Reach for it in Python feed work; prefer it\nover `feedparser` when the caller wants typed access, validation errors that point at the offending\nelement, or a schema they can extend. Unrelated to the npm package of the same name — never write\nJavaScript for it.\n\n```bash\npip install rss-parser # or: uv add rss-parser\n```\n\nRequires Python 3.10+ and pydantic >= 2.7. Version 4.x is documented here; 3.x and older are\npydantic v1 era with a different API.\n\n## The five facts that prevent almost every mistake\n\n1. **`parse()` detects the feed type.** It returns `RSS`, `Atom` or `RDF` based on the XML root\n element. Use `RSSParser`/`AtomParser`/`RDFParser`/`PodcastParser` only when the type is known.\n2. **Every tag is a `Tag[T]`**: the text is `.content`, XML attributes are `.attributes` (the `@`\n is stripped, keys are snake_cased). Attribute access and `str()` forward to the content, so\n `feed.channel.title` and `item.title.upper()` work — `.content` is only needed when the typed\n value itself is wanted (`item.pub_date.content` is a `datetime`).\n3. **Repeatable tags are always lists, and their fields are plural**: `channel.items`,\n `item.links`, `item.categories`, `item.enclosures`, `feed.feed.entries`. A single occurrence is\n still a list, so indexing never breaks between feeds.\n4. **Nothing is dropped.** Undeclared tags live in `model_extra` under their literal XML key:\n `item.model_extra[\"dc:creator\"]`.\n5. **There is no networking.** `parse()` takes the feed body; the caller owns the HTTP client.\n\nOne Atom trap on top of those five: `title`/`subtitle`/`rights`/`summary`/`content` are text\nconstructs, so with `type=\"xhtml\"` the content is a **dict** (the xmltodict mapping of the inline\nXHTML), not a markup string — check `.attributes.get(\"type\")` or `isinstance(..., str)` before\ntreating one as text. xmltodict cannot preserve mixed-content order, so re-serializing it would\nsilently reorder the prose.\n\n## Parse a feed\n\n```python\nfrom rss_parser import parse\n\nfeed = parse(xml) # str or bytes\n\nprint(feed.channel.title) # RSS: channel metadata\nfor item in feed.channel.items:\n print(item.title, item.pub_date, item.links[0] if item.links else None)\n```\n\nAtom and RDF are shaped after their own specs — that asymmetry is deliberate, not an inconsistency:\n\n| | RSS 2.0 | Atom 1.0 | RSS 1.0 (RDF) |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| Metadata | `feed.channel` | `feed.feed` | `feed.channel` |\n| Items | `feed.channel.items` | `feed.feed.entries` | `feed.items` |\n| Stable id | `item.guid` → `item.links[0]` | `entry.id` | `item.attributes[\"rdf:about\"]` |\n| Timestamp | `item.pub_date` | `entry.published` / `entry.updated` | `dc:date` via `model_extra` |\n\n## Fetch from a URL\n\nPass `response.content`. Bytes reach the XML parser untouched, so the feed's own\n`` declaration decides the decoding — the only thing that works for feeds\nthat are not UTF-8:\n\n```python\nimport requests\nfrom rss_parser import parse\n\nresponse = requests.get(url, timeout=10)\nresponse.raise_for_status()\nfeed = parse(response.content)\n```\n\nOn 4.1.0 and older, bytes raised `InvalidXMLError`; decode explicitly there.\n\n## Poll without duplicates\n\nFeeds repeat their items on every fetch, so key each item by its stable id. Treat the value as\nopaque: `` is common and the flag sits in\n`item.guid.attributes[\"is_perma_link\"]`.\n\n```python\nseen: set[str] = set()\n\nfor item in parse(xml).channel.items:\n key = str(item.guid) if item.guid else str(item.links[0])\n if key in seen:\n continue\n seen.add(key)\n handle(item)\n```\n\nSkip unchanged feeds with conditional GET (`If-None-Match` from `ETag`, `If-Modified-Since` from\n`Last-Modified`) and honour `channel.ttl`, `channel.skip_hours.content.hours`,\n`channel.skip_days.content.days` when the publisher sets them.