Do not use for formatter handling of comments in user code.\ncompatibility: Designed for coding agents working on the Biome codebase (github.com/biomejs/biome).\n---\n\n## Purpose\n\nDeveloper-facing comments and doc comments in this repository are read by\ncontributors, months or years after they were written, with none of the context\nyou have right now. This skill defines who that reader is, what each kind of\ncomment is for, and which patterns are banned.\n\n**Scope boundary:** rustdoc inside `declare_lint_rule!` / `declare_assist_rule!`\nblocks is end-user documentation generated into the website. Load this skill for\ncomment hygiene, but use\n[lint-rule-development](../lint-rule-development/SKILL.md) for the audience,\ncontent structure, examples, and option documentation. Its content rules take\nprecedence for those blocks.\n\n## The Reader\n\nFor developer-facing comments, write for a Biome contributor who is competent in Rust but has **no access to\nyour current context**: not this conversation, not the pull request, not the\nissue, not the diff. They see only the repository at HEAD.\n\nTwo consequences follow directly:\n\n1. **Never narrate change history.** Words like \"now\", \"previously\",\n   \"no longer\", \"the new approach\" are meaningless at HEAD, where only one\n   approach exists. State how the code works, not how it came to be.\n2. **Never address the reviewer.** A comment that argues your change is\n   correct (\"this properly handles X\") belongs in the PR description, not in\n   the source. The comment must justify the code as it stands, permanently.\n\n## Three Kinds of Documentation, Three Different Jobs\n\n| Kind | Job | Contains |\n| ---- | --- | -------- |\n| `//!` module docs | Explanation | Why the module exists, core concepts and terminology, how the pieces relate, design rationale |\n| `///` item docs | Reference | The contract: behavior, inputs and outputs, invariants, panics, errors. Neutral and factual |\n| `//` inline comments | Rationale | Only what the code cannot say: constraints, workarounds (with issue links), non-obvious coupling, why the obvious alternative is wrong |\n\nDo not mix the jobs. Implementation details do not belong in `///` docs — put\nthem as `//` comments inside the body. The contract does not belong scattered\nacross inline comments — put it on the item.\n\n## The Deletion Test\n\nBefore writing any comment, ask: **does this state something the reader cannot\nrecover from the code itself?**\n\n- If the information is already carried by names, types, or structure, do not\n  write the comment. If the name fails to carry it, improve the name.\n- Information that legitimately needs a comment: an invariant, a rationale, a\n  coupling to code elsewhere, a workaround with a link, surprising behavior of\n  a dependency, a term of art the module defines.\n\nWhen editing later, the same test applies in reverse: a comment that no longer\npasses it should be deleted, not left to rot.\n\n## Behavior Documentation\n\nWrite documentation for a human reader, not as a translation of the\nimplementation.\n\n- Start with a plain-language description of what the function returns or\n  accomplishes.\n- Use short or medium-length sentences. Keep one main idea per sentence.\n- Avoid internal jargon. If a technical term is necessary, explain what it means\n  in the same paragraph.\n- Describe business-logic caveats that can surprise callers. Examples include\n  fallback behavior, work limits, ambiguous results, overload ordering, and\n  conditions that return `None`, `Unknown`, or an indeterminate result.\n- Do not describe implementation details unless callers need them to understand\n  the behavior.\n\nAdd an example when the behavior depends on relationships that the function\nsignature cannot show clearly. Common cases include:\n\n- overload selection;\n- mapping arguments to optional or rest parameters;\n- following imports or re-exports across files;\n- fallback behavior for ambiguous or incomplete information;\n- a result whose meaning is not obvious from its type.\n\nIntroduce the example before the code block. State what the example demonstrates\nand what result is expected.\n\nKeep snippets minimal and self-contained.