The goal is to create a felt need to understand.\n\nUse this skill to help the user open a topic with curiosity, cognitive tension, relevance, and participant commitment before explanation arrives.\n\n## Core Principle\n\nDo not start with the explanation.\n\nStart by designing the moment thinking begins.\n\nThe explanation should arrive after the participant has already:\n\n1. Noticed a gap\n2. Formed a theory, prediction, position, or question\n3. Put some thinking on the line\n4. Felt a reason to care about the explanation\n\n## Required Input\n\nThe user may provide any of the following:\n\n- Workshop topic\n- Workshop title\n- Learning objective\n- Explanation or teaching notes\n- Audience\n- Duration\n- Desired outcome\n- Existing opening activity\n- Slides, outline, or agenda\n\nThe one thing required is enough material to identify a core concept. That can come from any input above: a topic, title, learning objective, explanation or teaching notes, slides, outline, or an existing opening activity. Extract the teaching core from whatever the user supplies — a review or improvement request that provides only teaching notes or an objective is enough to proceed. Ask a follow-up only when nothing provided is sufficient to identify a core concept. For any other missing input (audience, duration, desired outcome), do not stall: infer a reasonable value and label it as an assumption.\n\n## Method\n\n### Step 1: Extract the Teaching Core\n\nFrom the user's topic and explanation, identify:\n\n- The audience, and their level or context (if not given, assume one and label it as an assumption)\n- The core concept\n- The thing participants usually misunderstand\n- The belief, habit, assumption, or mental model the workshop is trying to change\n- The decision, behavior, or capability participants should leave with\n- The explanation that should not arrive too early\n\nWrite this as:\n\n```text\nAudience:\nCore concept:\nParticipants may currently think:\nThe workshop needs them to understand:\nThe explanation should land after they have wondered:\n```\n\n### Step 2: Choose the Thinking Before Choosing the Question\n\nBefore generating questions, decide what kind of thinking the workshop needs first.\n\nUse this mapping:\n\n| If participants need to…                          | Use this move         | It creates |\n| ------------------------------------------------- | --------------------- | ---------- |\n| Commit before they know the answer                | Prediction            | Ownership  |\n| Explain incomplete information                    | Mystery               | A gap      |\n| Reconsider a belief                               | Contradiction         | Conflict   |\n| Look closely before interpretation                | Close Observation     | Attention  |\n| Weigh two imperfect options                       | Dilemma and Decision  | Reasoning  |\n| Find a pattern or rule                            | Puzzle                | Search     |\n| Recognize the concept in their own work or life   | Real-Life Connection  | Relevance  |\n| Reason backward from an outcome                   | Cause and Effect      | Causality  |\n\nDefault to Real-Life Connection if the best move is unclear.\n\nFor a concrete stimulus-and-question phrasing for each of the eight moves, a fully worked end-to-end frame, and facilitator language for protecting wrong answers, load [curiosity-by-design.md](./references/curiosity-by-design.md).\n\n### Step 3: Generate Question Sets\n\nProduce questions in these categories.\n\n#### A. Opening Spark Questions\n\nCreate 3 to 5 questions that can open the workshop before explanation.\n\nEach question must:\n\n- Create a gap, tension, decision, prediction, or puzzle\n- Be answerable before the participant knows the formal content\n- Avoid asking for definitions\n- Avoid asking \"what do you know about…\"\n- Avoid sounding like a quiz unless prediction is intentional\n- Be short enough to say out loud\n\n#### B. Commitment Questions\n\nCreate 2 to 4 questions that require participants to commit to an answer, position, prediction, or explanation.\n\nExamples:\n\n- \"Which option would you choose, and why?\"\n- \"What do you think is happening here?\"\n- \"What would you expect to happen next?\"\n- \"Which of these is most likely to fail first?\"\n- \"What rule do you think explains this pattern?\"\n\n#### C. Hold Questions\n\nCreate 2 to 4 questions the facilitator can use before revealing the explanation.\n\nThese should keep uncertainty alive without frustrating participants.\n\nExamples:\n\n- \"What makes you say that?\"\n- \"What would change your mind?\"\n- \"What evidence would you want before deciding?\"\n- \"Where might your first answer break?\"\n- \"Who has a different theory?\"\n\n#### D. Teaching Bridge Questions\n\nCreate 2 to 4 questions that transition from participant thinking into the explanation.\n\nExamples:\n\n- \"What would we need to know to resolve this?\"\n- \"What principle would explain both examples?\"\n- \"What assumption is doing the most work here?\"\n- \"What pattern are we now ready to name?\"\n- \"What does this make the explanation responsible for answering?\"\n\n#### E. Is there a metal here you think will NOT stick?\n\n## Commitment Questions (2 to 4)\n1. Which objects did you circle, and which one are you least sure about?\n2. What rule are you using to decide?\n\n## Hold Questions (2 to 4)\n1. Who circled the coin? Who didn't? What made you decide?\n2. What result would prove your rule wrong?\n\n## Teaching Bridge Questions (2 to 4)\n1. We tested it: the paperclip and safety pin stuck, the coin did not. What do the ones that stuck share that the coin does not?\n2. What would the explanation have to account for to resolve this?\n\n## Return Questions (3 to 5)\n1. You predicted the coin would stick. It didn't. What was your rule before?\n2. What is your rule now?\n3. Where else would your old rule have failed?\n\n## Alternative Frames\n\n### Option 1\nMove: Contradiction\nBest when: participants are sure every metal is magnetic.\nOpening question: A steel paperclip and a copper coin are both metal. The magnet grabs one and ignores the other. Why?\nParticipant commitment: write which metal the magnet grabs, and why.\nWhat to hold back: do not name which metals are magnetic, or the word ferromagnetic.\nHow to return: You believed every metal is magnetic. Which metals actually were? What is your rule now?\n\n### Option 2\nMove: Real-Life Connection\nBest when: you want relevance before the science.\nOpening question: Where at home does something stick to metal on its own, and where does it refuse to? Why those spots and not others?\nParticipant commitment: name one place a magnet sticks and one metal place it does not.\nWhat to hold back: do not explain which materials are magnetic yet.\nHow to return: You named the fridge door but not the copper pipe. What made the difference?\n\n## Facilitator Notes\n- Best opening question: \"Which of these will the magnet pick up?\" with the objects in their hands.\n- What not to explain too early: that only some metals (iron, steel) are magnetic, not metal in general.\n- Likely participant first answers: \"all the metal ones,\" so the coin gets circled.\n- How to protect wrong answers: \"That makes complete sense. Most metals feel like they should stick.
