This skill is complementary\nto `ansible-good-practices` which reviews code against Red Hat CoP\nautomation good practices. This skill focuses on **official Ansible\ndocumentation** — module usage, playbook syntax, inventory patterns,\nplugin development, deprecations, porting guides, lint rules, navigator\nconfiguration, execution environments, content creation, and molecule\ntesting.\n\n## Dependency: ansible-know MCP server\n\nThis skill **requires** the `ansible-know` MCP server (v0.7.0+) which\nprovides the `search_docs` and `fetch_doc` tools used for documentation\ndiscovery and retrieval.\n\nBefore proceeding, verify that the `search_docs` and `fetch_doc` MCP\ntools from the `ansible-know` server are available in the current\nsession. If either tool is not available:\n\n1. Report to the user: \"The ansible-docs skill requires the ansible-know\n   MCP server, which is not configured in this session.\"\n2. Provide the install command:\n   ```\n   uvx ansible-know-mcp\n   ```\n3. Suggest adding it to Claude Code MCP config:\n   ```\n   claude mcp add ansible-know -- uvx ansible-know-mcp\n   ```\n4. For general\nAnsible questions, omit `source` to search all available sources.\n\n## How to answer questions\n\n### Step 1: Analyze the user's prompt\n\nParse the user's message to determine what documentation is needed.\n\n**For questions (Q&A mode):**\n- Extract topic keywords: \"loops\", \"handlers\", \"variables\", \"inventory\",\n  \"vault\", \"roles\", \"conditionals\", \"facts\", \"templates\", \"lint rules\",\n  \"navigator settings\", \"execution environment\", \"molecule scenario\", etc.\n- Identify if the question targets a specific ecosystem tool — if so,\n  note the `source` to filter on.\n- Identify specific module or plugin names (FQCNs like\n  `ansible.builtin.copy`, `ansible.builtin.template`).\n- Note if asking about deprecations or porting (search for \"porting\"\n  or \"deprecated\").\n\n**For code review (code review mode):**\n- Read the Ansible code first.\n- Scan for directives: `roles:`, `vars:`, `loop:`, `handlers:`,\n  `when:`, `register:`, `notify:`, `block:`, `rescue:`, `become:`,\n  `delegate_to:`, etc.\n- Extract module FQCNs used in tasks.\n- Note `with_*` patterns (may need migration guidance).\n- Check for deprecated syntax patterns.\n- Identify 2-4 distinct topic areas from the code to search for.\n\n### Step 2: Search for relevant documentation\n\nCall `search_docs` with the extracted keywords. The tool returns up\nto 20 results per call, each with: `title`, `summary`, `topic`,\n`audience`, `lines`, `source`, `url`.\n\nGuidelines:\n- Formulate 1-3 targeted search queries (2-4 words each) based on\n  the extracted keywords.\n- If the question targets a specific tool, pass `source` to narrow\n  results.\n- For core Ansible concepts, pass `core_only: true` to prioritize\n  curated entries.\n- Select the most relevant results by matching title and summary\n  to the user's question.\n\n### Step 3: Fetch and read documentation\n\nFor each selected search result, call `fetch_doc` with its `url`.\nThe tool returns: `content` (clean markdown), `title`, `tokens`\n(token count), `source_url`.\n\n**Context budget:** Do not fetch more than **50,000 tokens** total\nacross all pages in a single invocation. Use the `lines` field from\nsearch results as a rough pre-fetch estimate (~10 tokens per line).\nAfter each fetch, track the cumulative `tokens` from the response.\n\nWhen the budget is tight:\n- Fetch the single most relevant page first. If it consumes less\n  than 30,000 tokens, fetch a second page.\n- Use the `max_tokens` parameter as a guard on individual fetches.\n  When `max_tokens` is set and the page exceeds it, `fetch_doc`\n  returns an error (not truncated content) — retry without\n  `max_tokens` if budget allows, or skip the page.\n- If `fetch_doc` returns any error, skip the page and note to the\n  user that it could not be loaded.\n\nAfter fetching, extract the relevant sections from the markdown\ncontent rather than using the entire page verbatim.\n\n## Response modes\n\n### Q&A mode\n\nWhen the user asks a question about Ansible (triggered by `$ARGUMENTS`\ncontaining a question, or no code path):\n\n1. Search and fetch the most relevant documentation (Steps 1-3 above)\n2. Answer the question grounded in the fetched docs\n3. **Cite sources** — for every claim, reference the documentation URL\n   and section heading. Use the `source_url` field from `fetch_doc`\n   responses (or the `url` field from `search_docs` results if the\n   page was not fetched). Format: `(source: <url>, section: \"{heading}\")`\n4. If the docs do not cover the topic, say so explicitly:\n   \"The available Ansible documentation does not cover this topic.\"\n5. Provide code examples from the docs when they exist\n6. If the question relates to a specific Ansible version, search for\n   porting guides for version-specific changes\n7. If the question spans multiple ecosystem tools, search across the\n   relevant sources\n\n### Code review mode\n\nWhen the user provides a code path or asks to review Ansible code\n(triggered by `$ARGUMENTS` containing a file/directory path):\n\n1. Read the Ansible code to review\n2. Identify which documentation topics are relevant based on the\n   directives, modules, and patterns used in the code\n3. Search for and fetch the relevant documentation (Steps 1-3 above)\n4. Review the code against the official documentation:\n   - Flag usage that contradicts documentation\n   - Flag deprecated syntax with migration guidance from porting guides\n   - Flag modules used incorrectly (wrong parameters, missing required\n     params)\n   - Suggest documented alternatives where applicable\n5. **Cite sources** for every finding — reference the doc URL and\n   section that supports the finding\n6.
