Use when preparing a release to avoid rejections and catch issues before submitting.\n---\n\n# Google Play Submission Checks\n\nUse this skill to validate everything before submitting a release to Google Play, reducing rejections and failed edits.\n\n## Preconditions\n- Auth configured (`gplay auth login` or `GPLAY_SERVICE_ACCOUNT` env var).\n- Package name known (`--package` or `GPLAY_PACKAGE`).\n- AAB/APK built and signed.\n- Service account has at least \"Release Manager\" permission.\n\n## Prefer the First-Class Commands\n\nThe CLI has canonical, purpose-built commands. Reach for these before\nhand-scripting individual validators:\n\n- **`gplay validate --package <pkg>`** — the canonical release-readiness report.\n  Combines local artifact/metadata/screenshot/release-note checks with remote\n  track and listing state and Console-only follow-up items. Use `--bundle`,\n  `--listings-dir`, `--screenshots-dir`, `--track`, and `--strict` (treat\n  warnings as failures) to scope it.\n\n  ```bash\n  gplay validate \\\n    --package com.example.app \\\n    --bundle app-release.aab \\\n    --track production \\\n    --strict\n  ```\n\n- **`gplay preflight --file <app.aab>`** — offline AAB/APK compliance and\n  hygiene. Fully decodes `AndroidManifest.xml` (binary AXML for APKs, aapt2\n  protobuf for App Bundles) and runs nine scanners: `manifest`, `permissions`,\n  `native_libs`, `metadata`, `secrets`, `billing`, `privacy`, `policy`, `size`.\n  No API calls and no credentials. Validate Bundle Integrity\n\n```bash\ngplay validate bundle --file app-release.aab\n```\n\nChecks:\n- File exists and is readable\n- File has `.aab` extension\n- Valid ZIP archive structure\n- Contains required bundle components (manifest, resources, dex)\n\nIf using APK instead:\n```bash\ngplay validate bundle --file app-release.apk\n```\n\n### 2. Validate Store Listing Metadata\n\n```bash\ngplay validate listing --dir ./metadata\n```\n\nChecks:\n- **Title**: max 30 characters\n- **Short description**: max 80 characters\n- **Full description**: max 4000 characters\n- Required fields present\n- Valid UTF-8 encoding\n\nValidate a specific locale:\n```bash\ngplay validate listing --dir ./metadata --locale en-US\n```\n\nFor JSON format metadata:\n```bash\ngplay validate listing --dir ./metadata --format json\n```\n\n### 3. Validate Screenshots\n\n```bash\ngplay validate screenshots --dir ./metadata\n```\n\nChecks:\n- Minimum 2 screenshots per device type\n- Maximum 8 screenshots per device type\n- Valid image formats (PNG, JPEG)\n- Files are readable\n\nValidate for a specific locale:\n```bash\ngplay validate screenshots --dir ./metadata --locale en-US\n```\n\n### 4. Verify Existing Listings on Play Store\n\nCompare local metadata against what is live:\n```bash\ngplay sync diff-listings \\\n  --package com.example.app \\\n  --dir ./metadata\n```\n\nCheck all configured locales:\n```bash\nEDIT_ID=$(gplay edits create --package com.example.app | jq -r '.id')\ngplay listings list --package com.example.app --edit $EDIT_ID --output table\n```\n\n### 5. Data Safety Declaration\n\nEnsure the data safety form is complete. Missing or inaccurate data safety declarations are a common rejection reason.\n\n```bash\ngplay data-safety update \\\n  --package com.example.app \\\n  --json @data-safety.json\n```\n\n### 6. Version Code Check\n\nThe version code must be strictly higher than all previous releases on every track. Check current track status:\n\n```bash\ngplay tracks list --package com.example.app --output table\n```\n\nGet details for a specific track:\n```bash\nEDIT_ID=$(gplay edits create --package com.example.app | jq -r '.id')\ngplay tracks get --package com.example.app --edit $EDIT_ID --track production --output table\n```\n\n### 7. Deobfuscation / Mapping File\n\nUpload ProGuard/R8 mapping files so crash reports in Play Console are readable.\nThis command is **edit-scoped** (needs `--edit`) and the version flag is\n`--apk-version`, not `--version-code`:\n\n```bash\nEDIT_ID=$(gplay edits create --package com.example.app | jq -r '.id')\ngplay deobfuscation upload \\\n  --package com.example.app \\\n  --edit $EDIT_ID \\\n  --apk-version 42 \\\n  --file mapping.txt\ngplay edits commit --package com.example.app --edit $EDIT_ID\n```\n\nWithout mapping files, crash stack traces in Android Vitals will be obfuscated and unusable.\n\n### 8. Dry Run the Release\n\nThe safest pre-submission check. Performs the full release pipeline without committing:\n\n```bash\ngplay release \\\n  --package com.example.app \\\n  --track production \\\n  --bundle app-release.aab \\\n  --release-notes @release-notes.json \\\n  --dry-run\n```\n\nThis will:\n- Create an edit\n- Upload the bundle\n- Configure the track\n- **Validate** the edit (catches API-level errors)\n- Discard the edit without committing\n\nIf the dry run succeeds, the real release will succeed.\n\n### 9. Edit Validation (Manual Sequence)\n\nWhen using the manual edit workflow, always validate before committing:\n\n```bash\nEDIT_ID=$(gplay edits create --package com.example.app | jq -r '.id')\n\n# ... upload bundle, update tracks, etc. ...