Triggers on \"commit\", \"git commit\", \"conventional\", or when reviewing commit message format.\nuser-invocable: true\n---\n\n# Conventional Commit Skill\n\nCreate coherent, reviewable commits that follow the\n[Conventional Commits](https://www.conventionalcommits.org/) specification.\nMessage syntax matters, but the selected changes must tell one clear story too.\n\n## Message Format\n\nEvery generated commit has a title and body:\n\n```\n<type>(<scope>): <imperative title>\n\n<1-5 lines describing the change and, when useful, its reason or effect>\n```\n\nUse a lowercase scope that identifies the affected component. The title is concise,\nimperative, lowercase, and has no trailing period. The body is concrete: explain the\nbehavior, motivation, or important implementation decision rather than restating the title.\n\n| Type | Use for |\n|------|---------|\n| `feat` | New user-facing capability |\n| `fix` | Corrected behavior |\n| `docs` | Documentation only |\n| `style` | Formatting only |\n| `refactor` | Restructuring without behavior change |\n| `test` | Tests only |\n| `chore` | Maintenance or tooling |\n| `perf` | Performance improvement |\n| `ci` | Continuous integration configuration |\n| `build` | Build system or dependencies |\n| `revert` | Reverting a prior commit |\n\nBreaking changes may use `!` after the type or scope, a `BREAKING CHANGE:` footer, or both.\nInclude issue footers such as `Closes #123` only when the issue is known.\n\n## Create a Commit\n\nWhen the user asks to commit, first inspect the complete worktree:\n\n1. Run `git status --short`.\n2. Read both `git diff --cached` and `git diff` so pre-staged work is not mistaken for the entire change.\n3. List untracked files with `git ls-files --others --exclude-standard` and inspect relevant ones.\n4. Read recent subjects with `git log --oneline -10` to match established scopes and wording.\n5. Flag likely secrets, credentials, local configuration, or generated output. Do not stage them without explicit direction.\n\n### Decide Whether to Split\n\nDefault to one commit containing all intended, related changes. Look for an obvious\nfile-level split only when changes are independent and each group can stand alone.\n\nKeep these together:\n\n- Implementation and its tests.\n- Documentation that describes the same change.\n- Dependency manifests and their lockfiles.\n\nDo not invent a split for adjacent work, use hunk-level staging, or force the user\nto reorganize a coherent change. If an obvious split exists, propose each commit with\nits files and full message, then ask once for approval. If not, propose one commit.\n\n### Approve, Stage, Commit\n\nBefore making any write, show:\n\n- The files in each proposed commit.\n- The full title and 1-5 line body for each commit.\n- Any excluded files and why they are excluded.\n\nAsk for approval unless the user explicitly authorizes committing immediately. After\napproval, stage only the files for the approved commit with `git add -- <paths>` and\ninspect `git diff --cached --name-status` and `git diff --cached` again. If the staged snapshot\ncontains any unapproved file, stop and ask how to handle it. Then commit with the proposed title\nand body. Do not amend, rebase, push, or include unapproved files.\n\nRepository commit hooks are the final message validation when configured. Never bypass\na failing hook. Report the commit hash on success; report the error and leave changes\nintact on failure.\n\n## Validate a Commit Message\n\nWhen the user asks to validate a message, check:\n\n1. It follows `type(scope): imperative title`.\n2. The type is listed above and the scope is lowercase.\n3. The title is lowercase, imperative, concise, and has no trailing period.\n4. A body follows after a blank line and contains 1-5 meaningful lines.\n5. Breaking changes use both `!` and a `BREAKING CHANGE:` footer.\n\nReturn specific corrections and a revised message. When the repository configures\ncommitlint, use it as the authoritative validation rule.\n\n### Delegated: Pull Request Creation\n\nIf the user wants to create a PR after committing, invoke the\n[code-pull-request](../code-pull-request/SKILL.md) skill.
