Time Duration (#75)\n\n**Rule:** Never pass a bare integer to functions accepting `time.Duration`. Always use the `time` API constants.\n\n`time.Duration` is nanoseconds as `int64`. Passing `1000` means 1000 nanoseconds (1 microsecond), not 1 second.\n\n```go\n// BAD: 1000 nanoseconds, not 1 second\nticker := time.NewTicker(1000)\n\n// GOOD: explicit duration units\nticker := time.NewTicker(time.Second)\nticker := time.NewTicker(1000 * time.Millisecond)\n```\n\nThis applies to all functions/methods accepting `time.Duration`: `time.NewTicker`, `time.NewTimer`, `time.Sleep`, `time.After`, `context.WithTimeout`, etc.\n\n---\n\n## 2. time.After Memory Leaks (#76)\n\n**Rule:** Never use `time.After` inside a loop or any repeatedly-called function (HTTP handler, Kafka consumer, etc.). Use `time.NewTimer` with `Reset` instead.\n\nEach `time.After` call allocates ~200 bytes that cannot be freed until the timer expires. In a hot loop, this causes unbounded memory growth.\n\n```go\n// BAD: leaks memory -- each iteration allocates a timer that lives for 1 hour\nfunc consumer(ch <-chan Event) {\n    for {\n        select {\n        case event := <-ch:\n            handle(event)\n        case <-time.After(time.Hour):\n            log.Println(\"warning: no messages received\")\n        }\n    }\n}\n\n// GOOD: reuse a single timer\nfunc consumer(ch <-chan Event) {\n    timerDuration := time.Hour\n    timer := time.NewTimer(timerDuration)\n    defer timer.Stop()\n    for {\n        timer.Reset(timerDuration)\n        select {\n        case event := <-ch:\n            handle(event)\n        case <-timer.C:\n            log.Println(\"warning: no messages received\")\n        }\n    }\n}\n```\n\n`time.After` is fine for one-shot use outside loops.\n\n---\n\n## 3. JSON Handling (#77)\n\n### 3.1 Type Embedding Hijacks Marshaling\n\n**Rule:** If an embedded type implements `json.Marshaler` or `json.Unmarshaler`, the parent struct silently inherits that behavior, overriding the default field-by-field marshaling.\n\n`time.Time` implements `json.Marshaler`. Embedding it causes the entire struct to marshal as just the time value, dropping all other fields.\n\n```go\n// BAD: marshals as \"2021-05-18T21:15:08Z\" -- ID is silently lost\ntype Event struct {\n    ID int\n    time.Time\n}\n\n// GOOD: use a named field\ntype Event struct {\n    ID   int\n    Time time.Time\n}\n```\n\n**When reviewing:** flag any embedded type that implements `json.Marshaler`/`json.Unmarshaler` (e.g., `time.Time`, `encoding.TextMarshaler` implementors). Prefer named fields unless the embedding is intentional and a custom `MarshalJSON` is defined on the parent.\n\n### 3.2 Monotonic Clock Breaks Equality\n\n**Rule:** `time.Now()` includes a monotonic clock reading. JSON marshal/unmarshal strips it. Comparing the original and unmarshaled structs with `==` returns `false`.\n\n```go\nt := time.Now()\nevent1 := Event{Time: t}\nb, _ := json.Marshal(event1)\nvar event2 Event\n_ = json.Unmarshal(b, &event2)\n\nevent1 == event2 // false -- monotonic component differs\n```\n\n**Fixes:**\n\n- Compare time fields with `time.Time.Equal()` (ignores monotonic component).\n- Strip monotonic before storing: `t.Truncate(0)` or `t.Round(0)`.\n- For tests, use `t.UTC().Truncate(0)` to normalize both timezone and monotonic.\n\n### 3.3 Map of any: Numerics Are float64\n\n**Rule:** When unmarshaling JSON into `map[string]any`, all numeric values become `float64` -- even integers. Incorrect type assertions (e.g., to `int`) cause panics.\n\n```go\nvar m map[string]any\njson.Unmarshal([]byte(`{\"id\": 32}`), &m)\n// m[\"id\"] is float64(32), NOT int\n\n// BAD: panics at runtime\nid := m[\"id\"].