Two libraries, both preinstalled — pick by task:\nRefer to the workbook exactly as the Generated artifacts list names it. Use\n`exec` only for a genuinely shell-only command; never put this source in\n`python -c` or a heredoc.\n\n- **pandas** — bulk tabular read/write/analysis. Use for \"load this sheet,\n  compute, dump a table\". Drops all formatting and formulas.\n- **openpyxl** — cells, formulas, styles, charts, merged cells, multi-sheet,\n  number formats. Use whenever formatting, formulas, or fidelity matter.\n\n## THE critical gotcha: openpyxl writes formulas but never computes them\n\n`ws[\"B10\"] = \"=SUM(B2:B9)\"` stores the formula *string*. openpyxl has no formula\nengine — the cached value stays empty (or stale, on an edited file). So:\n\n- A workbook you create/edit with openpyxl opens fine in Excel/LibreOffice (they\n  recompute on open), but its cached values are wrong until then.\n- Anything reading cached values first — `data_only=True`, another\n  pandas/openpyxl pass, or a downstream tool — sees blanks/stale data.\n\nPick by what the deliverable needs:\n\n1. **Static numbers (most common).** If the user just needs correct values and\n   the sheet need not stay live, compute in Python and write the **number**, not\n   a formula string: `ws[\"B10\"] = sum(c.value for c in ws[\"B2:B9\"][0])`. Correct\n   immediately, no recalc needed.\n2. **Live model** (formulas that recompute on the user's later edits). Write real\n   formulas, and reference cells not literals (`=B5*(1+$B$6)`, not `=B5*1.05`).\n   openpyxl can't set the cached value too, so either recalc with LibreOffice if\n   present (gate it — often absent):\n   ```bash\n   command -v soffice >/dev/null && \\\n     soffice --headless --convert-to xlsx --outdir /tmp out.xlsx \\\n       >/dev/null 2>&1 && cp /tmp/out.xlsx out.xlsx\n   ```\n   `--convert-to xlsx` reopens and recalculates, repopulating cached values. If\n   `soffice` is missing, say so and warn the user the formulas populate when they\n   open the file in Excel — never assume soffice exists.\n\n## Reading\n\n```python\nimport pandas as pd\n\ndf = pd.read_excel(\"in.xlsx\")  # first sheet\nsheets = pd.read_excel(\"in.xlsx\", sheet_name=None)  # dict of all sheets\ndf = pd.read_excel(\"in.xlsx\", dtype={\"id\": str})  # stop id->float coercion\n```\n\nTo read **computed results** of formulas (not the formula text), use openpyxl\nwith `data_only=True` — returns the value Excel last cached:\n\n```python\nfrom openpyxl import load_workbook\n\nwb = load_workbook(\"in.xlsx\", data_only=True)\nval = wb[\"Sheet1\"][\"B10\"].value  # None if Excel never opened/saved the file\n```\n\nGotcha: never `save()` a workbook loaded with `data_only=True` — that discards\nevery formula permanently (verified: the cell becomes `None`). Do NOT round-trip through pandas to preserve formatting (pandas\nrewrites the whole sheet, losing styles).\n\n```python\nfrom openpyxl import load_workbook\n\nwb = load_workbook(\"in.xlsx\")  # keep formulas (data_only=False)\nws = wb[\"Sheet1\"]\nws[\"C2\"] = \"Updated\"\nwb.save(\"in.xlsx\")\n```\n\nMatch the file's existing conventions (font, number formats, colors) rather than\nimposing new ones — an established template wins over any default.\n\nWhen inserting/deleting rows or columns (`ws.insert_rows`, `ws.delete_cols`),\nopenpyxl does **not** rewrite formulas that reference shifted cells. Re-point\naffected formulas yourself, or avoid structural shifts in formula-heavy sheets.\n\n## Charts\n\n```python\nfrom openpyxl.chart import BarChart, Reference\n\nch = BarChart()\nch.title = \"Sales\"\ndata = Reference(ws, min_col=2, min_row=1, max_row=3)  # include header for title\ncats = Reference(ws, min_col=1, min_row=2, max_row=3)\nch.add_data(data, titles_from_data=True)\nch.set_categories(cats)\nws.add_chart(ch, \"E2\")\n```\nLineChart / PieChart / ScatterChart follow the same shape.\n\n## Verifying you produced clean output\n\nAfter writing, reload and scan for error strings — these mean broken formulas\nthat recalc surfaced (`#REF!` bad reference, `#DIV/0!` zero denominator,\n`#VALUE!` type mismatch, `#NAME?` unknown function, `#N/A`):\n\n```python\nfrom openpyxl import load_workbook\n\nwb = load_workbook(\"out.xlsx\", data_only=True)\nerrs = [\n    f\"{s}!{c.coordinate}={c.value}\"\n    for s in wb.sheetnames\n    for row in wb[s].iter_rows()\n    for c in row\n    if isinstance(c.value, str) and c.value.startswith(\"#\")\n]\nprint(errs or \"clean\")\n```\nThis only catches errors in *cached* values. If you wrote formulas and couldn't\nrecalc (no soffice), cached values are blank, so the check is meaningful only\nafter a recalc or after Excel opens the file. Writing computed numbers (option 1)\nsidesteps this.\n\n## CSV / TSV\n\n```python\ndf = pd.read_csv(\"in.csv\")  # sep=\"\\t\" for TSV\ndf.to_csv(\"out.csv\", index=False)\n```\nFor messy input (junk rows, header not on row 1, ragged columns): inspect raw\nlines first, then `pd.read_csv(..., skiprows=, header=, usecols=, on_bad_lines=\"skip\")`.\n\n## Raw OOXML (rarely needed)\n\nopenpyxl covers essentially all xlsx features; reach for raw XML only for the\nnarrow cases it can't express (e.g. preserving an exotic part it drops on\nre-save). An .xlsx is a ZIP: `xl/workbook.xml`, `xl/worksheets/sheet1.xml`,\n`xl/sharedStrings.xml`, plus `[Content_Types].xml` and `_rels/`. Unzip with\nstdlib `zipfile`, edit the part, re-zip — keep `[Content_Types].xml` and every\n`.rels` consistent, keep IDs unique, and don't pretty-print into value-bearing\ntext nodes.