\n\n# Validate the edit (catches all server-side issues)\ngplay edits validate --package com.example.app --edit $EDIT_ID\n\n# Only commit if validation passes\ngplay edits commit --package com.example.app --edit $EDIT_ID\n```\n\n## Content Policy Compliance\n\n### Target API Level\n\nGoogle Play requires apps to target a recent Android API level, and raises the\nfloor roughly every August to \"latest release minus one\". Both new apps and\nupdates are affected; builds below the floor are rejected at upload.\n\nCheck the build without guessing at the current number:\n\n```bash\n# The policy scanner reports targetSdkVersion against Play's floor\ngplay preflight --file app-release.aab --only policy\n\n# Override the floor if Google's annual bump landed before a gplay release\ngplay preflight --file app-release.aab --only policy --min-target-sdk 36\n```\n\nFix it in `build.gradle` / `build.gradle.kts`:\n\n```\nandroid {\n    defaultConfig {\n        targetSdk = 35  // set to Play's current floor or higher\n    }\n}\n```\n\nDo not tell the user a specific required API level from memory — read it from\nthe `policy` scanner output or from Play's published requirement.\n\n### Permissions Declarations\nSensitive permissions require justification in the Play Console:\n- `ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION` / `ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION`\n- `READ_CONTACTS`, `READ_CALL_LOG`, `READ_SMS`\n- `CAMERA`, `RECORD_AUDIO`\n- `REQUEST_INSTALL_PACKAGES`\n- `QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES`\n\nRemove any permissions your app does not actually need. Unused sensitive permissions are a top rejection reason.\n\n### Data Safety Form\nAll apps must have a complete data safety section. Common data types to declare:\n- Personal info (name, email, phone)\n- Location (approximate, precise)\n- Financial info (purchase history)\n- App activity (in-app search, other user-generated content)\n- Device identifiers (advertising ID)\n\n### App Content Ratings\nEnsure your content rating questionnaire is completed in Play Console. Missing ratings block distribution.\n\n## Screenshot Requirements by Device Type\n\n| Device Type | Image Type | Min | Max | Min Resolution |\n|-------------|-----------|-----|-----|----------------|\n| Phone | `phoneScreenshots` | 2 | 8 | 320px (min side) |\n| 7-inch Tablet | `sevenInchScreenshots` | 0 | 8 | 320px (min side) |\n| 10-inch Tablet | `tenInchScreenshots` | 0 | 8 | 320px (min side) |\n| Android TV | `tvScreenshots` | 0 | 8 | 1280x720 |\n| Wear OS | `wearScreenshots` | 0 | 8 | 320px (min side) |\n\nAdditional image assets:\n| Asset | Type | Required |\n|-------|------|----------|\n| Feature Graphic | `featureGraphic` | Yes (for featuring) |\n| Promo Graphic | `promoGraphic` | No |\n| Icon | `icon` | Set via Play Console |\n| TV Banner | `tvBanner` | Required for TV apps |\n\n## Common Rejection Reasons and Fixes\n\n### 1. \"Version code already exists\"\n**Cause**: The version code in your bundle matches an existing release.\n**Fix**: Increment `versionCode` in `build.gradle` and rebuild.\n\n### 2. \"APK/Bundle targets an SDK below the required level\"\n**Cause**: `targetSdkVersion` is too low.\n**Fix**: Update `targetSdkVersion` to 34 or higher and rebuild.\n\n### 3. \"Data safety form incomplete\"\n**Cause**: The data safety declaration is missing or incomplete.\n**Fix**: Complete the data safety form in Play Console or update via CLI:\n```bash\ngplay data-safety update --package com.example.app --json @data-safety.json\n```\n\n### 4. \"Screenshots missing for required device type\"\n**Cause**: Phone screenshots are required for all apps.\n**Fix**: Add at least 2 phone screenshots:\n```bash\nEDIT_ID=$(gplay edits create --package com.example.app | jq -r '.id')\ngplay images upload \\\n  --package com.example.app \\\n  --edit $EDIT_ID \\\n  --locale en-US \\\n  --type phoneScreenshots \\\n  --file screenshot1.png\n```\n\n### 5. \"Release notes missing for default locale\"\n**Cause**: No \"What's New\" text for the default language.\n**Fix**: Include release notes in the release command:\n```bash\ngplay release \\\n  --package com.example.app \\\n  --track production \\\n  --bundle app.aab \\\n  --release-notes '{\"en-US\": \"Bug fixes and improvements\"}'\n```\n\n### 6. \"Signing key mismatch\"\n**Cause**: The bundle is signed with a different key than what Play Console expects.\n**Fix**: Use the same upload key configured in Play App Signing. Check your keystore configuration.\n\n### 7. \"Deobfuscation file too large\"\n**Cause**: Mapping file exceeds 300 MB limit.\n**Fix**: Strip unused mappings or compress the file.\n\n## Pre-launch Report\n\nGoogle Play runs automated tests on your app before review (pre-launch report). Common issues surfaced:\n- **Crashes on launch**: App crashes on one or more test devices\n- **Security vulnerabilities**: Known CVEs in dependencies\n- **Accessibility issues**: Missing content descriptions, small touch targets\n- **Performance warnings**: Slow startup, excessive wake locks\n\nCheck pre-launch reports in Play Console after uploading to any track.
