They exist for exactly one job: handing\nsecrets — tokens, generated passwords, short-lived certificates, decrypted\nvalues — to the parts of a configuration that need them, without writing\nthem to disk. Any data source that returns a sensitive value is a candidate\nto be (or to also exist as) an ephemeral resource.\n\nOfficial docs: [Ephemeral Resources](https://developer.hashicorp.com/terraform/plugin/framework/ephemeral-resources).\n\n## When to Use One\n\n| Situation | Use |\n|---|---|\n| Read-only lookup of non-sensitive data | Data source |\n| Value is sensitive and only needed at apply time (DB password for a provider block, token for a write-only attribute) | Ephemeral resource |\n| Sensitive value that downstream *managed resources* must store (e.g. as an attribute) | Regular resource/data source — but pair with write-only attributes where possible |\n| Credential that expires mid-operation (STS-style tokens, short-TTL leases) | Ephemeral resource with `Renew` |\n\nEphemeral results can be used in provider configuration, write-only\nattributes, provisioner configuration, and other ephemeral contexts — but\nnot in regular attributes, because those persist to state.\n\n## Lifecycle\n\nTerraform calls up to three methods per operation:\n\n- **`Open`** (required) — fetch or create the value; runs during plan\n  and/or apply whenever the result is needed. There is no state to refresh\n  and nothing to import.\n- **`Renew`** (optional) — called when the wall clock passes the\n  `RenewAt` returned by `Open`/`Renew`, for values that expire while\n  Terraform is still running. Minimum coverage: a basic\nopen-and-use test and per-attribute tests alongside required fields. Use\nthe `provider-test-patterns` skill (if available) — its ephemeral testing\nreference covers the echoprovider setup, version gating\n(`tfversion.SkipBelow(tfversion.Version1_10_0)`), and multi-step patterns.\n\n## Documentation\n\nRegistry docs live at `docs/ephemeral-resources/<name>.md`, generated by\n`tfplugindocs` like every other page type.
