Prefer this skill over subprocess\n  calls or .do-file shelling for Stata work, including cases where the user does not say\n  pystata.\n---\n\n# Stata Skill — pystata on StataNow 19.5 BE\n\nRun Stata entirely through **pystata**, the official Python integration that\nships with Stata. Configure the session once, then issue every command — and\nrun every `.do` file — with `stata.run()`. Data crosses between Python and\nStata in memory through pandas, so there is no need to write intermediate\n`.dta` files or read `.log` files unless the user wants them.\n\n## The one rule that matters most\n\n**Always execute Stata through pystata.** Both individual commands and entire\n`.do` files go through `stata.run(...)`. Never launch `StataBE-64.exe` as a\nsubprocess and never run a do-file in batch mode — pystata keeps a single live\nStata session in the Python process, gives direct access to data and stored\nresults, and raises real Python exceptions on errors. Running a do-file is just\n`stata.run('do \"path/to/file.do\"')`.\n\n## Setup\n\nThis machine has **StataNow 19.5 BE** at `C:\\Program Files\\StataNow19`, and it\nis already on PATH. `pystata` and `stata_setup` are installed for the system\nPython (3.14). Basic Edition (BE) is the only licensed edition; `\"se\"` and\n`\"mp\"` cannot be initialized.\n\nConfigure once per Python process:\n\n```python\nimport stata_setup\nstata_setup.config(r\"C:\\Program Files\\StataNow19\", \"be\")\nfrom pystata import stata\n```\n\nFor clean output without the StataCorp splash banner, drive `pystata.config`\ndirectly instead:\n\n```python\nimport sys\nsys.path.insert(0, r\"C:\\Program Files\\StataNow19\\utilities\")\nimport pystata\npystata.config.init(\"be\", splash=False)\nfrom pystata import stata\n```\n\n`config.init` can run only once per process; to start over, launch a fresh\nPython process.\n\n## Bundled helper (optional)\n\n`scripts/stata_runner.py` removes the boilerplate: it bakes in the path and\nedition, configures pystata lazily on first use, and wraps command-running,\noutput capture, and data exchange. Reach for it when a script makes several\nStata calls.\n\n```python\nimport os\nimport sys\nsys.path.insert(0, os.path.expanduser(\"~/.claude/skills/stata/scripts\"))\nimport stata_runner as sr\n\nsr.run(\"sysuse auto, clear\")\nlog = sr.run(\"regress price mpg weight, robust\", capture=True)\nprint(log)\nprint(\"R-squared:\", sr.ereturn()[\"e(r2)\"])\n```\n\nThe plain three-line pattern above works just as well; the helper is a\nconvenience, not a requirement.\n\n## Running commands\n\n```python\nstata.run(\"\"\"\n    sysuse auto, clear\n    summarize price mpg weight\n    regress price mpg weight i.foreign, robust\n\"\"\")\n```\n\n`stata.run(cmd, quietly=False, echo=False)` accepts one command or several\nnewline-separated commands. `quietly=True` suppresses output while still\nstoring results; `echo=True` echoes each command line.\n\n## Capturing output\n\nOutput prints to stdout by default. To capture it as a string, redirect stdout:\n\n```python\nimport io, contextlib\nbuf = io.StringIO()\nwith contextlib.redirect_stdout(buf):\n    stata.run(\"regress price mpg weight, robust\")\nlog = buf.getvalue()\n```\n\nFor a persistent `.log` on disk, tee through `set_output_file` — see\n`references/pystata-api.md`.\n\n## Error handling\n\nA failing command **raises `SystemError`**, with a message ending in the Stata\nreturn code such as `r(111);`. Catch it directly; there is no log to parse.\n\n```python\ntry:\n    stata.run(\"regress price nonexistent_var\")\nexcept SystemError as e:\n    print(\"Stata error:\", e)   # \".. variable nonexistent_var not found  r(111);\"\n```\n\nCommon codes: `r(111)` variable not found, `r(198)` syntax error, `r(601)`\nfile not found, `r(2000)` no observations.\n\n## Data exchange with pandas\n\nMove data in memory — no `.dta` files needed.