Runes, bytes, and `len`\n\n- A Go `string` is an immutable sequence of **bytes**, not runes.\n- `len(s)` returns the **byte count**, not the character/rune count.\n- A `rune` is an alias for `int32` and represents a single Unicode code point.\n- Under UTF-8 a code point may occupy 1-4 bytes.\n- To count runes, use `utf8.RuneCountInString(s)`.\n\n```go\ns := \"cafe\\u0301\" // \"cafe\" + combining accent = 5 runes, but check byte length\nfmt.Println(len(s))                    // byte count (likely 6)\nfmt.Println(utf8.RuneCountInString(s)) // rune count (5)\n```\n\n## 2. String iteration\n\n### Prefer the range value variable for rune access\n\nWhen ranging over a string, the index `i` is the **byte offset** of the rune, and the value `r` is the **rune itself**. Accessing `s[i]` gives a single byte, not the rune.\n\n**Wrong:**\n\n```go\nfor i := range s {\n    fmt.Printf(\"%c\", s[i]) // prints individual bytes, corrupts multi-byte runes\n}\n```\n\n**Correct — iterate over runes:**\n\n```go\nfor i, r := range s {\n    fmt.Printf(\"position %d: %c\\n\", i, r) // i = byte offset, r = full rune\n}\n```\n\n### Accessing the i-th rune\n\nIf you need the rune at a logical index (not byte offset), convert to `[]rune` first:\n\n```go\nr := []rune(s)[4]\n```\n\nThis allocates a new slice (O(n)), so avoid it in hot loops. If the string is known to\nbe pure ASCII, `rune(s[i])` is safe and allocation-free.\n\n## 3. Trim functions — `TrimRight`/`TrimLeft` vs. `TrimSuffix`/`TrimPrefix`\n\nThese are commonly confused. The semantics are fundamentally different:\n\n| Function | Behaviour |\n|---|---|\n| `strings.TrimRight(s, cutset)` | Removes **all trailing runes** that appear anywhere in `cutset`, one by one, until a rune not in the set is found. |\n| `strings.TrimSuffix(s, suffix)` | Removes the exact trailing `suffix` substring **once**. |\n| `strings.TrimLeft(s, cutset)` | Same as TrimRight but from the left. |\n| `strings.TrimPrefix(s, prefix)` | Same as TrimSuffix but from the left. |\n| `strings.Trim(s, cutset)` | Applies both `TrimLeft` and `TrimRight`. |\n\n```go\nstrings.TrimRight(\"123oxo\", \"xo\")   // \"123\"   (strips o, x, o individually)\nstrings.TrimSuffix(\"123oxo\", \"xo\")  // \"123o\"  (strips the suffix \"xo\" once)\n```\n\n**Rule:** When you want to remove a known fixed string from the start/end, use\n`TrimPrefix` / `TrimSuffix`. When you want to strip a *set of characters*, use\n`TrimLeft` / `TrimRight` / `Trim`.\n\n## 4. String concatenation\n\n### Avoid `+=` in loops\n\nStrings are immutable. Every `+=` allocates a new string and copies all previous\nbytes. This is O(n^2) for n concatenations.\n\n**Wrong:**\n\n```go\nfunc concat(values []string) string {\n    s := \"\"\n    for _, v := range values {\n        s += v // new allocation every iteration\n    }\n    return s\n}\n```\n\n### Use `strings.Builder` in loops\n\n```go\nfunc concat(values []string) string {\n    var sb strings.Builder\n    for _, v := range values {\n        sb.WriteString(v)\n    }\n    return sb.String()\n}\n```\n\n### Pre-grow the builder when total size is known or estimable\n\nComputing the total byte length first and calling `Grow` avoids internal slice\nre-allocations. Benchmarks show ~78% speedup over a non-pre-allocated Builder.