(int)\n\n// GOOD: assert to float64, then convert\nid := int(m[\"id\"].(float64))\n```\n\nPrefer unmarshaling into a concrete struct when the schema is known.\n\n---\n\n## 4. SQL Mistakes (#78)\n\n### 4.1 sql.Open Does Not Connect\n\n**Rule:** `sql.Open` may only validate arguments without establishing a connection. Always follow it with `db.Ping()` or `db.PingContext()` to verify the database is reachable.\n\n```go\ndb, err := sql.Open(\"mysql\", dsn)\nif err != nil {\n    return err\n}\nif err := db.PingContext(ctx); err != nil {\n    return err\n}\n```\n\n### 4.2 Connection Pool Configuration\n\n**Rule:** `*sql.DB` is a connection pool, not a single connection. For production, always configure these parameters:\n\n| Method | Default | Guidance |\n|---|---|---|\n| `SetMaxOpenConns` | Unlimited | **Must set.** Match what the DB can handle. |\n| `SetMaxIdleConns` | 2 | Increase for high-concurrency workloads to avoid frequent reconnects. |\n| `SetConnMaxIdleTime` | Unlimited | Set to release connections after traffic bursts. |\n| `SetConnMaxLifetime` | Unlimited | Set when connecting through a load balancer. |\n\n```go\ndb.SetMaxOpenConns(25)\ndb.SetMaxIdleConns(25)\ndb.SetConnMaxIdleTime(5 * time.Minute)\ndb.SetConnMaxLifetime(1 * time.Hour)\n```\n\n### 4.3 Use Prepared Statements\n\n**Rule:** Use `db.Prepare` / `db.PrepareContext` for repeated queries and any query built from untrusted input (SQL injection defense).\n\n```go\nstmt, err := db.PrepareContext(ctx, \"SELECT * FROM orders WHERE id = ?\")\nif err != nil {\n    return err\n}\ndefer stmt.Close()\n\nrows, err := stmt.QueryContext(ctx, id)\n```\n\n### 4.4 Null Values\n\n**Rule:** Scanning a SQL `NULL` into a non-pointer Go type fails at runtime. Use a pointer or `sql.NullXXX` type for nullable columns.\n\n```go\n// Option A: pointer\nvar department *string\nerr := rows.Scan(&department, &age) // department is nil if NULL\n\n// Option B: sql.NullString (preferred -- clearer intent)\nvar department sql.NullString\nerr := rows.Scan(&department, &age)\nif department.Valid {\n    fmt.Println(department.String)\n}\n```\n\nAvailable null types: `sql.NullString`, `sql.NullBool`, `sql.NullInt32`, `sql.NullInt64`, `sql.NullFloat64`, `sql.NullTime`.\n\n### 4.5 Check rows.Err After Iteration\n\n**Rule:** `rows.Next()` can return `false` either because all rows were consumed OR because an error occurred preparing the next row. Always check `rows.Err()` after the loop.\n\n```go\nfor rows.Next() {\n    if err := rows.Scan(&department, &age); err != nil {\n        return err\n    }\n}\nif err := rows.Err(); err != nil {\n    return err\n}\n```\n\n---\n\n## 5. Closing Transient Resources (#79)\n\n**Rule:** Any struct implementing `io.Closer` must be closed. Use `defer` immediately after the creation/error-check.\n\n### 5.1 HTTP Response Body\n\n- Always close `resp.Body` when `err == nil`, even if you don't read it.\n- Closing without reading may prevent TCP connection reuse. To preserve keep-alive, drain the body first.\n\n```go\nresp, err := client.Get(url)\nif err != nil {\n    return err\n}\ndefer resp.Body.Close()\n\n// If you don't need the body but want keep-alive:\n_, _ = io.Copy(io.Discard, resp.Body)\n```\n\n**Note:** On the server side, the request body is closed automatically. No action needed.\n\n### 5.2 sql.Rows\n\nForgetting to close `sql.Rows` leaks a database connection back to the pool.\n\n```go\nrows, err := db.QueryContext(ctx, query)\nif err != nil {\n    return err\n}\ndefer rows.Close()\n```\n\n### 5.3 os.File\n\nNot closing `os.File` delays release until GC. For writable files, the close error may surface a buffered write failure -- propagate it.