This skill creates the system from scratch, tailored to the project's actual structure.\n\n## Prerequisites\n\n- The project must have an existing codebase (not an empty repo)\n- No `specs/` directory should exist yet (or user confirms overwrite)\n- The agent needs to understand the project's language(s), module system, and directory structure\n\n---\n\n## Procedure\n\n### Step 1 — Confirm scope and location\n\nAsk the user:\n1. Where should the specs live? (default: `specs/` at repository root)\n2. Is there an existing `AGENTS.md` or similar file to add a pointer to specs?\n3. Are there specific areas they want prioritized or skipped?\n\nIf `specs/` already exists, warn the user and ask whether to overwrite or abort.\n\n### Step 2 — Analyze the codebase\n\nPerform a systematic analysis to identify:\n\n**Layers / Modules:**\n- Top-level directories and their responsibilities\n- Import/dependency direction between layers\n- Entry points and initialization flow\n\n**Domains:**\n- Conceptual areas of functionality (NOT mirroring file structure)\n- Key types, interfaces, and data structures per domain\n- Primary flows (happy paths)\n\n**Boundaries:**\n- Where layers interact (interfaces, RPC, events, shared types)\n- Dependency direction rules (who imports whom)\n- Data transformation at boundaries\n\n**Architectural decisions already made:**\n- Technology choices evident from dependencies (DB, frameworks, protocols)\n- Patterns in use (event-driven, layered, hexagonal, etc.)\n- Constraints from the build system or module structure\n\n**Configuration:**\n- Config file format and location\n- Key parameters and their domains\n\nDocument your findings as working notes before proceeding to generation.\n\n### Step 3 — Design the spec structure\n\nBased on analysis, design the directory structure:\n\n```\nspecs/\n├── META.md\n├── INDEX.md\n├── WORKFLOW.md\n│\n├── architecture/\n│   └── (identified system-level concerns)\n│\n├── domains/\n│   ├── <domain-a>/\n│   │   ├── README.md\n│   │   └── <component>.md (if domain has multiple components)\n│   └── <domain-b>.md (if single-file domain)\n│\n├── contracts/\n│   └── <layer-a>-<layer-b>.md (for each identified boundary)\n│\n└── decisions/\n    └── _template.md\n```\n\nPresent the proposed structure to the user for approval before generating files.\n\n### Step 4 — Generate META.md\n\nUse the template from `assets/meta-template.md` as the base. Adapt the \"File Organization\" section to reflect the actual structure designed in Step 3.\n\nMETA.md is the foundational document — all other specs reference it for templates and rules. Generate it first.\n\n### Step 5 — Generate architecture specs\n\nFor each identified system-level concern, create a spec in `architecture/`:\n\nCommon topics (generate only those relevant to the project):\n- **layers.md** — layer hierarchy, import rules, responsibilities\n- **data-flow.md** — request lifecycle, event flow\n- **security-model.md** — auth, authorization, policy enforcement\n\nFollow the Architecture template from META.md. Include:\n- ASCII dependency diagram\n- Import rules as invariants\n- Anti-patterns specific to this project's architecture\n\n### Step 6 — Generate domain specs\n\nFor each identified domain:\n\n**If domain has multiple components** → create a directory:\n- `README.md` (Domain README template) — overview, key files, core types, flow, invariants\n- `<component>.md` (Domain Detail template) — one per significant component\n\n**If domain is simple** → create a single file:\n- `<domain>.md` (Domain README template)\n\n**Content generation rules:**\n- Key Files: verify each path exists before including\n- Core Types: extract actual type definitions from code (code blocks)\n- Flow: trace the actual happy path through code and render as ASCII\n- Invariants: derive from code patterns, tests, and comments (state affirmatively)\n- Configuration: extract from actual config files/structs\n\n### Step 7 — Generate contract specs\n\nFor each identified boundary between layers/modules:\n- One contract file per boundary\n- Include actual interface definitions from code\n- Document initialization (how things are wired at startup)\n- Derive \"Breaking Change Checklist\" from observed coupling\n\n### Step 8 — Generate ADR template and initial ADRs\n\nCreate `decisions/_template.md` from `assets/adr-template.md`.\n\nGenerate ADRs for architectural decisions that are:\n- Non-obvious from the code alone\n- Constraints that future developers/agents must respect\n- Technology choices with rejected alternatives\n\nCommon candidates:\n- Module structure choice (monorepo vs multi-repo, single module vs workspace)\n- Database/storage choice\n- Key framework or library selection\n- Build system or deployment architecture\n\n### Step 9 — Generate INDEX.md\n\nCreate the navigation file with:\n1. **Task → Spec table**: map common development tasks to spec files\n2. **Dependency graph**: ASCII diagram of layer relationships\n3. **Directory listing**: all spec files organized by section\n\n### Step 10 — Generate WORKFLOW.md\n\nUse the template from `assets/workflow-template.md` as the base. Customize:\n- Section 6 \"Workflow for Typical Tasks\" — add project-specific task workflows\n- Examples throughout should reference this project's actual domains and components\n\n### Step 11 — Update AGENTS.md (if exists)\n\nIf the project has an `AGENTS.md` or equivalent agent instructions file, add a pointer:\n\n```markdown\n## Specifications\n\nDetailed system specs live in `specs/`. If unsure about behavior, mark with `<!-- TODO: verify -->` and note it in the summary.\n- **Derive from code, don't invent**: every claim in a spec must be traceable to actual code. Read the source before writing about it.\n- **Respect domain boundaries**: one source file may participate in multiple domains. Assign it to the domain where its primary responsibility lies.\n- **Start lean**: generate only specs for areas with clear, documentable behavior.
