It is invoked\nfrom `docs/graph/protocols/specify.md`.\n\nA spec is **executable** when every functional contract maps to at\nleast one test in the suite and the test name names the contract.\nSpecs that read like marketing or like implementations are not specs.\n\n## When to apply this skill\n\n- `brainstorm` has converged and the next step is to formalize the\n  behavior.\n- An existing feature's contract is changing.\n- A bug investigation revealed a contract that was implicit and is\n  now being made explicit.\n- An ADR introduces a new system behavior that needs a spec.\n\n## How to write each section\n\n### §1 Summary\n\nOne paragraph. What this spec covers and why. No marketing, no\nphilosophy. Pretend you're explaining to the next agent on the team\nin two sentences what they're about to implement.\n\n### §2 Scope\n\nTwo bullet lists: \"in scope\" and \"out of scope\". The out-of-scope\nbullets are equally important. Reading the spec a year later, the\nout-of-scope list is what tells the next agent \"no, we considered\nthat and excluded it deliberately.\"\n\n### §3 User-facing behavior (product)\n\nDescribe what the user experiences. Use the user's vocabulary, not\nthe system's. If the spec is for an internal API or a job, the\n\"user\" might be another service or a developer — name them and\ndescribe their experience.\n\n### §4 Functional contracts (architect)\n\nThe heart of the spec. Each contract is one Given/When/Then, single-\noutcome, observable from outside.\n\n**Naming.** Use `UPPER_SNAKE_CASE` slugs that read as sentences.\nTester turns these into test names.\n\n```\n### Contract: SUBMIT_VALID_FORM_RETURNS_2XX\n### Contract: SUBMIT_FORM_SCHEMA_INVALID\n### Contract: SUBMIT_FORM_PERSISTS_RECORD\n### Contract: GET_SUBMITTED_RECORD_RETURNS_BY_ID\n```\n\n(The `### ` heading form is load-bearing: `spec-lint.py` only counts\n`### Contract: SLUG` headings as live contracts — a bare `Contract:` line\nis invisible to coverage.)\n\n**One outcome per contract.** \"Returns 201 *and* sends an email\" is\ntwo contracts: one for the response, one for the side effect.\n\n**Observable from outside.** If the test has to inspect a private\nfield, the contract is wrong. Move the observation to a public\nsurface (a returned value, a queried record, an emitted event).\n\n### §5 Non-functional requirements\n\nOnly the constraints that bind this behavior — the template carries\nthe category list and the bind-only rule at point of use.\n\n### §6 Data shapes (architect)\n\nSchemas for inputs, outputs, persisted state. Use a language-\nagnostic notation (YAML-like) by default; cross-link to native\nschema files when they exist.\n\nRequired fields, types, allowed values, max sizes. These become\ntest fixtures and validation rules.\n\n### §7 Failure modes (architect, with security)\n\nFor each contract, the named ways it can fail and what happens.\nThis is what separates a spec from a description.\n\n```\nFailure: SUBMIT_FORM_SCHEMA_INVALID\n- Trigger: payload violates §6 schema\n- Response: 422 with field-level error in body\n- Side effects: audit log entry; nothing persisted\n- Recovery: client may resubmit with corrections\n```\n\nSecurity adds adversarial cases here: prompt injection, tool\nhijacking, data exfiltration when AI is involved.\n\n### §8 Examples\n\nConcrete input/output pairs. Three minimum: one happy, one edge,\none failure. Examples are the seed for test fixtures — make them\nreal values, not `<placeholders>`.\n\n### §9 Acceptance criteria (product)\n\nMeasurable conditions for \"done\". Each criterion maps to one or\nmore contracts in §4 and to one or more tests in §10.\n\nAcceptance criteria include the non-functional ones (latency,\naccessibility). Don't let non-functional become \"we'll do that\nlater\" — write them down so the tester can encode them.\n\n### §10 Test mapping (tester)\n\nA table mapping each contract and each acceptance criterion to the\ntests that cover them. Update as tests are written. Status values:\n`pending` (no test yet), `red` (test exists, fails), `green` (test\nexists, passes), `skipped` (with reason).\n\n### §11 Open questions\n\nEvery \"we'll decide later\" with a named resolution path. A spec\nwith open questions stays in `draft`.\n\n## The sign-off rule\n\nA spec is not promoted from `draft` to `active` until:\n- **product ✓** confirms §3 and §9 reflect the user outcome.\n- **architect ✓** confirms §4, §6, §7 are coherent.\n- **tester ✓** confirms every contract in §4 is testable (the\n  testability review).\n- **security ✓** if the spec touches auth, secrets, payments,\n  uploads, external integrations, or AI behaviors that act on\n  data.\n\nSign-off goes in §0 (Metadata) — and the spec stays `draft`. Sign-off\nsays the contract is authoritative; `active` says it is under test. The\nstatus moves in the change that lands the spec's first RED tests\n(`test-first`'s COMMIT; `verify.status-evidence` owns the moment), and to\n`implemented` when every contract is green. A live status over an empty\nassertion set is a false green, which is why a signed draft is never\npromoted early to \"get the gate going\".\n\nBefore a spec is signed, its prose passes `docs/graph/skills/humanizer.md`\nin file mode and `python3 docs/graph/prose-lint.py --file <spec> --against HEAD`\nreports no strong tell and no dropped contract slug, number, or code span.\n\nThe sign-offs are judgment; the shape and the coverage are mechanical.\n`python3 docs/graph/spec-lint.py` (the §3.1 gate in\n`docs/graph/protocols/verify.md`) checks every spec's shape — unique\nslugs, a §10 row per contract, §9 criteria that map to real slugs, sign-offs\npresent on anything past `draft` — and, for live specs, that every slug\nappears in at least one test. A draft is shape-checked and not counted for\ncoverage, so a spec in authoring never reports uncovered.\n\n## Spec drift management\n\nWhen the code and the spec disagree, do not silently sync the spec\nto the code. Decide:\n- **Code is right, spec is wrong:** edit the spec deliberately,\n  add a §12 changelog entry, get re-sign-off.\n- **Spec is right, code is wrong:** file a bug, add a regression\n  test, fix the code.\n- **Both partially right:** the brainstorm needs to revisit the\n  contract; back up to `brainstorm` or `specify` and write a new\n  version.\n\n## Anti-patterns\n\n- **Spec as marketing.** \"The system seamlessly empowers users…\"\n  Cut that. Contracts.\n- **Spec as implementation.** \"Stores the record in Postgres.\"\n  Wrong layer; that goes in grill.md §8.\n- **No failure modes section.** Happy-path-only specs are half\n  specs.\n- **No examples.** Examples turn abstract contracts into\n  concrete tests.\n- **One giant contract that says everything.** Many small,\n  single-outcome contracts that compose.\n- **Skipped sign-offs.** A spec without all three sign-offs is\n  unsigned; nobody plans against it.\n- **Promoted at sign-off.** `active` with no test is a red gate until\n  RED lands and a false green after someone silences it.