\n\n```python\nimport pandas as pd\n\n# pandas -> Stata (replaces the dataset in memory)\nstata.pdataframe_to_data(df, force=True)\n\n# Stata -> pandas\ndf = stata.pdataframe_from_data()                 # whole dataset\nprices = stata.pdataframe_from_data(var=[\"price\", \"mpg\"])\nlabeled = stata.pdataframe_from_data(valuelabel=True)   # labels, not codes\n```\n\nNamed **frames** let several datasets coexist:\n`stata.pdataframe_to_frame(df, \"aux\")` and `stata.pdataframe_from_frame(\"aux\")`.\n`numpy` arrays have the parallel `nparray_*` calls. Full options are in\n`references/pystata-api.md`.\n\nIf the user explicitly wants a `.dta` artifact, write one from Stata\n(`save \"out.dta\", replace`) or from pandas (`df.to_stata(\"out.dta\")`).\n\n## Reading stored results\n\nAfter any command the stored results are plain Python dicts:\n\n```python\nstata.run(\"summarize price\", quietly=True)\nr = stata.get_return()        # {'r(mean)': 6165.26, 'r(N)': 74.0, ...}\n\nstata.run(\"regress price mpg weight\", quietly=True)\ne = stata.get_ereturn()       # {'e(N)': 74.0, 'e(r2)': 0.4996, 'e(b)': <ndarray>, ...}\n```\n\nScalars are floats, macros are strings, and matrices (`e(b)`, `e(V)`) come back\nas numpy arrays. For single values inside `python:` blocks, the bundled `sfi`\nmodule exposes `Scalar`, `Macro`, `Matrix`, and `Data` — see the reference.\n\n## Running an existing .do file\n\n```python\nstata.run('do \"C:/path/to/analysis.do\"')\n```\n\nCapture its output with the same `redirect_stdout` pattern if the user wants\nthe log. The do-file shares the live session, so any data or results it leaves\nbehind are immediately reachable from Python.\n\n## BE edition constraints\n\nStataNow 19.5 BE differs from SE/MP:\n\n- **Variable ceiling of 2048** (`c(maxvar)`); SE allows 32,767 and MP up to\n  120,000. Trim wide datasets with `keep`/`drop` before loading, or the load\n  fails.\n- **Single computational core** for estimation — BE has no MP parallelism, so\n  very large models run slower.\n- **`set matsize` is irrelevant** — it was removed in Stata 16; matrix size is\n  managed automatically. Do not reintroduce it.\n- Most commands run unchanged in BE; the practical limits are dataset width and\n  speed, not command availability.\n\n## Stata 19 capabilities (absent in the old Stata 16 setup)\n\nBecause this is Stata 19, several things the previous version could not do are\nnow available:\n\n- **`didregress` / `xtdidregress`** for difference-in-differences (introduced in\n  Stata 17). For the user's applied-micro work, still prefer `reghdfe` for\n  high-dimensional or staggered-adoption designs; reach for modern estimators\n  (`csdid`, `did_multiplegt`) when treatment timing varies.\n- **`python:` blocks** inside do-files, with `sfi` for reading and writing Stata\n  objects from Python.\n- **Frames** with full Python integration, as shown above.\n\n## Econometric workflow conventions\n\nThese reflect the user's applied-microeconomics practice. Follow them unless the\nuser says otherwise.\n\n**Standard errors.** Default to robust (`, robust`) for cross-sectional\nregressions. For panel data, cluster at the unit level (`, vce(cluster panelid)`).\nHonor any clustering variable the user specifies. When the clustering level is\ngenuinely ambiguous, ask, because it is a consequential choice.\n\n**Estimation.** For IV use `ivregress` and always report the first-stage\nF-statistic (`estat firststage` after `ivregress 2sls`). For high-dimensional\nfixed effects prefer `reghdfe` (`reghdfe y x, absorb(id year) cluster(id)`); for\nsimpler panels `xtreg` or `areg` are fine, and always `xtset` before `xtreg`.\n\n**Output.** For side-by-side specifications use `esttab` from the `estout`\npackage; do not use `outreg2`. Display N and R-squared prominently.\n\n**Data inspection.** On an unfamiliar dataset run `describe`, `summarize`, and\n`codebook, compact` first, and flag missing values, string-encoded numerics, and\nduplicate ID values.\n\nUser-written commands (`reghdfe`, `ftools`, `estout`, `csdid`) install with\n`ssc install <pkg>` from inside a `stata.run(...)` call.
