Variable shadowing\n\nA variable declared with `:=` in an inner block shadows the outer variable of the same name. The outer variable remains unchanged, which is almost always a bug.\n\n**Wrong:**\n\n```go\nvar client *http.Client\nif tracing {\n    client, err := createClientWithTracing() // shadows outer client\n    if err != nil {\n        return err\n    }\n    log.Println(client)\n} else {\n    client, err := createDefaultClient() // shadows outer client\n    if err != nil {\n        return err\n    }\n    log.Println(client)\n}\n// client is still nil here\n```\n\n**Fix — pre-declare `err`, use `=` instead of `:=`:**\n\n```go\nvar client *http.Client\nvar err error\nif tracing {\n    client, err = createClientWithTracing()\n} else {\n    client, err = createDefaultClient()\n}\nif err != nil {\n    return err\n}\n```\n\nAlternative: assign `:=` to a temporary variable (`c`), then `client = c` after the error check.\n\n**Detection:** Run `go vet -vettool=$(which shadow)` (install with `golang.org/x/tools/go/analysis/passes/shadow/cmd/shadow`).\n\n## 2. Unnecessary nesting\n\nKeep the happy path left-aligned. Reduce nesting by returning early on errors and flipping conditions.\n\n**Rules:**\n- When an `if` block returns, omit the `else`.\n- If the non-happy path is in the `else`, flip the condition.\n- Aim for a maximum of two indent levels inside a function body.\n\n**Wrong:**\n\n```go\nif s != \"\" {\n    // ... long happy path\n} else {\n    return errors.New(\"empty string\")\n}\n```\n\n**Correct:**\n\n```go\nif s == \"\" {\n    return errors.New(\"empty string\")\n}\n// ... happy path at top level\n```\n\nApply this recursively: replace every `if ... { return } else { ... }` chain with guard clauses that return early, keeping the happy path at the lowest indent level.\n\n## 3. init functions\n\n**Avoid `init` when:**\n- The initialization can fail — `init` cannot return errors, so the only signal is `log.Fatal`/`panic`, removing the caller's ability to retry or fall back.\n- It sets global mutable state — makes testing harder and any function in the package can alter the global.\n- The side effect is not needed by every test in the file.\n\n**Acceptable uses of `init`:**\n- Registering static, infallible configuration (e.g., `http.HandleFunc` with non-nil handlers).\n- Side-effect imports (`_ \"image/png\"`) for codec registration.\n\n**Wrong — DB connection in init:**\n\n```go\nvar db *sql.DB\n\nfunc init() {\n    d, err := sql.Open(\"mysql\", os.Getenv(\"DSN\"))\n    if err != nil {\n        log.Panic(err) // caller can't handle this\n    }\n    db = d\n}\n```\n\n**Correct — explicit constructor:**\n\n```go\nfunc NewDB(dsn string) (*sql.DB, error) {\n    db, err := sql.Open(\"mysql\", dsn)\n    if err != nil {\n        return nil, err\n    }\n    if err = db.Ping(); err != nil {\n        return nil, err\n    }\n    return db, nil\n}\n```\n\n## 4. Getters and setters\n\nGo does not require getters and setters. Do not add them unless they provide value (validation, computed values, mutex wrapping, debugging interception, or forward compatibility).\n\n**Naming convention when used:**\n- Getter: `Balance()` (not `GetBalance()`)\n- Setter: `SetBalance(v int)`\n\n```go\ncurrentBalance := customer.Balance()\nif currentBalance < 0 {\n    customer.SetBalance(0)\n}\n```\n\nThe standard library exposes struct fields directly when appropriate (e.g., `time.Timer.C`). Follow the same pragmatism.\n\n## 5. Interface pollution\n\n**Core principle:** Abstractions should be discovered, not created. Do not define an interface until you have a concrete need.\n\n**Valid reasons to create an interface:**\n1. **Common behavior** — multiple types share the same method set (e.g., `sort.Interface`).\n2. **Decoupling** — swap implementations for testing or Liskov substitution.\n3. **Restricting behavior** — expose only a subset of a type's methods (e.g., read-only config getter from a read-write config struct).