Detects the package manager automatically, runs audit commands, analyzes breaking changes for major version bumps, and outputs a prioritized update plan with risk assessment.\n\n## Called By (inbound)\n\n- `rescue` (L1): Phase 0 dependency health assessment\n- `audit` (L2): Phase 1 vulnerability scan and outdated dependency check\n\n## Calls (outbound)\n\nNone — pure L3 utility using Bash for package manager commands.\n\n## Executable Instructions\n\n### Step 1: Detect Package Manager\n\nUse `Glob` to find dependency files in the project root:\n\n- `package.json` → Node.js (npm, yarn, or pnpm)\n- `requirements.txt` or `pyproject.toml` → Python (pip or uv)\n- `Cargo.toml` → Rust (cargo)\n- `go.mod` → Go (go)\n- `Gemfile` → Ruby (bundler)\n\nIf multiple are found, process all of them. If none found, report NO_DEPENDENCY_FILES and stop.\n\nFor Node.js, further detect the package manager:\n- `yarn.lock` present → yarn\n- `pnpm-lock.yaml` present → pnpm\n- `package-lock.json` present → npm\n- None → default to npm\n\n### Step 2: List Dependencies\n\nUse `Read` to parse the dependency file and extract:\n- Package name\n- Current version constraint\n- Whether it is a dev dependency or production dependency\n\nFor `package.json`, read both `dependencies` and `devDependencies` sections.\n\n### Step 3: Check Outdated\n\nRun the appropriate command via `Bash` to find outdated packages:\n\n**npm:**\n```bash\nnpm outdated --json\n```\n\n**yarn:**\n```bash\nyarn outdated --json\n```\n\n**pnpm:**\n```bash\npnpm outdated\n```\n\n**pip:**\n```bash\npip list --outdated --format=json\n```\n\n**cargo:**\n```bash\ncargo outdated\n```\n\n**go:**\n```bash\ngo list -u -m all\n```\n\nParse the output to extract for each outdated package:\n- Current version\n- Latest version\n- Update type: `patch` | `minor` | `major`\n\n### Step 4: Check Vulnerabilities\n\nRun the appropriate audit command via `Bash`:\n\n**npm:**\n```bash\nnpm audit --json\n```\n\n**yarn:**\n```bash\nyarn audit --json\n```\n\n**pnpm:**\n```bash\npnpm audit --json\n```\n\n**pip:**\n```bash\npip-audit --format json\n```\n\n**cargo:**\n```bash\ncargo audit --json\n```\n\nIf the audit tool is not installed, note it as TOOL_MISSING and skip this step (do not fail).\n\nParse the output to extract:\n- Package name + vulnerable version\n- CVE ID (if available)\n- Severity: `critical` | `high` | `moderate` | `low`\n- Fixed version (if available)\n\n### Step 5: Analyze Breaking Changes\n\nFor each package with a **major** version bump (e.g. v2 → v3):\n\nUse `rune:docs-seeker` to look up migration guides if available, or note:\n- \"Breaking change analysis required before updating [package] from v[X] to v[Y]\"\n\nDo not blindly recommend major updates without flagging migration risk.\n\n### Step 6: Generate Update Plan\n\nCreate a prioritized update plan:\n\nPriority order:\n1. **CRITICAL** — packages with critical/high CVEs → update immediately\n2. **SECURITY** — packages with moderate/low CVEs → update in current sprint\n3. **PATCH** — patch version bumps, no breaking changes → safe to batch update\n4. **MINOR** — minor version bumps, new features added → update with testing\n5. **MAJOR** — major version bumps, breaking changes → plan migration separately\n\nFor each item in the plan, include:\n- Package name + current → target version\n- Update type and risk level\n- Migration notes (for major updates)\n- Suggested command to run the update\n\n### Step 7: Report\n\nOutput the following structure:\n\n```\n## Dependency Report: [project name]\n\n- **Package Manager**: [npm|yarn|pnpm|pip|cargo|go]\n- **Total Dependencies**: [count]\n- **Outdated**: [count]\n- **Vulnerable**: [count] ([critical] critical, [high] high, [moderate] moderate)\n\n### Critical — CVEs (Fix Immediately)\n- [package]@[current] — [CVE-ID] ([severity]): [description]\n  Fix: npm update [package]@[fixed_version]\n\n### Security — CVEs (Fix This Sprint)\n- [package]@[current] — [CVE-ID] ([severity]): [description]\n\n### Outdated — Patch (Safe to Update)\n- [package]@[current] → [latest] (patch)\n\n### Outdated — Minor (Update with Testing)\n- [package]@[current] → [latest] (minor)\n\n### Outdated — Major (Plan Migration)\n- [package]@[current] → [latest] (major) — migration guide required\n\n### Unused Dependencies\n- [package] — no imports found in src/\n\n### Update Plan (Ordered by Risk)\n1. [command] — requires migration: [notes]\n\n### Dependency Health Score\n- Score: [0-100]\n- Grade: A (80-100) | B (60-79) | C (40-59) | D (<40)\n- Score basis: -10 per critical CVE, -5 per high CVE, -2 per outdated major, -1 per outdated minor\n```\n\n## Upgrade Campaign Mode\n\nWhen health score < 60 OR CRITICAL/SECURITY items exist, dependency-doctor can orchestrate a full upgrade campaign — not just report, but execute. Triggered by: user says \"upgrade all\", \"fix deps\", \"run the update plan\", or health score triggers.\n\n### Campaign Chain\n\n```\n1. TRIAGE     → Run Steps 1-7 (standard report). Identify upgrade order.\n2. CHECKPOINT → Save current lock file state: `cp package-lock.json .rune/dep-backup/`\n3. PER-PACKAGE LOOP (CRITICAL → SECURITY → PATCH → MINOR, skip MAJOR):\n   a. Upgrade one package at a time: `npm install pkg@latest`\n   b. Call `rune:verification` — run tests + build\n   c. If PASS → commit: `feat(deps): upgrade {pkg} {old} → {new}`\n   d. If FAIL → rollback package: `npm install pkg@{old}`, log as BLOCKED\n4. MAJOR BUMPS → present to user: breaking change notes + migration guide link. Never auto-upgrade.\n5. REPORT     → final health score delta, packages upgraded/skipped/blocked\n```\n\n**One package at a time** — bulk upgrades make it impossible to identify which package broke the build.\n\n**MAJOR upgrades require:**\n- User confirmation\n- Breaking change summary (from npm docs or package CHANGELOG)\n- Migration checklist before upgrading\n\n### Calls (outbound — Campaign Mode only)\n\n- `verification` (L3): test + build after each package upgrade\n- `fix` (L2): when a minor/patch upgrade breaks tests and fix is straightforward\n\n## Output Format\n\nDependency Report with package manager, counts, CVE findings by severity, outdated packages by risk level, unused dependencies, ordered update plan, and health score (0-100). See Step 7 Report above for full template.\n\n## Constraints\n\n1. MUST check for known vulnerabilities — not just version freshness\n2. MUST NOT auto-upgrade major versions without user confirmation — breaking changes\n3. MUST verify project still builds after any dependency change\n4. MUST show what changed (added, removed, upgraded) in a clear diff format\n\n## Sharp Edges\n\nKnown failure modes for this skill.
