The expected `matlab-generate-grader-assessments` output is:\n\n- `description.txt`\n- `template.m`\n- `solution.m`\n- `tests.m`\n- `function_call.m` (Function assessment items)\n- `supporting_class.m` (Object usage assessment items)\n\nStore the `matlab-generate-grader-assessments` output under:\n\n```text\ngrader-items/module-NN-activity-MM-[slug]/\n```\n\n`[slug]` is the assessment item's snake_case title with underscores replaced by\nhyphens. This wrapper placement overrides the generator's standalone\n`{snake_title}/` folder rule.\n\nDo not hand-write these files first. If `matlab-generate-grader-assessments` is unavailable, stop and report\nthat MATLAB Exercise generation is blocked unless the user explicitly accepts a\nplanning-only fallback.\n\n## Step 3: Split Description for Course Designer\n\nCreate two plaintext `.m` files from `description.txt` for copy/paste into the\nMATLAB Course Designer web application:\n\nPer the MATLAB Course Designer documentation for creating MATLAB Exercises:\nhttps://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab-and-simulink-online-courses/ug/create-matlab-exercise-using-matlab-course-designer.html\n\n- The Background field sets the context for the task, explains the learning\n  objective, and provides high-level information learners need to complete the\n  task.\n- The Task field provides the instructions learners follow to complete the\n  task, including specific instructions such as which functions or variable\n  names to use.\n\nTreat `background.m` and `task.m` as plain-text field transport files, not\nexecutable MATLAB scripts. Preserve the text exactly as it should be pasted into\nCourse Designer. Do not prefix prose with `%` solely to make the files valid\nMATLAB code.\n\nSplit workflow:\n\n1. Read `description.txt` once and mark each paragraph as context, objective,\n   prerequisite, instruction, deliverable, constraint, self-check, or grading\n   detail.\n2. Put only context, purpose, learning objective, and necessary high-level\n   prerequisite information in `background.m`.\n3. Put concrete learner instructions, ordered task steps, deliverables, required\n   variable/function/file names, constraints, expected outputs, and self-check\n   prompts in `task.m`.\n4. Move implementation details out of `background.m` and into `task.m`.\n5. Move broad conceptual exposition out of `task.m` unless it is needed to\n   understand a specific instruction.\n6. If `description.txt` has no clear boundary, create a concise background from\n   the opening context and put the full actionable prompt in `task.m`.\n7. Keep hidden-test details, reference solution details, and grading mechanics\n   out of both files unless they are intentionally learner-facing.\n8. Do not modify the original `description.txt`; keep it in the `matlab-generate-grader-assessments` source\n   folder.\n\nQuality check:\n\n- `background.m` should still make sense if read before seeing the task steps.\n- `task.m` should be actionable without duplicating the full background.\n- Both files should be ready to paste into Course Designer text fields without\n  cleanup.\n\n## Step 4: Add Course Designer Fields\n\nCreate the Course Designer MATLAB Exercise activity from the `matlab-generate-grader-assessments` output.\nAdd fields that are needed by MATLAB Course Designer but not generated by the\nfirst-pass component workflow:\n\n- `background.m` and `task.m` copy/paste fields\n- Module placement and learning activity order\n- Estimated time\n- Prerequisite context\n- Required products and toolboxes\n- Learner setup notes\n- Course Designer persistence notes\n- Optional Common Cartridge placement notes\n\n## Step 5: Validate MATLAB Files\n\nUse `references/matlab-validation-rules.md`.\n\nAt minimum:\n\n- Confirm `solution.m`, `template.m`, and `tests.m` exist.\n- Run `check_matlab_code` on `solution.m`, `template.m`, and `tests.m` only.\n  `background.m` and `task.m` are plain-text copy/paste fields, not valid\n  MATLAB code, and must not be linted.\n- Execute or smoke-test `solution.m` when runnable.\n- Validate `tests.m` syntax and MATLAB Exercise assess calls where possible.\n- Confirm the learner template preserves the expected names and scaffold.\n- Write all results to `validation-report.md`.\n\nWhen execution is not possible because the generated item requires MATLAB\nGrader runtime functions, run static checks and targeted syntax checks, then\nmark runtime validation as partial.\n\n## Step 6: Course Designer Activity Artifacts\n\nUse `references/course-designer-artifacts.md`.\n\nWrite these files in the activity folder:\n\n- `activity.md`\n- `background.m`\n- `task.m`\n- `instructor-notes.md`\n- `validation-report.md`\n- `course-designer-activity.json`\n- `grader-source.md`, the reference file that maps the activity to its\n  `grader-items/` source folder and component files (see\n  `references/course-designer-artifacts.md`)\n\nThe `course-designer-activity.json` file is the import-oriented sidecar for\nfuture Course Designer API work.