\n\n```go\nfunc concat(values []string) string {\n    total := 0\n    for _, v := range values {\n        total += len(v)\n    }\n    var sb strings.Builder\n    sb.Grow(total)\n    for _, v := range values {\n        sb.WriteString(v)\n    }\n    return sb.String()\n}\n```\n\n### When `+=` is fine\n\nFor a small, fixed number of concatenations (roughly <= 5) or one-off formatting,\n`+=`, `fmt.Sprintf`, or `+` are acceptable and more readable.\n\n### Safety note\n\n`strings.Builder` is **not** safe for concurrent use.\n\n## 5. Avoid useless `string` <-> `[]byte` conversions\n\nEach conversion between `string` and `[]byte` allocates and copies because strings\nare immutable.\n\n**Rule:** If input arrives as `[]byte` (from `io.Reader`, `io.ReadAll`, etc.) and the\nresult is also `[]byte`, keep the entire pipeline in `[]byte`. The `bytes` package\nmirrors almost every function in `strings`:\n\n| `strings` function | `bytes` equivalent |\n|---|---|\n| `strings.TrimSpace` | `bytes.TrimSpace` |\n| `strings.Split` | `bytes.Split` |\n| `strings.Contains` | `bytes.Contains` |\n| `strings.Index` | `bytes.Index` |\n| `strings.Count` | `bytes.Count` |\n\n**Wrong — double conversion:**\n\n```go\nfunc getBytes(reader io.Reader) ([]byte, error) {\n    b, err := io.ReadAll(reader)\n    if err != nil {\n        return nil, err\n    }\n    return []byte(strings.TrimSpace(string(b))), nil // 2 extra allocs\n}\n```\n\n**Correct — stay in `[]byte`:**\n\n```go\nfunc getBytes(reader io.Reader) ([]byte, error) {\n    b, err := io.ReadAll(reader)\n    if err != nil {\n        return nil, err\n    }\n    return bytes.TrimSpace(b), nil // zero extra allocs\n}\n```\n\n**Guideline:** Before reaching for the `strings` package, check whether the whole\nworkflow can use `bytes` instead.\n\n## 6. Substrings and memory leaks\n\nSubstring expressions like `s[a:b]` produce a string that **shares the same backing\narray** as the original. If the original string is large (e.g., a log line of thousands\nof bytes) and you store only a small substring, the entire original backing array\nstays in memory and cannot be garbage-collected.\n\n**Leaky:**\n\n```go\nuuid := log[:36]  // uuid's backing array still holds the full log string\ns.store(uuid)\n```\n\n### Fix: copy the substring\n\n**Go >= 1.18 — use `strings.Clone`:**\n\n```go\nuuid := strings.Clone(log[:36]) // fresh 36-byte allocation\n```\n\n**Pre-1.18 — manual deep copy:**\n\n```go\nuuid := string([]byte(log[:36])) // forces a new backing array\n```\n\nNote: some linters flag `string([]byte(...))` as a \"redundant conversion\" — this\nwarning is incorrect in this context because the round-trip deliberately breaks\nbacking-array sharing.\n\n### Substring indexing caveat\n\n`s[a:b]` operates on **byte** indices, not rune indices. For multi-byte runes,\nconvert to `[]rune` first:\n\n```go\ns := \"Hêllo, World!\"\nsub := string([]rune(s)[:5]) // \"Hêllo\" — rune-safe\n```\n\n## Quick-reference checklist\n\n- [ ] `len(s)` used only when byte count is intended; `utf8.RuneCountInString` for rune count.\n- [ ] String range loops use the value variable (`r`), not `s[i]`, for rune access.\n- [ ] `TrimRight`/`TrimLeft` not confused with `TrimSuffix`/`TrimPrefix`.\n- [ ] No `+=` concatenation inside loops; `strings.Builder` with `Grow` preferred.\n- [ ] No unnecessary `string` <-> `[]byte` round-trips; `bytes` package used when possible.\n- [ ] Substrings of large strings copied via `strings.Clone` (or `string([]byte(...))`) before long-term storage.\n","tagline":"Guides the agent to write correct and efficient Go string code.
