F, MPG, USD by default; switch to km/°C/local currency on\n  Canadian/Mexican legs and note the change. A trip entirely within China\n  prices its budget in CNY (¥) — never converted into USD.\n- Never invent a precise reservation availability, live charger occupancy, or\n  minute-level traffic — point to the official app / Recreation.gov / nav.\n\n## Honesty boundaries (Phase 1)\n\nDo **not** promise: exact live fuel/electricity prices, live charger occupancy,\nminute-level traffic, live campground availability, or replacing turn-by-turn\nnavigation. For these, tell the user to confirm via the official app /\nRecreation.gov / their navigation app in real time.
