See [SECURITY.md](../SECURITY.md) for details.\n\n## Overview\n\n```\n\n  Makes an authenticated HTTP request to the GitLab API, and prints the response.\n  The endpoint argument should either be a path of a GitLab API v4 endpoint, or\n  `graphql` to access the GitLab GraphQL API.\n\n  - [GitLab REST API documentation](https://docs.gitlab.com/api/)\n  - [GitLab GraphQL documentation](https://docs.gitlab.com/api/graphql/)\n\n  If the current directory is a Git directory, uses the GitLab authenticated host in the current\n  directory. Otherwise, `gitlab.com` will be used.\n  To override the GitLab hostname, use `--hostname`.\n\n  These placeholder values, when used in the endpoint argument, are\n  replaced with values from the repository of the current directory:\n\n  - `:branch`\n  - `:fullpath`\n  - `:group`\n  - `:id`\n  - `:namespace`\n  - `:repo`\n  - `:user`\n  - `:username`\n\n  Methods: the default HTTP request method is `GET`, if no parameters are added,\n  and `POST` otherwise. Override the method with `--method`.\n\n  Pass one or more `--raw-field` values in `key=value` format to add\n  JSON-encoded string parameters to the `POST` body.\n\n  The `--field` flag behaves like `--raw-field` with magic type conversion based\n  on the format of the value:\n\n  - Literal values `true`, `false`, `null`, and integer numbers are converted to\n    appropriate JSON types.\n  - Values beginning with `[` or `{` are parsed as JSON arrays or objects. Invalid\n    JSON and trailing data fail instead of being sent as strings. Leading whitespace\n    before the bracket or brace prevents JSON parsing and remains part of a string.\n  - Placeholder values `:namespace`, `:repo`, and `:branch` are populated with values\n    from the repository of the current directory, including string leaves and keys\n    inside JSON arrays and objects.\n  - If the value starts with `@`, the rest of the value is interpreted as a\n    filename to read the value from. Pass `-` to read from standard input.\n\n  Placeholder substitutions in endpoints and fields are URL-encoded before the\n  request is sent. This matters for project/group paths containing `/` and for\n  automation that previously encoded placeholders manually.\n\n  `--raw-field` always sends strings. A bracketed value such as\n  `-f 'scopes=[api,read_api]'` is the literal string `\"[api,read_api]\"`, not an\n  array; use `-F 'scopes=[\"api\",\"read_api\"]'` for a JSON array. On write methods,\n  glab warns about the old bracketed shorthand without changing the value.\n\n  For GraphQL requests, all fields other than `query` and `operationName` are\n  interpreted as GraphQL variables.\n\n  Use `--form` for multipart/form-data endpoints. Prefix a file value with `@`,\n  or use `@-` once to read a file field from stdin. Do not combine `--form` with\n  `--field`, `--raw-field`, or `--input`; every multipart field must use `--form`.\n\n  Raw request body can be passed from the outside via a file specified by `--input`.\n  Pass `-` to read from standard input. In this mode, parameters specified with\n  `--field` flags are serialized into URL query parameters.\n\n  In `--paginate` mode, all pages of results are requested sequentially until\n  no more pages of results remain. For GraphQL requests:\n\n  - The original query must accept an `$endCursor: String` variable.\n  - The query must fetch the `pageInfo{ hasNextPage, endCursor }` set of fields from a collection.\n\n  The `--output` flag controls the output format:\n\n  - `json` (default): Pretty-printed JSON. Arrays are output as a single JSON array.\n  - `ndjson`: Newline-delimited JSON (also known as JSONL or JSON Lines). Each array element\n    or object is output on a separate line. This format is more memory-efficient for large datasets\n    and works well with tools like `jq`. (json)\n    --paginate      Make additional HTTP requests to fetch all pages of results.\n    -f --raw-field  Add a string parameter.\n    --silent        Do not print the response body.\n```\n\n## Quick start\n\n```bash\nglab api --help\n```\n\n## Automation headers and placeholder encoding\n\n`glab api` forwards Duo workflow/session environment identifiers as GitLab headers when present:\n\n```bash\nDUO_WORKFLOW_WORKFLOW_ID=... glab api projects/:fullpath\nGITLAB_DUO_SESSION_ID=... glab api projects/:fullpath\n```\n\nThese become `X-Gitlab-Duo-Workflow-Id` and `X-Gitlab-Duo-Session-Id` respectively. Do not invent or spoof these values; preserve them only when the surrounding GitLab Duo workflow/session supplied them.\n\nMagic placeholders such as `:fullpath`, `:namespace`, `:repo`, and `:branch` are URL-encoded by `glab` during substitution. Prefer placeholders over manual string interpolation when possible, and avoid double-encoding values that `glab` will substitute.\n\n### Structured values with `--field`\n\nUse `--field` (`-F`) when an endpoint expects an array or object. Invalid JSON, trailing data,\nor object-key collisions created by placeholder expansion are rejected. Use\n`--input` for a complete request body or when a JSON document is easier to\nreview as a file. Use `--raw-field` only for an intentional string.\n\n## Built-in JSON filtering with `--jq`\n\nCommands that print JSON through `IOStreams.PrintJSON` can expose a built-in `--jq` flag. Prefer built-in `--jq` for simple extraction/filtering when the command supports it, because the filtering happens inside `glab` and avoids a separate shell pipe.\n\nRules of thumb:\n- If the command has `--output` or `--output-format`, pass the JSON mode too: `--output=json` or `--output-format=json`. `--jq` fails fast if the output flag is still text.\n- Commands that always emit JSON and have no output-format flag can use `--jq` directly.\n- Use external `jq` when you need non-JSON inputs, newline-delimited JSON processing, streaming over very large outputs, or jq options not available through glab's embedded filter.\n- When a command fails under `--output=json`, glab writes a JSON error object to stdout while retaining the human-readable error on stderr and a nonzero exit status. Check the exit status first; do not mistake a parseable error object for successful data.\n\n```bash\n# Built-in filtering on a structured-output command\nglab ci status --output=json --jq '.pipeline.status'\n\n# Built-in filtering on another structured-output command\nglab repo list --output=json --jq '.[].path_with_namespace'\n\n# External jq is still useful for ndjson/stream-style processing\nglab api issues --paginate --output ndjson | jq 'select(.state == \"opened\")'\n```\n\n## Multipart form requests\n\n### Multipart form requests with `--form`\n\n`glab api` supports multipart/form-data requests via `--form` for endpoints that expect uploaded files or multipart form fields.\n\nUse `--form` only when the target API contract explicitly requires `multipart/form-data`. If the endpoint expects ordinary JSON-style parameters or a raw request body, stay with `--field`, `--raw-field`, or `--input` instead.\n\nDo **not** confuse it with:\n- `--field` / `-F` for inferred-type parameters\n- `--raw-field` / `-f` for string parameters\n- `--input` for supplying a raw request body from a file or stdin\n\nUnlike `--field file=@path`, which reads the file into a text field, `--form file=@path` sends an actual multipart file part. Upload endpoints commonly reject the text-field form with HTTP 400.