\n\nModule documentation should describe a durable concept or design reason. Do not\nlist individual functions or queries merely to summarize the file. Such lists\nbecome stale as items are added or renamed. If the module has no durable concept\nto explain, use a brief one-line description.\n\n## Banned Patterns\n\n**Narrating the next line.** Delete these on sight:\n\n```rust\n// Increment the generation counter\ngeneration += 1;\n```\n\n**Change-history narration.** Rewrite as present-tense rationale:\n\n```rust\n// BAD: We now intern types instead of cloning them.\n// GOOD: Interning avoids cloning these types on every lookup.\n```\n\n**Reviewer-addressed justification.** Move the argument to the PR:\n\n```rust\n// BAD: This correctly handles the overload case from the bug report.\n// GOOD: Overloads are matched by arity before parameter types, so a\n//       partial-arity call cannot select the wrong candidate.\n```\n\n**Restated rustdoc.** A `///` doc that rewords the item name says nothing:\n\n```rust\n// BAD:\n/// Handles the type inference.\nfn infer_types(...)\n\n// GOOD:\n/// Infers the type of `expr` in the scope of `module`, returning\n/// `TypeData::Unknown` when the expression references an unresolved import.\nfn infer_types(...)\n```\n\n**Vague hedging.** \"Some cases\", \"various reasons\", \"handles edge cases\",\n\"etc.\" — either name them or drop the sentence.\n\n**Ad-hoc section banners** (`// ----- helpers -----`, `// ==== TYPES ====`).\nFor grouping in long files, use the region comment pattern below instead.\n\n## Region Comments\n\nLong files group related items with paired region markers:\n\n```rust\n// #region FILE-LEVEL METHODS\n...\n// #endregion\n```\n\nThis is an established convention across the codebase (`biome_service`,\n`biome_module_graph`, `biome_rowan`, the parsers). The `Workspace` trait in\n[`crates/biome_service/src/workspace.rs`](../../../crates/biome_service/src/workspace.rs)\nuses it to group its methods (`PROJECT-LEVEL METHODS`, `FILE-LEVEL METHODS`,\n`SEARCH-RELATED METHODS`). Editors fold on these markers, which is the point:\nthey exist for navigation, not documentation.\n\nRules:\n\n- Every `// #region` has a matching `// #endregion`. An unpaired marker breaks\n  editor folding silently.\n- The name states what the group contains. It can be a plain label\n  (`Shared helpers`) or anchored to a function (`#region parse_thematic_break_parts`)\n  when the region holds one entry point and its private support code.\n- Use regions only where they earn their keep: files or `impl`/`trait` blocks\n  long enough that folding helps. A file that fits on two screens does not\n  need them.\n- A region name is organization, not documentation. It never substitutes for\n  rustdoc on the items inside it.\n\n## Editing Existing Code\n\n- Preserve existing doc comments. If your change alters behavior, extend or\n  correct the specific prose — never replace it with generic text. Deleting\n  hard-won context is worse than leaving a comment slightly stale.\n- Match the surrounding density. A heavily documented module deserves the same\n  level on new items; do not blanket a sparse module with comments.\n\n## Exemplar\n\nThe `//!` module docs at the top of\n[`crates/biome_service/src/workspace.rs`](../../../crates/biome_service/src/workspace.rs)\nshow the target register. They define a term the rest of the module depends on\n(\"open documents\") and give its meaning in both the LSP and CLI contexts; they\nexplain a design decision the signatures alone would make confusing (the\nworkspace is stateful, yet every method takes `&self`, because the trait must\nbe thread-safe and caching happens internally); and they state the error\nphilosophy once, at the top, instead of repeating it on every method.\nEverything is present tense; nothing mentions how the design evolved or\ndefends a change.\n\n## Self-Check Before Finishing\n\nAfter completing any task that touched comments, re-read **only the comments\nin your diff**, in isolation from the code changes:\n\n1. Does each one pass the deletion test?\n2. Does any reference the conversation, the change itself, or the reviewer?\n3. Would a reader without access to the diff understand each one?\n\nFix or delete what fails.
