It's the foundation  -  8 of 11 content\nskills read `audience.md` to shape their output. Running this first makes\neverything downstream sharper.\n\nNo SaaS tools needed. Systematic research plus web search.\n\n---\n\n\n## On Activation\n\n1. Check if `brand/` directory exists in the project root.\n2. If it does, read available files: `voice-profile.md`, `positioning.md`, `audience.md`, `competitors.md`, `creative-kit.md`, `stack.md`, `learnings.md`.\n3. Apply any loaded brand context to enhance output quality  -  skip questions the user has already answered.\n4. If `brand/` does not exist, proceed without it  -  this skill works standalone.\n\n---\n\n## Iteration Detection\n\nBefore starting, check whether `./brand/audience.md` already exists.\n\n### If audience.md EXISTS --> Update Mode\n\nDo not start from scratch. Instead:\n\n1. Read the existing audience profile.\n2. Before overwriting, show what changed and ask for confirmation.\n\n### If audience.md DOES NOT EXIST --> Full Research Mode\n\nProceed to the full process below.\n\n---\n\n## The core job\n\nBuild a complete picture of who buys this product, why they buy it, where they\nhang out, and what language they use. The output is structured enough for other\nskills to parse but human enough to be useful for strategy.\n\n---\n\n## Approach selection\n\nChoose based on what's available:\n\n### Quick Profile (L0  -  zero context)\n\nWhen no brand files exist and minimal information is provided. Ask 5 key questions:\n\n1. **What does your product do?** (one sentence)\n2. **Who currently uses it?** (or who do you want to use it?)\n3. **What problem does it solve?** (the pain before, the relief after)\n4. **What alternatives exist?** (what would they do without you?)\n5. **What's the price point?** (free, $10/mo, $500/mo, enterprise?)\n\nFrom these 5 answers, generate a working persona. It won't be perfect but it\ngives every downstream skill something to work with.\n\n### Persona Build (L1-L2  -  some context)\n\nWhen you have basic product info or existing brand files. Systematic persona\nconstruction using demographics, psychographics, and jobs-to-be-done.\n\n### Community Mining (L3-L4  -  full research)\n\nWhen `exa-search` / Exa MCP or web search is available. Deep research into where the audience\nlives online, what language they use, what they complain about, and what they\naspire to.\n\n---\n\n## The audience research process\n\n### Step 1: Identify the transformation\n\nSame as positioning  -  start with the outcome, not the product.\n\n- What does the customer's life look like BEFORE? (the pain state)\n- What does it look like AFTER? (the desired state)\n- What's the gap between those two states?\n\nThe gap defines who your audience is: people stuck in the BEFORE state who want\nthe AFTER state but haven't found a good way to get there.\n\n### Step 2: Build buyer personas\n\nFor each distinct audience segment (usually 1-3), build:\n\n**Demographics** (who they are):\n- Role/title, company size, industry\n- Age range, income level, location\n- Technical sophistication\n\n**Psychographics** (how they think):\n- Goals and aspirations\n- Fears and frustrations\n- Values and beliefs about this category\n- How they make decisions (data-driven, social proof, gut feel)\n\n**Jobs-to-be-done** (why they hire your product  -  see `references/jtbd-framework.md` for the full framework, Forces of Progress, and job mapping template):\n- Functional job: What task are they trying to accomplish?\n- Emotional job: How do they want to feel?\n- Social job: How do they want to be perceived?\n\n**Language patterns** (how they talk):\n- Words they use to describe their problem\n- Jargon level (none, industry-standard, expert)\n- Tone they respond to (casual, professional, irreverent)\n\n### Step 3: Find watering holes\n\nWhere does this audience already gather? This is where you'll distribute content.\n\n**Search process** (use `exa-search` / Exa MCP when available):\n1. Search for \"[problem/topic] + reddit/forum/community\"\n2. Search for \"[job title/role] + newsletter/podcast/blog\"\n3. Search for \"[competitor name] + reviews/alternatives\"\n4. (time, money, stress)\n- What have they tried before that didn't work?\n\n**Objections** (what stops them from buying):\n- Price objections: \"Is it worth the money?\"\n- Trust objections: \"Will this actually work for me?\"\n- Effort objections: \"Is this going to be hard to implement?\"\n- Timing objections: \"Is now the right time?\"\n- Alternative objections: \"Can I just do this myself?\"\n\n### Step 5: Identify language mines\n\nSearch for actual quotes from the audience  -  Reddit posts, review sites, forum\nthreads, social media. These are gold for copywriting.\n\nLook for:\n- How they describe their problem (use their exact words)\n- Emotional language they use (frustrated, overwhelmed, stuck)\n- Aspirational language (wish I could, dream of, finally)\n- Comparison language (better than, unlike, switch from)\n\n---\n\n## Output format\n\nWrite `./brand/audience.md` with this structure. The `## Archetypes` block at the top is the structured contract consumed by Studio's archetype-pulse-cards and any future skill that needs a card-shaped persona summary.
