Report the task directory and unresolved gaps.\n\n## QEMU upstream boundary\n\nQEMU's official GitLab and mailing lists are upstream project channels. A\npatch becomes an upstream contribution when sent to the mailing-list recipients\nselected through `MAINTAINERS`; do not prepare or send agent-generated patches\nfor that submission. Local branches, commits, patch files, pushes, and pull\nrequests are not by themselves QEMU upstream contributions. Perform those Git\nactions only when requested and follow the workspace's Git policy.\n\n## Classify first\n\nIdentify the debug target:\n\n- guest code;\n- QEMU device model;\n- board topology/boot ABI;\n- QEMU core runtime;\n- TCG frontend;\n- TCG backend;\n- stale image/build/environment.\n\nDo not assume a model bug before command line and image provenance are known.\n\n## Host-side debugging of the QEMU process\n\nHost GDB controls the emulator process; the guest gdbstub controls guest CPU\nstate. Use host GDB or LLDB for QEMU crashes, assertions, hangs, migration\nbugs, TCG backend emission, or qtest-spawned failures.\n\nBefore attaching:\n\n- ensure the relevant binary is built with debug info;\n- record the exact QEMU command in `.oh-my-qemu/<task-slug>/commands.md`;\n- put debugger transcripts and notes under `.oh-my-qemu/<task-slug>/logs/`;\n- keep guest logs/traces separate from host debugger notes.\n\nCommon launch patterns:\n\n```bash\ngdb --args builds/build-riscv64/qemu-system-riscv64 <qemu-options>\ngdb -ex 'run' --args builds/build-riscv64/qemu-system-riscv64 <qemu-options>\nlldb -- builds/build-riscv64/qemu-system-riscv64 <qemu-options>\n```\n\nCommon attach patterns:\n\n```bash\ngdb -p <qemu-pid>\nlldb -p <qemu-pid>\n```\n\nFor qtest-spawned QEMU, use verbose qtest output to recover the exact command/environment. `QTEST_STOP=1` can stop the spawned QEMU early so a host debugger can attach before the test continues.\n\nUseful host-debugger checks:\n\n- backtrace of all threads;\n- current thread and frame around QEMU assertions;\n- breakpoints in device MMIO callbacks, reset hooks, realize paths, TCG translation, or qemu_ld/st helpers;\n- watchpoints on device state when corruption is suspected;\n- `handle SIGPIPE nostop noprint` and similar signal policy only after confirming it matches the failure;\n- thread names and event-loop state for hangs.\n\nIf guest execution must be paused while host debugging, combine host GDB with QEMU `-S` or an early qtest stop. Do not confuse a guest breakpoint with a host breakpoint.\n\n## Guest debugging with gdbstub\n\nUse:\n\n- `-s`: listen on TCP port 1234;\n- `-S`: start paused;\n- `-gdb dev`: choose another backend, such as `tcp::3117`, unix socket, chardev, or stdio.\n\nFor multi-cluster machines, use GDB `target extended-remote`, `add-inferior`, `inferior N`, `attach N`, and `set schedule-multiple on`.\n\nUseful GDB checks:\n\n- registers;\n- disassembly at PC;\n- virtual memory;\n- gdbstub physical memory mode;\n- QEMU single-step mask when IRQ/timer stepping matters.\n\n## QEMU logs and traces\n\nUse `-d item1,...` with `-D .oh-my-qemu/<task-slug>/logs/qemu.log`. Use `-d help` on the target binary to discover log items.\n\nUse `-dfilter` when a target PC range is known. Use `-accel tcg,one-insn-per-tb=on` to isolate guest-instruction boundaries.\n\nUse trace events for structured evidence:\n\n- `--trace \"pattern\"` for quick checks;\n- `--trace events=.oh-my-qemu/<task-slug>/scripts/trace-events.txt` for repeatable runs;\n- local `trace-events` files for source-side event definitions.\n\n## Replay and determinism\n\nFor intermittent bugs, use record/replay when applicable:\n\n- record: `-icount shift=auto,rr=record,rrfile=.oh-my-qemu/<task-slug>/logs/replay.bin`;\n- replay: `-icount shift=auto,rr=replay,rrfile=.oh-my-qemu/<task-slug>/logs/replay.bin`.\n\nRecord QEMU binary, image hashes, machine options, and replay file path.\n\n## Debug ladders\n\n### QEMU process\n\n1. Reproduce with the same QEMU binary and command line.\n2. Build with debug info if symbols are missing.\n3. Launch under host GDB/LLDB for startup failures, or attach to the running PID for hangs.\n4. Capture all-thread backtrace and the crashing/asserting frame.\n5. Set source breakpoints at the suspected QEMU path and rerun.\n6. Add traces or qtest reproduction only after the host-side failure location is known.\n\n### Device/board\n\n1. Confirm image and command line.\n2. qtest the MMIO/IRQ path if possible.\n3. Enable targeted traces.\n4. Check reset state and interrupt-controller route.\n5. Only then interpret full boot logs.\n\n### TCG\n\n1. Reproduce under `-accel tcg`.\n2. Use `one-insn-per-tb` for instruction boundary issues.\n3. Compare guest instruction, TCG IR, and host code logs.\n4. Check frontend feature gates and PC/TB state.\n5. Check backend constraints, optional flags, and emitted code.\n\n## Debug report\n\nWrite the report in `.oh-my-qemu/<task-slug>/audit.md` and include:\n\n- command;\n- build directory and QEMU binary;\n- whether debugger target is host QEMU process or guest CPU state;\n- image hashes;\n- failure marker;\n- decisive log/trace paths;\n- classification;\n- next narrow check.\n\nStop only QEMU processes, debugger servers, and terminal sessions started for\nthis task.
