Its purpose is to keep the test suite fast, trustworthy, behavior-focused, and aligned with Android’s testing guidance while still respecting shared KMP boundaries and Compose Multiplatform testing patterns.\n\n## Primary goals\n\nThe testing strategy should optimize for:\n\n- strong confidence in business logic\n- fast feedback from local/unit tests\n- clear separation between local, Robolectric, instrumented, and UI tests\n- behavior-focused tests instead of implementation-detail tests\n- appropriate use of test doubles\n- stable and performant larger tests\n- isolated testing of shared KMP logic\n- practical Compose Multiplatform UI test coverage\n- targeted screenshot testing where visual regressions matter\n\nDo not optimize for raw coverage percentages alone.\nOptimize for confidence, speed, signal quality, and maintainability.\n\n---\n\n## Official defaults to prefer\n\nUnless the project has a strong reason not to, prefer these defaults:\n\n- many small local/unit tests\n- fewer integration tests\n- fewer end-to-end/UI tests than lower-level tests\n- tests focused on user-visible behavior and business outcomes\n- use of test doubles to isolate dependencies\n- `kotlin.test` for assertions and test declarations in shared KMP test source sets — this is the cross-platform test API recommended by JetBrains and works across JVM, native, and JS/Wasm targets\n- local tests in `src/test` (JVM-side tests in Android modules)\n- Android instrumented tests in `src/androidTest`\n- Robolectric only when Android framework behavior is needed but device execution is not necessary\n- common Compose Multiplatform UI tests where the behavior is truly shared\n- stable UI tests with clear synchronization and controlled environment setup\n- screenshot tests for important visual surfaces when appearance regressions matter\n\n---\n\n## Test strategy defaults\n\n### 1. Testing pyramid\n\nPrefer a pyramid-shaped suite:\n\n- many unit tests\n- fewer integration tests\n- fewer UI/end-to-end tests\n\nReview expectation:\n- lower-level tests should catch most regressions\n- larger tests should validate integration and user workflows, not replace unit coverage\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- most confidence depends on slow UI tests\n- business logic is only exercised through end-to-end flows\n- the suite is top-heavy and expensive to run\n\n### 2. Behavior over implementation detail\n\nPrefer tests that validate:\n- observable outputs\n- state transitions\n- user-visible effects\n- business rules\n\nBe cautious with tests that lock down:\n- internal private structure\n- implementation-specific sequencing that users do not observe\n- framework internals\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- tests fail after harmless refactors\n- mocks assert incidental calls instead of real behavior\n- UI tests are verifying widget internals rather than actual interaction outcomes\n\n---\n\n## Test-scope review dimensions\n\n### 3. What should be tested first\n\nPrioritize tests for:\n\n- business rules\n- domain/use-case behavior\n- repository coordination logic\n- DTO/domain/UI mapping\n- state-holder transitions\n- failure and retry handling\n- navigation decision logic where important\n- shared UI behavior that is meaningful across targets\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- trivial pass-through code is heavily tested while important rules are not\n- mapping and error paths are untested\n- state transitions are inferred rather than verified\n\n### 4. Local unit tests\n\nLocal tests should be the default choice for fast feedback.\n\nFor **shared KMP modules**, tests in `commonTest` (using `kotlin.test`) run on all declared targets — JVM, native, JS/Wasm — making them the correct layer for shared business logic. Do not confuse `commonTest` (shared KMP tests) with `src/test` (Android/JVM-local tests).\n\nCheck whether:\n- pure Kotlin/shared logic is tested in `commonTest` using `kotlin.test`, not pushed into Android-specific test layers\n- Android-specific behavior is tested in `src/test` (local JVM) or `src/androidTest` (instrumented), not in shared test source sets\n- test setup avoids Android device/emulator dependency when unnecessary\n- most business logic tests live in the lowest practical test layer\n\nReview expectations:\n- shared logic in KMP should be exercised in `commonTest` first, before platform-specific layers\n- `src/test` remains the main home for fast-running JVM-side tests on Android-only modules\n- local tests are preferred unless the behavior truly needs Android runtime support\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- shared business logic is only tested in Android-specific layers (`src/androidTest`) without reason\n- the suite pays emulator/device cost for logic that could be a `commonTest` unit test\n- `kotlin.test` is not used in shared source sets — shared tests depend on JUnit directly, breaking non-JVM targets\n\n### 4a. kotlin.test for shared source sets\n\nIn KMP projects, shared test source sets (e.g., `commonTest`) should use `kotlin.test` for assertions and test structure. `kotlin.test` provides `@Test`, `assertEquals`, `assertNotNull`, `assertFailsWith`, and other essentials that compile correctly for all KMP targets (JVM, native, JS, Wasm).\n\nCheck whether:\n- shared test code uses `kotlin.test` rather than JUnit or platform-specific assertion libraries\n- `kotlin.test` is declared as a dependency in the `commonTest` source set\n- platform-specific test libraries (JUnit, XCTest wrappers) are added only in platform-specific test source sets when needed\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- JUnit annotations or assertions appear in `commonTest` without a JVM-only source set constraint\n- shared tests fail on native or JS targets because of JVM-specific test infrastructure\n- `kotlin.test` is absent from a KMP project's test dependencies despite having shared business logic\n\n### 5. Robolectric usage\n\nRobolectric is an Android-only testing tool. It is not available in KMP shared test source sets — it can only be used in Android-specific test source sets (`src/test` in an Android module, or an `androidUnitTest` source set in a KMP module). Do not attempt to configure Robolectric in `commonTest`.