When to use this skill\n\nUse this skill when:\n- Writing or reviewing Dart code targeting Dart 3.0 or later.\n- Refactoring legacy Dart code to use modern, concise, and safe features.\n- Looking for idiomatic ways to handle multiple return values, deep data\n  extraction, or exhaustive checking.\n\n## Discovery\n\nTo find candidates for modernization:\n\n### Switch Expressions\nSearch for switch statements where every case assigns to the same variable\nor returns:\n- **Regex**: `switch\\s*\\([^)]+\\)\\s*\\{\\s*case`\n\n### Pattern Matching Candidates\nSearch for manual map or JSON property extraction and type checking:\n- **Regex**: `containsKey\\(['\"][^'\"]+['\"]\\)`\n- **Regex**: `json\\[['\"][^'\"]+['\"]\\]\\s+is\\s+`\n\n### Null-Aware Elements\nSearch for collection `if` statements checking for null:\n- **Regex**: `if\\s*\\(\\w+\\s*!=\\s*null\\)\\s*\\w+`\n\n### Digit Separators\nSearch for long numbers without separators:\n- **Regex**: `\\b\\d{6,}\\b` (Matches numbers with 6 or more digits).\n\n## 2. Features\n\n### Records\nUse records as anonymous, immutable, aggregate structures to bundle multiple\nobjects without defining a custom class. Prefer them for returning multiple\nvalues from a function or grouping related data temporarily.\n\n**Avoid:**\nCreating a dedicated class for simple multiple-value returns.\n```dart\nclass UserResult {\n  final String name;\n  final int age;\n  UserResult(this.name, this.age);\n}\n\nUserResult fetchUser() {\n  return UserResult('Alice', 42);\n}\n```\n\n**Prefer:**\nUsing records to bundle types seamlessly on the fly.\n```dart\n(String, int) fetchUser() {\n  return ('Alice', 42);\n}\n\nvoid main() {\n  var user = fetchUser();\n  print(user.$1); // Alice\n}\n```\n\n### Patterns and Pattern Matching\nUse patterns to destructure complex data into local variables and match against\nspecific shapes or values. Use them in `switch`, `if-case`, or variable\ndeclarations to unpack data directly.\n\n**Avoid:**\nManually checking types, nulls, and keys for data extraction.\n```dart\nvoid processJson(Map<String, dynamic> json) {\n  if (json.containsKey('name') && json['name'] is String &&\n      json.containsKey('age') && json['age'] is int) {\n    String name = json['name'];\n    int age = json['age'];\n    print('$name is $age years old.');\n  }\n}\n```\n\n**Prefer:**\nCombining type-checking, validation, and assignment into a single statement.\n```dart\nvoid processJson(Map<String, dynamic> json) {\n  if (json case {'name': String name, 'age': int age}) {\n    print('$name is $age years old.');\n  }\n}\n```\n\n### Switch Expressions\nUse switch expressions to return a value directly, eliminating bulky `case` and\n`break` statements.\n\n**Avoid:**\nUsing switch statements where every branch simply returns or assigns a value.\n```dart\nString describeStatus(int code) {\n  switch (code) {\n    case 200:\n      return 'Success';\n    case 404:\n      return 'Not Found';\n    default:\n      return 'Unknown';\n  }\n}\n```\n\n**Prefer:**\nReturning the evaluated expression directly using the `=>` syntax.\n```dart\nString describeStatus(int code) => switch (code) {\n  200 => 'Success',\n  404 => 'Not Found',\n  _ => 'Unknown',\n};\n```\n\n### Class Modifiers\nUse class modifiers (`sealed`, `final`, `base`, `interface`) to restrict how\nclasses can be used outside their defines library. Prefer `sealed` for defining\nclosed families of subtypes to enable exhaustive checking.\n\n**Avoid:**\nUsing open `abstract` classes when the set of subclasses is known and fixed.