Native image tools own ordinary generation when already available.\n---\n\n# Codex Image Generation\n\nDelegate raster image generation and editing to Codex's built-in `$imagegen`\ncapability, then return a verified workspace artifact to the leader harness.\n\n**Core insight:** instrument Codex, not the desktop window. When the configured `codex exec` environment exposes image generation, use it headlessly and hand off the resulting artifact through the shared filesystem. Authentication alone does not establish tool availability.\n\nAs of Jul 2026, this path is verified with `codex-cli 0.144.6`. CLI and tool\navailability are volatile; the installed CLI and a live invocation outrank this\nsnapshot.\n\n## Select the Execution Route\n\n| Host state | Route |\n| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |\n| Codex with a callable built-in image-generation tool | Invoke `$imagegen` directly. Never launch a child Codex from Codex. |\n| Claude Code, Pi, Cursor, or another shell-capable harness with `codex` installed | Use `codex exec`. This is the default delegation path. |\n| The leader already has Codex MCP tools named `codex` and `codex-reply` | Use MCP when iterative art direction benefits from a persistent thread. |\n| No native tool, Codex CLI, or configured Codex MCP server | Stop with the missing prerequisite and the exact error. Do not substitute another generator. |\n\nRun `codex --version` before the first delegated call. Respect the user's Codex\nconfiguration; never set `--model`, `-m`, or `-c model=`. Authentication,\nentitlements, workspace policy, and image-generation availability belong to the\ninstalled Codex environment.\n\nUse the user's normal Codex session configuration. This skill bundles no Codex\nagent profile and requires no model or reasoning override.\n\nDo not start or automate the ChatGPT desktop app. Do not install an MCP server,\nchange Claude configuration, or switch to API billing unless the user asks.\n\n## Establish the Artifact Contract\n\nResolve these inputs before launching Codex:\n\n| Input | Rule |\n| -------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |\n| Intent | Classify as new generation, edit, refinement, or variants. |\n| Destination | Honor the user's path. Otherwise follow the repo's existing asset layout, or use `assets/generated/.png` when no convention exists. |\n| Existing destination | Create a sibling version such as `hero-v2.png`; overwrite only when explicitly requested. |\n| Input images | Label every image as edit target, content reference, style reference, or compositing input. |\n| Exact text | Quote verbatim, preserve capitalization, and forbid any other text unless requested. |\n| Invariants | For edits, state what may change and what must remain unchanged. |\n| Avoid list | Carry the user's negative constraints without adding invented brand, narrative, or stylistic requirements. |\n\nResolve relative paths against the leader's current workspace. For a project asset with no user-specified destination, keep the final\nasset inside that workspace. Honor explicit destinations outside it when authorized. Keep the child's output in the workspace, then have the parent copy that exact verified artifact to the authorized external destination and verify the copy. A workspace-write child is not assumed to have external write access. Built-in generation may initially save under\n`$CODEX_HOME`; that location is staging, not a valid final destination for a\nproject asset.\n\n## Delegate with `codex exec`\n\nUse a single-quoted heredoc so prompts containing backticks, `$()`, quotes, or\nshell metacharacters remain data. Before executing, confirm `IMAGEGEN_BRIEF`\ndoes not appear as an exact standalone line in inserted content; if it does,\nchoose a different quoted delimiter and update both marker lines. Inside a project repo, omit the flag and keep the trust check.\n\nFor multiple input images, add one `-i` argument per file and preserve the same\nordering in the brief. Use absolute paths when the leader and Codex might resolve\nworking directories differently.\n\nDo not launch a duplicate while `codex exec` is alive. Distinct assets need\ndistinct prompts; otherwise one failure makes the receipt ambiguous and visual\nconstraints bleed between outputs.\n\n### Parallel multi-image generation\n\nInspect the current tool's batch and reference-image semantics. When assets are independent and the host permits delegation, fan out jobs with separate prompts and receipts. A tool's supported batch output may also be appropriate; verify each requested asset individually.\n\nBefore launch, assign every job a deterministic destination such as\n`concept-01.png`, `concept-02.png`, and `concept-03.png`. Give each process its\nown prompt and receipt. Shared reference images may be read by every job; output\npaths and temporary receipt paths must never collide.\n\nUse the leader's native parallel tool dispatch when available. Do not hardcode\nan arbitrary concurrency cap into the skill; honor the harness and account\ncapacity already in force. If the host cannot dispatch concurrently, preserve\nthe same isolated job shape and run it sequentially.\n\nTrack completion as `N/total`. On partial failure, keep and report successful\nassets, then retry only failed jobs after diagnosing their exact errors. Add no text or watermark.\n```\n\nFor a refinement, change one dimension at a time. \"Keep everything else\nunchanged\" is the part that does the work, not decoration.\n\n## Verify the Handoff\n\nCodex's receipt is a claim until the leader verifies the filesystem artifact.\n\n1. Confirm every reported final path exists at the agreed destination, resolving symlinks when checking workspace containment.\n2. Confirm each file is non-empty and `file ` identifies the requested\n raster format.\n3. Confirm no requested deliverable exists only in a temporary generation directory.\n4. Inspect the asset in the leader harness when it has image-viewing support.\n Otherwise report that visual verification was performed by delegated Codex,\n not by the leader.\n5. Present the image through the host's native image-return mechanism when available, and link the project artifact. Keep the full prompt and technical receipt for the parent harness; show details to the user when requested or needed to explain a limitation.\n\n`codex exec` may echo the final receipt twice in one output stream, once as\nstreamed agent output and once as the final message. Duplicate receipt text is\none run, not two; count generations by process invocations.\n\nIf Codex generated successfully but failed to move the selected image, use the\nexact staging path from its receipt and copy it non-destructively into the\nworkspace.
