This skill enforces an\nopinionated workflow: scope the change, generate failure-mode hypotheses\nthat cover the categories the literature says matter most, pick\ntechniques from a curated catalog, and emit a structured plan file that\nthe executing-distributed-system-tests skill (or a human) can run.\n\n## Plan modes\n\nThis skill produces two shapes of plan. Decide which one applies before\nyou start; the steps below branch on it.\n\n- **Change-scoped** — the default. Use when the caller names a commit,\n  PR, branch-diff, or feature. The plan covers what *this change* could\n  regress, scoped by its blast radius.\n- **Project-wide** — use when the caller asks for a \"release-validation\n  plan\", \"stability plan for the whole system\", \"test plan to enough\n  coverage\", \"what should we be testing\", or otherwise frames the\n  request without a specific change. The plan covers what *the system*\n  should be tested for, with an explicit inventory of existing tests\n  and a gap analysis driving the new-scenario list.\n\nIf the framing is ambiguous, ask once before starting — the modes\ndiverge enough that retrofitting one into the other wastes work.\n\n## Process\n\nFollow these steps in order. Do not skip; the order matters because\nlater steps depend on artifacts the earlier steps produce.\n\n### 1. Scope the system\n\nRead the project's entry points: `README`, `AGENTS.md` or `CLAUDE.md`,\ntop-level `docs/`, any existing test-plan or runbook files. Note:\n- Tenancy / isolation model\n- Persistence model (what is durable, fsync contract)\n- Replication / consensus protocol, quorum, leadership\n- Ordering guarantee exposed to clients\n- Network boundaries (which RPCs / streams)\n- Retry / idempotency contract\n- Observability (logs, metrics, traces) available to an oracle\n\nWrite this as a one-paragraph SUT model. If anything is ambiguous from\nthe repo, ask the user before proceeding — do not invent guarantees.\n\n### 1b. Extract claims and guarantees\n\nA good test plan exists to falsify what the product *claims*. Before\ngenerating hypotheses, write down what the SUT promises its users.\nThis is the spine the rest of the plan hangs off — every hypothesis,\nevery scenario, every oracle should be traceable back to a claim it\neither confirms or refutes.\n\nSources to mine:\n- README \"guarantees\" / \"what we offer\" sections\n- API docs / reference manuals\n- ARCHITECTURE / DESIGN docs (claims about consistency, durability,\n  replication, fault tolerance)\n- Public blog posts, talks, marketing material (if any)\n- The code itself: function names, doc-comments on public APIs,\n  error types (`IdempotencyConflict`, `StaleRead`, etc.) imply\n  guarantees the system claims to enforce\n- Existing test names (a test called `linearizable_under_partition`\n  implies a linearizability claim under partition)\n\nCategorise each claim:\n- **Safety** — \"the system never returns a stale read\", \"no\n  acknowledged write is ever lost\", \"linearizable per key\"\n- **Liveness** — \"every accepted operation eventually commits\",\n  \"leader election completes within N seconds of crash\"\n- **Durability** — \"fsync'd writes survive crash\", \"replicated\n  writes survive single-AZ loss\"\n- **Performance / SLO** — \"p99 append latency ≤ X ms at Y ops/s\n  per session\"\n- **Operational** — \"rolling upgrade is non-disruptive\",\n  \"configuration changes are atomic\"\n- **Idempotency / dedup** — \"same idempotency key never produces\n  two committed effects\"\n- **Isolation** — \"tenant A's reads never observe tenant B's writes\",\n  \"no read returns data from a transaction that has not yet\n  committed\"\n- **Ordering** — \"consumers always see messages in the order the\n  producer sent them\", \"every reader sees a prefix of the global\n  log order\"\n- **Membership** — \"a node that fails its liveness probe is removed\n  from the cluster membership view within N seconds\", \"every joined\n  member appears in the membership table exactly once\"\n- **Boundary** — access-boundary semantics: \"tenant A's data is never\n  reachable from tenant B on any surface\", \"a request scoped to\n  namespace X never routes to namespace Y\". Subsumes tenancy / authz\n  / namespace / routing / multi-protocol; do not file those as\n  separate categories. Triggers the §7.M.S surface-decomposition\n  discipline (see step 3 and `references/boundary-and-isolation-testing.md`).\n- **Fairness** — per-group performance and noisy-neighbor isolation:\n  \"no tenant can starve another for throughput\", \"one shard's load\n  does not blow another shard's p99\". Group can be tenant, shard,\n  queue, partition, region, priority class, user, table, or workload\n  class. Also triggers §7.M.S.\n\nIf the project does NOT explicitly document a claim that appears\nin the code, write it as an *inferred* claim and mark it as such —\ninferred claims are still testable, and surfacing them often\ncatches places where the docs lie or are silent about real\nguarantees the implementation depends on.\n\nWhen done, you should have a numbered claims list (C1, C2, …). The\nhypothesis-generation step (step 3) will reference these by number,\nthe coverage matrix (template §5) tracks claim × hypothesis, and\nscenarios (template §7) state which claim(s) each is trying to\nfalsify. If a hypothesis cannot\nbe tied back to a claim, either name the missing claim explicitly\nor drop the hypothesis — untethered hypotheses produce ceremonial\nscenarios.