Categorize Tests (#82)\n\n**Rule:** Always categorize tests so unit, integration, and long-running tests can be run independently. Use one or more of these three mechanisms.\n\n### Build tags (file-level)\n\nUse `//go:build` tags to separate integration tests from unit tests.\n\n```go\n// File: db_test.go\n//go:build integration\n\npackage db\n\nfunc TestInsert(t *testing.T) {\n    // ...\n}\n```\n\n- `go test ./...` runs only files without build tags.\n- `go test --tags=integration ./...` includes files tagged `integration`.\n- To run *only* integration tests, add `//go:build !integration` to unit test files.\n\n### Environment variables (test-level)\n\nPrefer this when you want skipped tests to appear explicitly in output.\n\n```go\nfunc TestInsert(t *testing.T) {\n    if os.Getenv(\"INTEGRATION\") != \"true\" {\n        t.Skip(\"skipping integration test\")\n    }\n    // ...\n}\n```\n\n### Short mode (speed-based)\n\nUse `testing.Short()` to skip long-running tests during fast feedback loops.\n\n```go\nfunc TestLongRunning(t *testing.T) {\n    if testing.Short() {\n        t.Skip(\"skipping long-running test\")\n    }\n    // ...\n}\n```\n\nRun with `go test -short ./...`.\n\n**Combine approaches:** Use build tags or env vars for test *kind* (unit vs integration) and short mode for test *speed*.\n\n---\n\n## 2. Enable the -race Flag (#83)\n\n**Rule:** Always run `go test -race ./...` in local development and CI. The race detector finds real data races at runtime with zero false positives.\n\n**Overhead:** Memory 5-10x, execution 2-20x. Do not enable in production binaries (canary releases excepted).\n\n**Key points:**\n- The race detector can produce false negatives. Loop concurrent test logic to increase detection probability:\n\n```go\nfunc TestDataRace(t *testing.T) {\n    for i := 0; i < 100; i++ {\n        // concurrent logic under test\n    }\n}\n```\n\n- To exclude a file from race detection, use `//go:build !race`.\n\n---\n\n## 3. Use Test Execution Modes (#84)\n\n### Parallel execution\n\nMark independent tests with `t.Parallel()` to speed up long-running test suites.\n\n```go\nfunc TestA(t *testing.T) {\n    t.Parallel()\n    // ...\n}\n```\n\n- Sequential tests run first; parallel tests are paused then resumed together.\n- Default max parallel = `GOMAXPROCS`. Override with `go test -parallel 16 ./...`.\n\n### Shuffle mode\n\nUse `-shuffle=on` to detect hidden inter-test dependencies.\n\n```sh\ngo test -shuffle=on -v ./...\n```\n\n- Reproduce a specific order with the seed: `go test -shuffle=1636399552801504000 -v ./...`\n- The seed is printed in verbose output.\n\n---\n\n## 4. Use Table-Driven Tests (#85)\n\n**Rule:** When multiple tests share the same structure (call, compare, report), use table-driven tests with subtests.\n\n```go\nfunc TestRemoveNewLineSuffix(t *testing.T) {\n    tests := map[string]struct {\n        input    string\n        expected string\n    }{\n        \"empty\":                  {input: \"\", expected: \"\"},\n        \"ending with \\\\r\\\\n\":     {input: \"a\\r\\n\", expected: \"a\"},\n        \"ending with \\\\n\":        {input: \"a\\n\", expected: \"a\"},\n        \"ending with multiple\":   {input: \"a\\n\\n\\n\", expected: \"a\"},\n        \"no newline\":             {input: \"a\", expected: \"a\"},\n    }\n\n    for name, tt := range tests {\n        t.Run(name, func(t *testing.T) {\n            got := removeNewLineSuffixes(tt.input)\n            if got != tt.expected {\n                t.Errorf(\"got: %s, expected: %s\", got, tt.expected)\n            }\n        })\n    }\n}\n```\n\n**Parallel subtests:** When combining table-driven tests with `t.Parallel()`, shadow the loop variable to avoid closure capture bugs:\n\n```go\nfor name, tt := range tests {\n    tt := tt // shadow to capture current value\n    t.Run(name, func(t *testing.T) {\n        t.Parallel()\n        // use tt safely\n    })\n}\n```\n\n> Note: Go 1.22+ fixes the loop variable capture issue, but shadowing remains safe for backward compatibility.