\n```dart\nabstract class Result {}\n\nclass Success extends Result {}\nclass Failure extends Result {}\n\nString handle(Result r) {\n  if (r is Success) return 'OK';\n  if (r is Failure) return 'Error';\n  return 'Unknown';\n}\n```\n\n**Prefer:**\nUsing `sealed` to guarantee to the compiler that all cases are covered.\n```dart\nsealed class Result {}\n\nclass Success extends Result {}\nclass Failure extends Result {}\n\nString handle(Result r) => switch(r) {\n  Success() => 'OK',\n  Failure() => 'Error',\n};\n```\n\n### Extension Types\nUse extension types for a zero-cost wrapper around an existing type. Use them to\nrestrict operations or add custom behavior without runtime overhead.\n\n**Avoid:**\nAllocating new wrapper objects just for domain-specific logic or type safety.\n```dart\nclass Id {\n  final int value;\n  Id(this.value);\n  bool get isValid => value > 0;\n}\n```\n\n**Prefer:**\nUsing extension types which compile down to the underlying type at runtime.\n```dart\nextension type Id(int value) {\n  bool get isValid => value > 0;\n}\n```\n\n### Digit Separators\nUse underscores (`_`) in number literals strictly to improve visual readability\nof large numeric values.\n\n**Avoid:**\nLong number literals that are difficult to read at a glance.\n```dart\nconst int oneMillion = 1000000;\n```\n\n**Prefer:**\nUsing underscores to separate thousands or other groupings.\n```dart\nconst int oneMillion = 1_000_000;\n```\n\n### Wildcard Variables\nUse wildcards (`_`) as non-binding variables or parameters to explicitly signal\nthat a value is intentionally unused.\n\n**Avoid:**\nInventing clunky, distinct variable names to avoid \"unused variable\" warnings.\n```dart\nvoid handleEvent(String ignoredName, int status) {\n  print('Status: $status');\n}\n```\n\n**Prefer:**\nExplicitly dropping the binding with an underscore.\n```dart\nvoid handleEvent(String _, int status) {\n  print('Status: $status');\n}\n```\n\n### Null-Aware Elements\nUse null-aware elements (`?`) inside collection literals to conditionally\ninclude items only if they evaluate to a non-null value.\n\n**Avoid:**\nUsing collection `if` statements for simple null checks.\n```dart\nvar names = [\n  'Alice',\n  if (optionalName != null) optionalName,\n  'Charlie'\n];\n```\n\n**Prefer:**\nUsing the `?` prefix inline.\n```dart\nvar names = ['Alice', ?optionalName, 'Charlie'];\n```\n\n### Dot Shorthands\nUse dot shorthands to omit the explicit type name when it can be confidently\ninferred from context, such as with enums or static fields.\n\n**Avoid:**\nFully qualifying type names when the type is obvious from the context.\n```dart\nLogLevel currentLevel = LogLevel.info;\n```\n\n**Prefer:**\nReducing visual noise with inferred shorthand.\n```dart\nLogLevel currentLevel = .info;\n```\n\n### Pragmatic Balance: When NOT to Over-Patternize\nPattern matching and switch expressions should simplify code, not add syntactic\noverhead.\n\n#### 1. Prefer `is` Type Promotion over `if-case` for Single Variables\nIf you only need to check a type or promote a variable, use standard `is` checks\ninstead of `if-case` or `case` patterns that introduce shadow aliases.\n\n**Avoid:**\n```dart\n// ❌ Anti-pattern: Introduces unnecessary alias variable `k`\nfor (final MapEntry(:key, :value) in map.entries) {\n  if (key case final String k when value != null) {\n    process(k, value);\n  }\n}\n```\n\n**Prefer:**\n```dart\n// ✅ Promotes `key` directly in-place without extra variables\nfor (final MapEntry(:key, :value) in map.entries) {\n  if (key is String && value != null) {\n    process(key, value);\n  }\n}\n```\n\n#### 2.