\n\n**Do not** create interfaces preemptively \"in case we need them later.\" If it is unclear how an interface improves the code, remove it.\n\n**Keep interfaces small.** \"The bigger the interface, the weaker the abstraction.\" (Rob Pike)\n\n## 6. Interface on the consumer side\n\nInterfaces should live in the package that **uses** them, not in the package that **implements** them.\n\n- The producer exports the concrete struct.\n- Each consumer defines only the interface it needs (possibly a single-method interface), keeping it unexported.\n\n**Wrong — producer-side interface:**\n\n```go\n// package store\ntype CustomerStorage interface {  // forces all consumers into this abstraction\n    StoreCustomer(Customer) error\n    GetCustomer(id string) (Customer, error)\n    // ... 4 more methods\n}\n```\n\n**Correct — consumer-side interface:**\n\n```go\n// package client\ntype customersGetter interface {          // unexported, minimal\n    GetAllCustomers() ([]store.Customer, error)\n}\n```\n\n**Exception:** An interface on the producer side is acceptable when you **know** (not foresee) it will be used by many consumers (e.g., `encoding.BinaryMarshaler`). Keep it as small as possible.\n\n## 7. Returning interfaces\n\nFunctions should return concrete types, not interfaces. Returning an interface:\n- Creates a dependency from the implementation package to the client package.\n- Forces every consumer into the same abstraction level.\n\n**Guideline (Postel's law applied to Go):**\n- Accept interfaces.\n- Return structs.\n\n**Exceptions:** The `error` interface (ubiquitous), and up-front abstractions proven to be universally useful (e.g., `io.LimitReader` returns `io.Reader`).\n\n## 8. `any` says nothing\n\n`any` (`interface{}`) discards all type information. Avoid it unless you genuinely need to accept every possible type.\n\n**Wrong:**\n\n```go\nfunc (s *Store) Get(id string) (any, error) { ... }\nfunc (s *Store) Set(id string, v any) error { ... }\n```\n\n**Correct — explicit per-type methods:**\n\n```go\nfunc (s *Store) GetContract(id string) (Contract, error) { ... }\nfunc (s *Store) SetContract(id string, c Contract) error  { ... }\nfunc (s *Store) GetCustomer(id string) (Customer, error)  { ... }\nfunc (s *Store) SetCustomer(id string, c Customer) error  { ... }\n```\n\n**Legitimate uses of `any`:** `json.Marshal(v any)`, `fmt.Println(a ...any)`, `db.QueryContext(ctx, query, args ...any)` — where any possible type is truly expected.\n\n## 9. Generics\n\n### When to use\n\n- **Data structures** — binary trees, linked lists, heaps parameterized by element type.\n- **Functions on slices/maps/channels of any type** — e.g., `merge[T any](ch1, ch2 <-chan T) <-chan T`.\n- **Factoring out behaviors** — e.g., a generic `SliceFn[T]` that implements `sort.Interface`.\n\n### When NOT to use\n\n- **Calling a method of the type argument** — if the body calls `w.Write(b)`, just accept `io.Writer` directly.\n- **When it makes code harder to read** — generics are never mandatory. If the generic version is not clearly simpler, keep the concrete version.\n\n**Rule of thumb:** Do not use type parameters preemptively. Wait until you are about to write boilerplate code to consider generics.\n\n### Constraints\n\n- Use `comparable` for map keys or equality checks.\n- Use `~int | ~string` (union with `~`) to allow custom types whose underlying type matches.\n- Type parameters work on functions and type receivers, **not** on individual methods:\n\n```go\n// Compile error:\nfunc (Foo) bar[T any](t T) {} // methods cannot have type parameters\n\n// OK — use a type-parameterized receiver:\ntype Foo[T any] struct{ val T }\nfunc (f Foo[T]) Bar() T { return f.val }\n```\n\n## 10. Type embedding\n\nEmbedding promotes all fields and methods of the inner type. Use it only when promotion is desirable.