\n\n---\n\n## 5. Never Sleep in Unit Tests (#86)\n\n**Rule:** Never use `time.Sleep` as a synchronization mechanism in tests. It causes flakiness.\n\n### Option A: Retry with polling (acceptable)\n\n```go\nfunc assertEventually(t *testing.T, assertion func() bool, maxRetries int, waitTime time.Duration) {\n    t.Helper()\n    for i := 0; i < maxRetries; i++ {\n        if assertion() {\n            return\n        }\n        time.Sleep(waitTime)\n    }\n    t.Fatal(\"assertion never became true\")\n}\n```\n\nUse short intervals with many retries instead of a single long sleep. Libraries like testify provide `Eventually`.\n\n### Option B: Channel synchronization (preferred)\n\n```go\ntype publisherMock struct {\n    ch chan []Foo\n}\n\nfunc (p *publisherMock) Publish(got []Foo) {\n    p.ch <- got\n}\n\nfunc TestGetBestFoo(t *testing.T) {\n    mock := publisherMock{ch: make(chan []Foo)}\n    defer close(mock.ch)\n    h := Handler{publisher: &mock, n: 2}\n\n    foo := h.getBestFoo(42)\n    // check foo ...\n\n    select {\n    case published := <-mock.ch:\n        if len(published) != 2 {\n            t.Fatalf(\"expected 2, got %d\", len(published))\n        }\n    case <-time.After(time.Second):\n        t.Fatal(\"timed out waiting for publish\")\n    }\n}\n```\n\n**Prefer synchronization over retries.** If synchronization is impossible, reconsider the design.\n\n---\n\n## 6. Handle the time API Deterministically (#87)\n\n**Rule:** Do not call `time.Now()` directly inside code under test. Inject the time dependency so tests are deterministic.\n\n### Option A: Inject a `now` function dependency\n\n```go\ntype now func() time.Time\n\ntype Cache struct {\n    mu     sync.RWMutex\n    events []Event\n    now    now\n}\n\nfunc NewCache() *Cache {\n    return &Cache{now: time.Now}\n}\n```\n\nIn tests, inject a fixed time:\n\n```go\ncache := &Cache{now: func() time.Time {\n    return parseTime(t, \"2020-01-01T12:00:00.06Z\")\n}}\n```\n\n### Option B: Accept time as a parameter (simpler, more limited)\n\n```go\nfunc (c *Cache) TrimOlderThan(t time.Time) {\n    // no internal time.Now() call\n}\n```\n\nCaller computes the time; test passes a deterministic value.\n\n**Do not** use a global `var now = time.Now` -- it prevents parallel test execution due to shared mutable state.\n\n---\n\n## 7. Use Testing Utility Packages (#88)\n\n### httptest\n\n**For testing HTTP handlers** -- avoid real HTTP transport:\n\n```go\nfunc TestHandler(t *testing.T) {\n    req := httptest.NewRequest(http.MethodGet, \"http://localhost\", strings.NewReader(\"foo\"))\n    w := httptest.NewRecorder()\n    Handler(w, req)\n\n    if got := w.Result().Header.Get(\"X-API-VERSION\"); got != \"1.0\" {\n        t.Errorf(\"expected 1.0, got %s\", got)\n    }\n    body, _ := io.ReadAll(w.Result().Body)\n    if string(body) != \"hello foo\" {\n        t.Errorf(\"unexpected body: %s\", body)\n    }\n}\n```\n\n**For testing HTTP clients** -- use `httptest.NewServer` to spin up a local server with a stub handler, then pass `srv.URL` to the client under test. Call `defer srv.Close()`. Also available: `httptest.NewTLSServer`, `httptest.NewUnstartedServer`.\n\n### iotest\n\n**Test custom `io.Reader` correctness** with `iotest.TestReader(reader, expected)`.\n\n**Test resilience to I/O errors** using wrappers:\n\n| Function | Behavior |\n|---|---|\n| `iotest.ErrReader(err)` | Always returns the given error |\n| `iotest.HalfReader(r)` | Reads half as many bytes as requested |\n| `iotest.OneByteReader(r)` | Reads one byte at a time |\n| `iotest.TimeoutReader(r)` | Fails on second read, then recovers |\n| `iotest.TruncateWriter(w, n)` | Silently stops after n bytes |\n\nWrap readers/writers with these to verify error tolerance.