\n\nRobolectric is useful when Android-dependent behavior must be exercised on the JVM without a real device or emulator.\n\nCheck whether:\n- Robolectric is used for Android framework interactions that do not require full device/emulator fidelity\n- it is placed in Android-specific test source sets, not shared KMP test source sets\n- it is not used as a default for tests that could be plain local tests or `kotlin.test` unit tests\n- the project uses it intentionally rather than as a catch-all compromise\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- Robolectric is used for pure business logic that does not interact with Android APIs\n- device-only behavior is assumed to be fully proven by Robolectric alone\n- the suite becomes slow and brittle because Robolectric is overused\n- Robolectric dependencies appear in shared KMP source sets\n\n### 6. Instrumented tests\n\nInstrumented tests should cover behavior that genuinely needs a real Android runtime, emulator, or device.\n\nCheck whether:\n- Android integration behavior is validated in `src/androidTest`\n- tests that need framework/runtime fidelity are placed here\n- instrumented tests are selective rather than the default\n\nGood candidates:\n- platform integration\n- app-component interactions\n- behavior that depends on real Android runtime semantics\n- high-value UI flows\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- most feature validation lives only in instrumented tests\n- instrumented tests are used for logic that should be local\n- test layering is blurry and costly\n\n### 7. Compose Multiplatform UI tests\n\nCompose Multiplatform supports shared UI testing.\n\nCheck whether:\n- shared UI behavior is tested in common code when it is genuinely shared\n- `runComposeUiTest` is used for common Compose Multiplatform UI tests (note: as of mid-2025, `runComposeUiTest` requires `@OptIn(ExperimentalTestApi::class)`; verify stability status against the current Compose Multiplatform release)\n- platform-specific setup is added only when required\n- shared UI tests focus on semantics and observable behavior\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- shared UI can only be validated through Android-only tests without reason\n- common UI tests are skipped despite heavily shared Compose behavior\n- tests depend too much on implementation details instead of semantics\n\n### 8. AndroidX Test setup discipline\n\nAndroidX Test setup should be coherent and intentional.\n\nCheck whether:\n- test runners, rules, and AndroidX Test dependencies are configured consistently\n- instrumented tests use the standard test infrastructure instead of ad hoc setup\n- test environment setup is centralized enough to avoid drift\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- instrumented test setup differs arbitrarily across modules\n- runner/rule configuration is duplicated or inconsistent\n- test infrastructure itself becomes hard to trust\n\n---\n\n## Test doubles\n\n### 9. Appropriate test-double choice\n\nChoose test doubles deliberately.\n\nCommon categories:\n- fake\n- mock\n- stub\n- spy\n\nPrefer:\n- fakes for repositories, data sources, and meaningful behavior simulation\n- stubs for simple fixed responses\n- mocks only when interaction verification is actually the point\n- spies sparingly\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- everything is mocked by default\n- tests are interaction-heavy but behavior-light\n- a fake would express the scenario more clearly than a deep mock tree\n\n### 10. Dependency isolation\n\nCheck whether:\n- tests isolate external systems appropriately\n- network, database, file, and platform dependencies are replaced when the test does not need them\n- doubles reduce flakiness and improve speed\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- tests depend on real external services unnecessarily\n- fake/test data behavior diverges so much from production that the test misleads\n- the chosen double makes the test harder to understand\n\n---\n\n## Stability and performance for larger tests\n\n### 11. Big-test stability\n\nAndroid’s guidance treats stability as a first-class quality attribute for larger tests.\n\nCheck whether:\n- tests control asynchronous work predictably\n- environment setup is repeatable\n- test state is isolated between runs\n- flakiness sources are identified and reduced\n- retries are not hiding real nondeterminism\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- UI/integration tests pass only intermittently\n- timing assumptions replace synchronization\n- global shared state leaks between tests\n\n### 12. Performance of instrumented tests\n\nInstrumented tests should be optimized because they are expensive.\n\nCheck whether:\n- the instrumented suite stays focused on high-value scenarios\n- setup and teardown are not wasteful\n- large tests are not duplicated unnecessarily across many layers\n- performance-sensitive test suites are monitored and trimmed\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- large tests are used where local tests would suffice\n- startup/setup costs dominate every test\n- the suite becomes too slow to run regularly\n\n---\n\n## UI testing guidance\n\n### 13. UI tests should validate behavior\n\nUI tests should focus on what the user can do and observe.\n\nCheck whether:\n- assertions reflect visible behavior or meaningful semantics\n- user actions are modeled realistically\n- UI tests validate flows, not incidental structure\n\nFlag as a concern when:\n- tests lock onto fragile implementation details\n- the suite checks internal tree shapes with little user value\n- behavior is under-tested while low-value rendering details dominate\n\n### 14.
