Keep the deterministic\ngame reducer independent from Cloudflare transport so rules and concurrency can\nbe tested without Wrangler.\n\n## Establish authority\n\nBefore editing, identify:\n\n- the room's deterministic Durable Object ID;\n- the public room code and any private invite credential;\n- how a device resumes and which seats it owns;\n- the persisted room revision and action identity; and\n- how clients recover after an unknown result.\n\nThe URL room code is the room selector, not authentication. Store resume\ncredentials per room, exchange private invites for device credentials, and\nremove invite secrets from the visible URL after exchange. Re-authorize the\ndevice against current room state on every mutation.\n\nRead [protocol-and-architecture.md](references/protocol-and-architecture.md)\nwhen changing URLs, identity, message schemas, persistence, or recovery.\n\n## Serialize mutations\n\nDurable Objects serialize events, but handlers can interleave at external\n`await` boundaries. For every authoritative action:\n\n1. enter one room mutation gate;\n2. re-read state and re-authorize the device inside it;\n3. check immutable `actionId` duplication before checking `expectedRevision`;\n4. validate the fresh revision and deterministic game rule;\n5. persist the accepted state before acknowledgement or broadcast; and\n6. return the canonical snapshot for acceptance, duplication, or rejection.\n\nA duplicate action returns the prior accepted result without applying side\neffects again. A stale or illegal action returns its `actionId`, reason, and\ncanonical snapshot. The client proposes an action; it never submits trusted\nscores, turn order, or board outcomes.\n\n## Keep acknowledgement and recovery explicit\n\nCorrelate every syntactically valid mutation with its `actionId`. Apply snapshots\nmonotonically by revision. Keep a rejected local draft available for repair.\nAfter an acknowledgement timeout, treat the result as unknown: reconnect, load\nthe canonical snapshot, and retry only with the same action identity when the\nprotocol permits it.\n\nOne in-flight action per client is the simple default. More optimistic behavior\nrequires an explicit conflict and rebase design.\n\n## Durable Object and WebSocket boundaries\n\n- Use the Hibernation WebSocket API for idle server connections when appropriate.\n- Store only stable identifiers in WebSocket attachments; persistent room state\n  belongs in Durable Object storage.\n- Derive presence from live sockets rather than treating it as game authority.\n- Version and normalize stored room state, then validate cross-field invariants.\n- Put alarm-driven bot or timeout transitions through the same mutation path.\n- Bound message sizes, text, activity rate, and retained action IDs.\n- Parse explicit inbound and outbound protocol allowlists.\n- Hash long-lived device credentials and return room/join/resume responses with\n  `Cache-Control: no-store`.\n\nExercise the actual Worker entrypoint and Durable Object binding; a frontend-only\ndevelopment server is not a multiplayer test.\n\n## Verify the failure cases that matter\n\nAt minimum, cover wrong-room credential isolation, private-invite exchange,\ninvalid resume recovery, same-revision concurrent actions, duplicate delivery,\ndisconnect/resume, and two isolated browsers completing turns with identical\nroom state.