\n\n**Do NOT embed when:**\n- It only saves typing (`Foo.Baz()` vs. `Foo.Bar.Baz()`) with no semantic benefit.\n- It promotes fields or methods that should be private (e.g., `sync.Mutex` — clients should not call `Lock`/`Unlock`).\n\n**Wrong — mutex embedded:**\n\n```go\ntype InMem struct {\n    sync.Mutex           // Lock/Unlock are now public\n    m map[string]int\n}\n// m := inmem.New(); m.Lock() — exposed to external callers\n```\n\n**Correct — mutex as a named field:**\n\n```go\ntype InMem struct {\n    mu sync.Mutex        // unexported, invisible to clients\n    m  map[string]int\n}\n```\n\n**Good use of embedding — forwarding methods intentionally:**\n\n```go\ntype Logger struct {\n    io.WriteCloser       // promotes Write and Close deliberately\n}\n```\n\n**Remember:** Embedding is composition, not inheritance. The embedded type remains the method receiver.\n\n## 11. Functional options pattern\n\nUse this pattern when a constructor has optional configuration. It is the idiomatic Go approach and avoids the downsides of config structs (zero-value ambiguity) and builder patterns (empty struct boilerplate).\n\n```go\ntype options struct {\n    port    *int\n    timeout time.Duration\n}\n\ntype Option func(*options) error\n\nfunc WithPort(port int) Option {\n    return func(o *options) error {\n        if port < 0 {\n            return errors.New(\"port should be positive\")\n        }\n        o.port = &port\n        return nil\n    }\n}\n\nfunc WithTimeout(t time.Duration) Option {\n    return func(o *options) error {\n        o.timeout = t\n        return nil\n    }\n}\n\nfunc NewServer(addr string, opts ...Option) (*http.Server, error) {\n    var o options\n    for _, opt := range opts {\n        if err := opt(&o); err != nil {\n            return nil, err\n        }\n    }\n    // use o.port, o.timeout with defaults ...\n}\n```\n\n**Caller usage:**\n\n```go\nsrv, err := httplib.NewServer(\"localhost\",\n    httplib.WithPort(8080),\n    httplib.WithTimeout(time.Second),\n)\n// Default config — no extra args needed:\nsrv, err := httplib.NewServer(\"localhost\")\n```\n\n**Conventions:**\n- Option functions start with `With` prefix.\n- The options struct is unexported.\n- Validation happens inside each `With*` function, not deferred to `Build`.\n\n## 12. Project structure\n\nThere is no official Go project structure standard. When choosing a layout:\n- `/cmd` — main entry points (`/cmd/foo/main.go`).\n- `/internal` — private packages that cannot be imported externally.\n- `/pkg` — public library code (optional; some teams skip this).\n- `/test` — integration and public API tests.\n- No `/src` directory.\n\n**Package organization rules:**\n- Avoid premature packaging. Start simple, split when boundaries become clear.\n- Avoid nano packages (1-2 files with no cohesion) and monolith packages.\n- Name packages after what they **provide**, not what they **contain**.\n- Package names: short, single lowercase word, concise.\n- Minimize exports. When unsure, keep it unexported; export later if needed.\n- Organize by context (domain) or by layer (hexagonal), but be **consistent**.\n\n## 13. No utility packages\n\nDo not create packages named `utils`, `common`, `shared`, or `base`. These names carry no meaning about what the package provides.\n\n**Wrong:**\n\n```go\npackage util\n\nfunc NewStringSet(...string) map[string]struct{} { ... }\nfunc SortStringSet(map[string]struct{}) []string { ... }\n```\n\n```go\nset := util.NewStringSet(\"c\", \"a\", \"b\")\nfmt.Println(util.SortStringSet(set))\n```\n\n**Correct — name after what it provides:**\n\n```go\npackage stringset\n\ntype Set map[string]struct{}\nfunc New(...string) Set { ... }\nfunc (s Set) Sort() []string { ... }\n```\n\n```go\nset := stringset.New(\"c\", \"a\", \"b\")\nfmt.Println(set.Sort())\n```\n\nIf common types are shared between a client and server package, consider merging them into one package rather than creating a `common` package.\n\n## 14.
