{"slug":"kbwen-frontend-patterns","name":"frontend-patterns","description":"Apply frontend conventions when components, pages, forms, or client state change.","long_description":"---\nname: frontend-patterns\ndescription: Apply frontend conventions when components, pages, forms, or client state change.\n---\n\n<!-- This is a SCAFFOLD skill -->\n\n# Frontend Patterns\n\n## When to Apply\n\n- **Classification**: feature, architecture-change (if touching UI)\n- **Phase**: /implement (component design & build), /review (pattern compliance), /test (UI state coverage)\n- **Trigger**: Task involves creating or modifying UI components, pages, routes, or client-side state\n\n## Conventions\n\n> **Customize after /app-init**: Replace these generic conventions with your project's ADR and framework-specific patterns.\n\n### Component Structure\n- One component per file\n- Component file name matches export name (PascalCase)\n- Co-locate component-specific styles, tests, and types\n- Separate page-level components from reusable UI components\n\n### Suggested Directory Pattern\n```\nsrc/\n├── components/        # Reusable UI components (Button, Modal, Card)\n│   └── <Name>/\n│       ├── <Name>.tsx\n│       ├── <Name>.test.tsx\n│       └── index.ts\n├── pages/             # Page-level components (route targets)\n│   └── <PageName>/\n│       ├── <PageName>.tsx\n│       ├── components/ # Page-specific components (not reusable)\n│       └── hooks/      # Page-specific hooks\n├── hooks/             # Shared custom hooks\n├── services/          # API client functions\n├── stores/            # State management (if applicable)\n├── types/             # Shared TypeScript types\n└── utils/             # Pure utility functions\n```\n\n### State Management Principles\n- **Local state first**: useState/useReducer for component-specific state\n- **Lift state up** only when sibling components need it\n- **Global state** (store) only for truly app-wide state: auth, theme, user preferences\n- **Server state** (API data) managed by data-fetching library (React Query, SWR, etc.) — NOT in global store\n- Never duplicate server state in client store\n\n### Data Fetching\n- Centralize API calls in `services/` directory\n- Use data-fetching hooks (React Query, SWR, or equivalent) instead of raw fetch/axios in components\n- Handle loading, error, and empty states for every data-dependent component\n- Implement optimistic updates for better UX where appropriate\n\n### Form Handling\n- Use a form library for complex forms (React Hook Form, Formik, or equivalent)\n- Validate on client AND server (client validation is UX, server validation is security)\n- Show inline errors next to fields, not just at form top\n- Disable submit button during submission (prevent double-submit)\n\n### Error Handling\n- Global error boundary for unexpected crashes\n- Per-component error handling for expected failures (API errors)\n- User-friendly error messages (never show raw error objects)\n- Retry mechanism for transient failures (network errors)\n\n## Checklist\n\nDuring /implement:\n- [ ] Every data-dependent component handles: loading, error, empty, and success states\n- [ ] No business logic in components (extract to hooks or services)\n- [ ] No hardcoded strings (use constants or i18n keys)\n- [ ] Accessible: semantic HTML, aria labels on interactive elements, keyboard navigation\n- [ ] Responsive: works on mobile viewport (unless spec explicitly excludes mobile)\n- [ ] No direct API calls in components (use service layer)\n\nDuring /review:\n- [ ] No prop drilling deeper than 2 levels (use context or composition)\n- [ ] No unnecessary re-renders (check memo/callback usage)\n- [ ] No sensitive data stored in localStorage/client state\n- [ ] Route guards for authenticated pages\n- [ ] Loading indicators for async operations\n\n## Heading-Scoped Read Note\n\nFor phase-entry loading, read only:\n- `When to Apply`\n- `Checklist`\n\nLoad `Conventions`, `Anti-Patterns`, and `References` on full read or cache miss only.\n\n## Anti-Patterns\n\n- **God component**: Component with 300+ lines doing everything. Split into smaller components.\n- **Prop drilling**: Passing props through 3+ levels of components.
