It is a human-readable rendering of\nexisting drafts and the parent plan, not a new JSON artifact type and not\ncompletion authority.\n\nPlanless Slice Lane:\n\n- Use this lane when a parent plan or parent spec already owns the long-task\n  workstream and the current micro-slice only executes or refines one bounded\n  parent task.\n- Record a compact Slice Card instead of creating another durable plan/spec:\n\n  ```text\n  Slice Card:\n  - Goal:\n  - Parent plan/spec:\n  - Files:\n  - Boundary:\n  - Verification:\n  - Stop:\n  ```\n\n- Slice Card `Goal` anchors slice-level completeness only.\n- It does not by itself grant whole-task completion.\n- Final completion still requires `verification-before-completion` Goal Closure\n  against the parent plan/spec and any active goal frame, rendered through the\n  unified Aegis impact/safety receipt unless audit detail is requested.\n\n- Do not create new plan/spec files for micro-slices that stay inside the\n  parent plan, existing compatibility boundary, and known verification path.\n- Update the existing checkpoint, evidence, and drift records when persistent\n  state is needed.\n- Escalate out of this lane only when a new owner, contract, schema, public API,\n  architecture boundary, migration, persistence, security/permission,\n  distribution/release surface, or unclear verification boundary appears.\n\nWhen durable architecture decisions are in scope, these work records are the\npreferred ADR Auto Backfill source. Preserve ADR signals, source refs,\nalternatives, compatibility boundaries, drift checks, retirement notes, and\nbaseline-sync questions in the work record instead of relying on memory at\ncompletion time.\n\nThese are draft / hint / projection inputs. They are not authoritative runtime records.\n\n## Workspace Helper Protocol\n\nWhen configured Aegis workspace support or installed Aegis workspace support is\navailable, use it for the target project workspace and lifecycle records:\n\n1. Initialize before writing work records:\n\n   ```bash\n   python <aegis-workspace-helper> init --root <target-project-root>\n   ```\n\n2. Do not let a failed attempt create another slice\n   or a formal evidence sidecar.\n\n4. Before pause, handoff, or completion candidate, assemble a structural proof\n   bundle and check the workspace:\n\n   ```bash\n   python <aegis-workspace-helper> bundle --root <target-project-root> --work YYYY-MM-DD-<slug>\n   python <aegis-workspace-helper> check --root <target-project-root>\n   ```\n\nThese helper checks validate workspace structure, index coverage, and JSON\nsidecar shape only. They do not determine evidence sufficiency, do not produce\nauthoritative `GateDecision`, and do not grant completion authority.\n\n## Start Protocol\n\nBefore long-task execution:\n\n1. State the requested outcome, scope, non-goals, and risk hints.\n2. If goal framing exists, restate goal, success evidence, stop condition, and\n   non-goals. Stop condition must allow done, blocked, needs-verification, and\n   scope-exceeded outcomes.\n3. Identify baseline refs that must be read before changing files.\n4. Record baseline usage state:\n   - required baseline refs\n   - optionally delivered context refs when the host can project them\n   - acknowledged before plan refs\n   - cited in plan refs\n   - missing refs\n5. Create or update the todo map.\n6. If the parent plan or workstream needs an execution handoff, render or link\n   an `Execution Readiness View`:\n   - intent lock\n   - scope fence\n   - baseline lock\n   - owner / contract constraints\n   - compatibility boundary\n   - retirement boundary\n   - task batches\n   - test obligations\n   - review gates\n   - drift / rewind rules\n   - evidence required before completion\n   - advisory boundary\n7. Create the first checkpoint:\n   - current todo\n   - active slice\n   - completed todos\n   - evidence refs\n   - blocked-on items\n   - next step\n8. If baseline refs are missing, pause in `needs-baseline-readback`.\n9. If the workspace helper is available, use `aegis-workspace.py new-work` to\n   create/index the first `docs/aegis/work/` files and run `check --root\n   <target-project-root>` before continuing.