\n\n```go\n// Read-only: log close errors\nf, err := os.Open(filename)\nif err != nil {\n    return err\n}\ndefer func() {\n    if err := f.Close(); err != nil {\n        log.Printf(\"failed to close file: %v\", err)\n    }\n}()\n\n// Writable: propagate close errors via named return\nfunc writeToFile(filename string, content []byte) (err error) {\n    f, err := os.Create(filename)\n    if err != nil {\n        return err\n    }\n    defer func() {\n        closeErr := f.Close()\n        if err == nil {\n            err = closeErr\n        }\n    }()\n    _, err = f.Write(content)\n    return\n}\n```\n\nIf durability matters, call `f.Sync()` before close. Then close errors can be safely ignored.\n\n---\n\n## 6. Return After HTTP Error Reply (#80)\n\n**Rule:** `http.Error` does NOT stop handler execution. Always `return` immediately after it.\n\n```go\n// BAD: execution continues after error reply\nfunc handler(w http.ResponseWriter, req *http.Request) {\n    err := foo(req)\n    if err != nil {\n        http.Error(w, \"foo\", http.StatusInternalServerError)\n    }\n    // This runs even on error -- may panic on nil pointer, or write duplicate response\n    result := bar(req)\n    w.Write(result)\n}\n\n// GOOD: return after error reply\nfunc handler(w http.ResponseWriter, req *http.Request) {\n    err := foo(req)\n    if err != nil {\n        http.Error(w, \"foo\", http.StatusInternalServerError)\n        return\n    }\n    result := bar(req)\n    w.Write(result)\n}\n```\n\nThis applies to any function that writes an HTTP error: `http.Error`, `w.WriteHeader`, `json.NewEncoder(w).Encode`, etc. Missing return causes duplicate writes and a superfluous `WriteHeader` warning.\n\n---\n\n## 7. Default HTTP Client and Server (#81)\n\n### 7.1 HTTP Client\n\n**Rule:** Never use `http.DefaultClient`, `http.Get()`, `http.Post()`, or `&http.Client{}` in production. They have no timeouts -- requests can hang forever.\n\n```go\n// GOOD: production HTTP client\nclient := &http.Client{\n    Timeout: 5 * time.Second,\n    Transport: &http.Transport{\n        DialContext: (&net.Dialer{\n            Timeout: time.Second,\n        }).DialContext,\n        TLSHandshakeTimeout:   time.Second,\n        ResponseHeaderTimeout:  time.Second,\n        MaxIdleConnsPerHost:    100,\n        IdleConnTimeout:        90 * time.Second,\n    },\n}\n```\n\n**Key timeouts:**\n\n| Timeout | Covers |\n|---|---|\n| `net.Dialer.Timeout` | TCP dial |\n| `Transport.TLSHandshakeTimeout` | TLS handshake |\n| `Transport.ResponseHeaderTimeout` | Waiting for response headers |\n| `Client.Timeout` | Entire request (dial through body read) |\n\n**Connection pooling:** Default `MaxIdleConnsPerHost` is 2. For high-throughput to a single host, increase it to avoid constant reconnection overhead.\n\n### 7.2 HTTP Server\n\n**Rule:** Never use `&http.Server{}`, `http.ListenAndServe()`, or `http.Serve()` without timeouts in production. Clients can exploit missing timeouts to exhaust resources.\n\n```go\n// GOOD: production HTTP server\nsrv := &http.Server{\n    Addr:              \":8080\",\n    ReadHeaderTimeout: 500 * time.Millisecond,\n    ReadTimeout:       time.Second,\n    IdleTimeout:       time.Second,\n    Handler:           http.TimeoutHandler(handler, 5*time.Second, \"request timeout\"),\n}\n```\n\n**Key timeouts:**\n\n| Timeout | Covers |\n|---|---|\n| `ReadHeaderTimeout` | Reading request headers. **Must set** to prevent Slowloris attacks. |\n| `ReadTimeout` | Reading entire request (headers + body). |\n| `http.TimeoutHandler` | Handler execution time. Returns 503 on timeout and cancels the handler's context. |\n| `IdleTimeout` | Keep-alive idle time.