\n\n**Missing claims are a first-class finding.** During hypothesis\ngeneration (step 3) you will encounter behaviors the implementation\nrelies on that no claim covers — Unicode normalisation policy,\nspecific timeout windows, edge-case error semantics. List these\nin the plan's \"Missing claims discovered\" section (template §1c).\nSurfacing them is one of the highest-value outputs of the whole\nexercise: it tells the maintainer where docs and implementation\nhave drifted apart.\n\n### 2. Scope the change OR the project\n\n**Change-scoped:** Identify the commit, PR, or feature under test.\nList every file touched and the surfaces (RPCs, on-disk formats,\nreplication messages, public APIs) affected. Build a one-paragraph\nblast-radius statement.\n\n**Project-wide:** No specific change. Instead, enumerate the system's\nexternally observable surfaces (public APIs, on-disk formats, wire\nprotocols, replication/consensus, background jobs, operational\ncontrols) and the invariants each must preserve. Declare what is\nin-scope and what is explicitly out-of-scope (adapters, ancillary\ntools, demo apps) — a project-wide plan that tries to cover\neverything covers nothing well.\n\n### 2b. Inventory existing tests (project-wide only)\n\nWalk the SUT's test surface: unit tests, integration tests, fault-\ninjection / stability harnesses, smoke scripts, CI workflows, and\nany test-plan / runbook docs. For each notable test or harness,\ncapture: what subsystem, what invariant it pins, and what failure\nmodes it would catch. This becomes the left-hand column of the\ncoverage matrix in step 4b.\n\nDo not re-test what is already covered well. The point of the gap\nanalysis is to surface what is NOT covered.\n\n### 3. Generate failure-mode hypotheses\n\nFor each claim from step 1b, ask: under what conditions could the\nSUT fail to honor this claim? Each hypothesis must be tied to one\nor more claims by number (\"could falsify C3 and C7\"). Tests exist\nto refute claims, not to \"check that things work\" — a passing test\nshould mean \"this claim survived this fault\", and a failing test\nshould name the claim it falsified.\n\n**Walk the pitfall catalog.** Before generating hypotheses from\nintuition, open `references/common-distributed-systems-pitfalls.md`.\nIt lists 16 failure modes that recur across the Jepsen analyses\ncorpus, each with a hypothesis template ready to paste-adapt. For\nevery pitfall, decide if it applies to this SUT: y / n / maybe.\nEvery `y` and most `maybe`s become hypothesis rows. This shortcut\nprevents the common failure mode of plans that only test what the\nagent already thought of.\n\nGenerate hypotheses for each touched surface (change-scoped) or\nin-scope surface (project-wide) across these categories:\ncorrectness, durability, liveness, partial failure, idempotency /\nreplay, upgrade / rollback, configuration, performance / fairness.\n\nIf a category is genuinely not applicable, say so explicitly. The act\nof writing \"N/A because…\" surfaces wrong assumptions more often than\nit sounds like it would.\n\n**Boundary and fairness claims trigger §7.M.S.** When you encounter a\nclaim about tenant isolation, authz, namespace, routing,\nmulti-protocol access, compatibility across API surfaces, or\nper-group fairness (noisy-neighbor, queue-group, per-region), tag it\nwith the `boundary` or `fairness` category in §1b. Both categories\ntrigger the surface-decomposition discipline in §7.M.S of every\nscenario that falsifies them — see\n`references/boundary-and-isolation-testing.md` for the boundary\nclaim matrix template and surface catalogs.\n\nIn project-wide mode the list is typically larger (the system has\nmore surfaces than any single change). Group hypotheses by subsystem\nso the gap-analysis table stays readable.\n\n### 4. Select techniques\n\nOpen `references/catalog-index.md` and find the techniques that match\nyour hypotheses. For each technique you pick, open its reference file\nand write down in the plan: which hypotheses it addresses, what it\nwould catch that other techniques would miss, the typical cost.\n\nFor scenarios that will be serious (any claim in `{safety, durability,\nidempotency, isolation, ordering, membership}`), also open the\nexecuting skill's `references/oracle-patterns.md` and use the\n\"Checker picker\" table at the top to pick the checker(s) matching\nyour model and claim category. The checker choice is part of the\nplan, not a runtime decision.\n\nA change usually warrants 2–4 techniques in combination. One technique\nis suspicious — re-check whether you've collapsed multiple distinct\nhypotheses into one. A project-wide plan typically reaches further\nacross the catalog (5–7 techniques) because the surface is larger.\n\n### 4b. Map coverage and identify gaps (project-wide only)\n\nBuild a table indexed by claim, not just by hypothesis. Each row:\nthe claim (C-number), the hypothesis that would falsify it, the\nexisting test(s) (from step 2b) that exercise it, the verdict\n(covered / partial / not covered), and the gap kind (no test /\nshallow test / oracle too weak / no fault-injection variant).\nSort by claim severity × gap so the highest-leverage gaps end up\nat the top.\n\nThis table is the heart of the project-wide plan. It tells the\nmaintainer where the product's claims are unverified.
