Not every user is a programmer — some may be using octo for the first time. Briefly explain terms if you're in doubt.\n\n---\n\n## Creating a skill\n\n### Capture Intent\n\nStart by understanding the user's intent. The current conversation may already contain a workflow they want to capture.\n\nAsk:\n1. What should this skill enable octo to do?\n2. When should this skill trigger? (what user phrases / contexts)\n3. What's the expected output format?\n4. Should we set up test cases? Skills with objectively verifiable outputs (file transforms, code generation, fixed workflow steps) benefit from tests. Skills with subjective outputs (writing style, creative tasks) often don't.\n\n### Interview and Research\n\nProactively ask about edge cases, input/output formats, example files, success criteria, and dependencies.\n\nCheck available skills and tools — if useful for research, use subagents to search docs or find similar skills in parallel.\n\n### Where the skill lives\n\nA skill is a directory holding a `SKILL.md` under `~/.octo/skills/<name>/SKILL.md` —\navailable in every session, regardless of which project you're working in.\n`octo skills add` and the web Skills panel install here.\n\n### Write the SKILL.md\n\nThe format is a `SKILL.md` with YAML frontmatter:\n\n```markdown\n---\nname: my-skill\ndescription: When to trigger, what it does. Share them with the user for approval, then test.\n\n**How to test in octo:**\n1. Create a test workspace directory\n2. For each test prompt, spawn a subagent:\n   - Give it the skill path (`~/.octo/skills/<name>/`)\n   - Give it the test prompt as a task\n   - Have it save outputs to a designated directory\n3. Review outputs — both qualitatively and, if possible, with simple assertions\n4. Collect feedback and iterate\n\nIf the user says \"don't overthink it, just vibe with me,\" skip formal testing and iterate conversationally instead.\n\n---\n\n## Improving a skill\n\n### How to think about improvements\n\n1. **Generalize from feedback** — skills are meant to be used thousands of times. Don't overfit to test cases; fix the underlying pattern.\n2. **Keep the prompt lean** — remove instructions that aren't pulling their weight. Read the full execution trace, not just final outputs.\n3. **Explain the why** — today's LLMs are smart. Give them reasoning and they'll go beyond rote instructions.\n4. **Look for repeated work** — if test runs all independently wrote similar helper scripts, bundle one in `scripts/`.\n\n### The iteration loop\n\n1. Apply improvements to the skill\n2. Re-run all test cases (and baselines if applicable)\n3. Collect feedback\n4. Read feedback, improve again, repeat\n\nKeep going until the user is happy, feedback is empty (everything looks good), or you're not making meaningful progress.\n\n---\n\n## Description optimization\n\nThe `description` field is the primary triggering mechanism. After creating or improving a skill, offer to optimize it.\n\n### How to test triggering\n\n1. Generate 10–15 realistic user queries — a mix of:\n   - **Should-trigger** (5–7): queries where the skill would help. Vary formality, include edge cases, some without explicitly naming the skill.\n   - **Should-not-trigger** (5–7): near-miss queries that share keywords but don't need this skill. Make them genuinely tricky, not obviously irrelevant.\n\n2. Present them to the user for review and editing.\n\n3. Mentally simulate: for each query, would the current description cause the skill to be selected? Identify failures.\n\n4. Rewrite the description to fix misses and false positives. A good description:\n   - Covers the skill's domain broadly\n   - Includes specific trigger phrases\n   - Is slightly \"pushy\" (mentions related concepts the user might not explicitly name)\n   - Stays under ~200 words\n\n---\n\n## Modifying an existing skill\n\nWhen updating an existing skill:\n- **Preserve the original name** — use the existing directory name and frontmatter `name`\n- **Copy before editing** — if the installed path may be read-only, copy to `/tmp/`, edit there, then write back\n- **Read the current version first** — use `read_file` to see what's there before changing anything\n\n---\n\n## Packaging and delivery\n\nAfter the skill is done:\n1. Ensure the SKILL.md is well-formed (valid frontmatter, clear instructions)\n2. If bundled resources exist, verify they're referenced correctly from SKILL.md\n3.
