If it's wildly off, the page has\nmore than one repeating pattern and you should scope it. See below.\n\n## Why not just read the page\n\nOn the Hacker News front page, measured with `./scripts/measure.sh`:\n\n| approach | tokens | what you get |\n|---|---|---|\n| `extract --limit 30` | ~1,570 | all 30 stories as records with URLs |\n| `inspect` (accessibility tree) | ~5,650 | the tree, stories mixed into the page chrome |\n| raw HTML | ~8,730 | everything, including markup you'll never read |\n\nAll three contain the same 30 stories. Only the first hands them over as records; the\nothers hand over the page and leave the model to find the stories in it, which costs\ntwice — once in input tokens, again in the reasoning to parse them.\n\nThat's 5.6x against raw HTML and 3.6x against the accessibility tree on this page. It is\nnot always that wide: on a blog archive that is nothing *but* a list, `extract` returns\n~12,500 tokens against ~16,100 for the tree, because there's little page chrome to strip.\nThe win comes from pages where the records sit inside a lot of other markup.\n\n## When extract returns nothing\n\nIt looks for a repeating pattern, so a page without one gives you an empty list and a\nhint. That's the correct answer for an article or a landing page. The JSON the\npage fetched is cleaner than anything scraped out of the rendered DOM.\n\n## Scoping when a page has several patterns\n\n```bash\nchrome-agent extract --selector \".product-grid\"     # restrict to one container\nchrome-agent extract --limit 100                    # default is 10\n```\n\n## Lazy loading and infinite scroll\n\n```bash\nchrome-agent extract --scroll                # scrolls, waits for new nodes, then extracts\nchrome-agent extract --a11y --scroll --limit 50   # React/SPA feeds where the DOM is noise\n```\n\n`--a11y` reads the accessibility tree instead of the DOM. Use it when a site renders into\nnested generated `<div>`s (X.com, most React apps) and plain `extract` returns junk.\n\n## Sites that need a login\n\n```bash\nchrome-agent --copy-cookies goto https://app.example.com/reports\nchrome-agent --json extract\n```\n\n`--copy-cookies` reads cookies from your real Chrome profile, so anything you're already\nlogged into in your browser works here. On macOS the OS will prompt for Keychain access, and\nthat prompt is the consent step. It can't be skipped silently.\n\n## Sites that block automation\n\n```bash\nchrome-agent --stealth goto https://example.com     # Cloudflare, Turnstile\nchrome-agent --connect http://127.0.0.1:9222 goto https://example.com   # DataDome, Kasada\n```\n\nFor `--connect`, the user launches their own Chrome first:\n`google-chrome --remote-debugging-port=9222`. That's a real browser with a real\nfingerprint, which is what the hardest protections check.\n\n## Output\n\n`--json` gives `{\"ok\":true,\"count\":N,\"pattern\":\"...\",\"items\":[...]}`. Each item has\n`title`, `url` when there is one, and `fields` with the rest of the row's text. Errors\nexit 1 and still print JSON on stdout with an `error` and a `hint`.\n\n## Limits worth knowing\n\n- `extract` finds *one* pattern, the highest-scoring one. Pages with two equally strong\n  lists need `--selector` to pick.\n- It reads what's rendered. Content that only appears on hover or after a click isn't there\n  until you click it.\n- Record fields are positional text, not a typed schema.