\n\n---\n\n## 8. Write Accurate Benchmarks (#89)\n\n### Reset or pause the timer for setup\n\n```go\n// One-time setup: reset before the loop\nfunc BenchmarkFoo(b *testing.B) {\n    expensiveSetup()\n    b.ResetTimer()\n    for i := 0; i < b.N; i++ {\n        functionUnderTest()\n    }\n}\n\n// Per-iteration setup: stop/start around it\nfunc BenchmarkBar(b *testing.B) {\n    for i := 0; i < b.N; i++ {\n        b.StopTimer()\n        data := expensiveSetup()\n        b.StartTimer()\n        functionUnderTest(data)\n    }\n}\n```\n\n**Caveat:** If the function under test is very fast relative to setup, the benchmark may take excessively long. Decrease `-benchtime` to mitigate.\n\n### Do not trust single micro-benchmark runs\n\n- Micro-benchmarks are affected by machine activity, thermal scaling, cache alignment, and instruction ordering.\n- Use `-count=10` and `benchstat` for statistical comparison:\n\n```sh\ngo test -bench=. -count=10 | tee stats.txt\nbenchstat stats.txt\n```\n\n- Use tools like `perflock` to limit CPU contention from background processes.\n\n### Prevent compiler optimizations from eliminating your benchmark\n\nThe compiler may inline and then dead-code-eliminate calls with no observable side effects.\n\n```go\n// BAD: compiler may optimize away the call entirely\nfunc BenchmarkPopcnt(b *testing.B) {\n    for i := 0; i < b.N; i++ {\n        popcnt(uint64(i))\n    }\n}\n\n// GOOD: assign to local, then to global to prevent elimination\nvar globalResult uint64\n\nfunc BenchmarkPopcnt(b *testing.B) {\n    var v uint64\n    for i := 0; i < b.N; i++ {\n        v = popcnt(uint64(i))\n    }\n    globalResult = v\n}\n```\n\n**Pattern:** (1) assign result to a local variable each iteration, (2) assign final value to a package-level global after the loop. Do not write directly to a global each iteration (heap writes are slower).\n\n### Beware the observer effect\n\nReusing the same data across benchmark iterations lets CPU caches warm up, skewing results for CPU-bound functions.\n\n```go\n// BAD: matrix cached in L1 after first iterations\nfunc BenchmarkCalcSum(b *testing.B) {\n    s := createMatrix(rows)\n    b.ResetTimer()\n    for i := 0; i < b.N; i++ {\n        calculateSum(s)\n    }\n}\n\n// GOOD: fresh data each iteration prevents cache bias\nfunc BenchmarkCalcSum(b *testing.B) {\n    for i := 0; i < b.N; i++ {\n        b.StopTimer()\n        s := createMatrix(rows)\n        b.StartTimer()\n        calculateSum(s)\n    }\n}\n```\n\n---\n\n## 9. Leverage All Go Testing Features (#90)\n\n### Code coverage\n\n```sh\ngo test -coverprofile=coverage.out ./...\ngo tool cover -html=coverage.out\n```\n\nTo include cross-package coverage (e.g., `foo.go` tested by `bar_test.go`):\n\n```sh\ngo test -coverpkg=./... -coverprofile=coverage.out ./...\n```\n\nDo not chase 100% coverage mechanically -- reason about what your tests actually cover.\n\n### Test from an external package\n\nUse `package foo_test` to enforce black-box testing that only exercises the public API. This prevents tests from depending on unexported internals.\n\n### Utility functions with *testing.T\n\nPass `*testing.T` to test helpers and call `t.Fatal` on error instead of returning errors. Mark helpers with `t.Helper()` so failure locations point to the caller.\n\n```go\nfunc createCustomer(t *testing.T, name string) Customer {\n    t.Helper()\n    c, err := newCustomer(name)\n    if err != nil {\n        t.Fatal(err)\n    }\n    return c\n}\n```\n\n### Setup and teardown\n\n**Per test:** Call setup directly, teardown via `defer` or `t.Cleanup`.\n\n```go\nfunc TestMySQL(t *testing.T) {\n    db := createConnection(t, dsn)\n    // t.Cleanup registered inside createConnection closes db\n    // ...\n}\n\nfunc createConnection(t *testing.T, dsn string) *sql.DB {\n    t.Helper()\n    db, err := sql.Open(\"mysql\", dsn)\n    if err != nil {\n        t.FailNow()\n    }\n    t.Cleanup(func() { _ = db.Close() }","tagline":"Guides the agent to avoid common Go testing mistakes when writing or reviewing test code.