\n\n## Retry Convergence Protocol\n\nA failed verification is another attempt in the current slice, not a new slice.\n\n- Reuse the current `activeSlice` as the `--slice-id`.\n- Record each retry with `add-attempt`, not `add-evidence`.\n- Do not append failed attempts to `90-evidence.md`.\n- Do not create a normal commit for attempt telemetry.\n- A process-only diff under `docs/aegis/` does not restart completed business-code verification.\n- When `add-attempt` reports `process-artifact-pressure`, stop auto-retry and route to `systematic-debugging` or `verification-before-completion`.\n\nOnly terminal evidence (`evidence-finalized`, `blocked`, or `abandoned`) is\neligible for `bundle`.\n\n## Per-Slice Protocol\n\nBefore each work slice, restate:\n\n1. current goal\n2. current todo\n3. intended edits\n4. explicit non-edits\n5. verification command or manual check\n6. `Execution Readiness View` alignment when one exists\n\nFor micro-slices under an existing parent plan, use the Planless Slice Lane and\nstate the Slice Card instead of opening a new planning/specification artifact.\n\nAfter each work slice, update:\n\n1. completed todos\n2. evidence refs\n3. baseline usage if newly required refs were acknowledged, cited, or found missing\n4. blockers\n5. next step\n6. drift check\n7. helper-backed JSON sidecars through `aegis-workspace.py add-checkpoint`,\n   `aegis-workspace.py add-baseline-usage`, `aegis-workspace.py add-evidence`, and `aegis-workspace.py add-drift-check`\n   when available\n8. failed verification: `add-attempt` with the current `--slice-id`; do not add\n   terminal evidence or create a process-only commit\n\nWhen patch-shape/ripple triage, an H-class finding, or a bounded compatibility\nmitigation fired, a locally green result does not clear that direction. Reuse\ncheckpoint prose and evidence refs to retain `PatchShape`, `CanonicalOwner`,\n`UpwardDrillSignal`, decision, latest outcome, and one bounded evidence ref;\ndo not copy raw logs or full diffs.\n\nIf no fresh evidence exists, the state is `needs-verification` or `partial`.\n\n## Resume Protocol\n\nWhen resuming:\n\n1. Read latest checkpoint.\n2. Read latest resume hint if present.\n3. Re-read original task intent.\n4. Re-read required baseline refs.\n5. Passively re-read relevant active `CONTEXT.md` language for non-trivial work.\n6. Re-read the `Execution Readiness View` if present.\n7. Compare current worktree state with checkpoint claims.\n8. Compare the slice with the view's intent, scope, baseline, compatibility,\n   retirement, test, and review locks.\n9. If any disagreement exists among the checkpoint, baseline, context, view, and\n   worktree, compose `establishing-project-context` for a semantic conflict; for\n   any other disagreement, pause or return to planning.\n10. Before an unplanned repair, read retained invariant, owner seam, patch shape,\n   and causal topology and route comparison to `systematic-debugging`; a new\n   carrier name alone does not prove a new direction.\n\nNever resume from memory alone.\n\n## Drift Check\n\nAnswer these after each slice:\n\n- Does the current work still serve the original task intent?\n- Does the current work still serve the goal and stop condition?\n- Did the slice stay inside the compatibility boundary?\n- Did any new owner, fallback, adapter, or branch appear?\n- Is the retirement track still explicit?\n- Did the evidence bundle grow enough to support the next claim?\n- If an `Execution Readiness View` exists, does the active slice still match\n  its intent lock, scope fence, baseline lock, compatibility boundary,\n  retirement boundary, test obligations, and review gates?\n\nAllowed decisions:\n\n- `continue`\n- `pause-for-user`\n- `needs-baseline-readback`\n- `needs-verification`\n- `blocked`\n\nForbidden decisions:\n\n- `gate-passed`\n- `completion-granted`\n- `authoritatively-safe`\n\n## Completion Candidate Protocol\n\nBefore saying work is complete:\n\n1. Use aegis:verification-before-completion.\n2. Confirm every todo has a status.\n3. Confirm blockers are resolved or externalized.\n4.