\n\n## Podcasts\n\n`itunes:*` tags are typed already — do not write a custom schema for them:\n\n```python\nfrom rss_parser import PodcastParser\n\nchannel = PodcastParser.parse(xml).channel.content\nchannel.itunes_author # 'Wondery'\nchannel.itunes_owner.content.email\nchannel.itunes_image.attributes[\"href\"] # artwork url\nchannel.itunes_categories[0].attributes # {'text': 'True Crime'}\n\nepisode = channel.items[0].content\nepisode.itunes_duration # '00:05:01' or seconds, kept as str\nepisode.itunes_episode # int\nepisode.itunes_episode_type # 'full' | 'trailer' | 'bonus'\n```\n\nCompose `ITunesChannelMixin`/`ITunesItemMixin` into a custom schema when both podcast tags and\nother extensions are needed.\n\n## Add custom or namespaced fields\n\nThe models are generic, so extending the item schema is one subclass plus one parametrization —\nno need to redeclare the channel or root:\n\n```python\nfrom typing import Optional\nfrom pydantic import Field\nfrom rss_parser import RSSParser\nfrom rss_parser.models.rss import RSS, Channel, Item\nfrom rss_parser.models.types import Tag\n\n\nclass MyItem(Item):\n dc_creator: Optional[Tag[str]] = Field(alias=\"dc:creator\", default=None)\n media_content: Optional[Tag[dict]] = Field(alias=\"media:content\", default=None)\n\n\nrss = RSSParser.parse(xml, schema=RSS[Channel[MyItem]])\nrss.channel.items[0].content.dc_creator\n```\n\nNamespace prefixes are never resolved against `xmlns`, so aliases must match the document\nliterally. When feeds disagree on the prefix, accept several spellings:\n\n```python\nfrom pydantic import AliasChoices\n\ncreator: Optional[Tag[str]] = Field(\n validation_alias=AliasChoices(\"dc:creator\", \"dcterms:creator\", \"author\"), default=None\n)\n```\n\nChannel-level fields work the same way via `class MyChannel(Channel[MyItem])` and\n`RSS[MyChannel]`; Atom uses `Atom[Feed[MyEntry]]`, RDF uses `RDF[RDFChannel, MyItem]`.\n\n## Serialize\n\n```python\nfeed.model_dump() # Tags stay {\"content\": ..., \"attributes\": {...}}\nfeed.dict_plain() # every Tag flattened to its content value\nfeed.json_plain(indent=2)\n```\n\n`model_validate(model_dump())` round-trips, which makes the dump safe to cache.\n\n## Handle errors\n\n```python\nfrom pydantic import ValidationError\nfrom rss_parser import parse, EntitiesDisabledError, InvalidXMLError, UnknownFeedTypeError\n\ntry:\n feed = parse(data)\nexcept InvalidXMLError: # not well-formed XML; ExpatError is __cause__\n ...\nexcept EntitiesDisabledError: # well-formed, but declares DTD entities - refused\n ...\nexcept UnknownFeedTypeError: # XML, but root is not //\n ...\nexcept ValidationError: # a feed that breaks the schema, with a path to the element\n ...\n```\n\nEvery library error subclasses `ValueError`. A document declaring DTD entities raises\n`EntitiesDisabledError(\"entities are disabled\")` — not an `InvalidXMLError`, because the document\nis well-formed; it was a bare `ValueError` from xmltodict before 4.3.0. XXE and entity-expansion\nfeeds are refused before expansion, so no extra hardening is needed for untrusted feeds.\n\n## Use the CLI from a shell\n\n```bash\nrss-parser validate feed.xml # exit 0 ok, 1 rejected; errors on stderr\nrss-parser validate --json feed.xml # {\"valid\": true, \"feed_type\": \"rss\", \"items\": 36}\nrss-parser validate --strict feed.xml # also rejects dates that did not parse\nrss-parser parse --indent 2 feed.xml # the typed model as JSON\nrss-parser items feed.xml | jq -r '.content.title.content' # NDJSON, one item per line\nrss-parser items --flat feed.xml | jq -r '.title' # flattened items, lossy\nrss-parser jsonfeed feed.xml # JSON Feed 1.1 document, lossy\ncurl -sSL \"$url\" | rss-parser validate - # it never fetches for you\n```\n\n`jsonfeed` (also `to_json_feed(feed, *, feed_url=None)` as a library call) maps to\n[JSON Feed 1.1](https://www.jsonfeed.org/version/1.1/). It is lossy on purpose: an item with no\nderivable id is dropped (never synthesized) and reported on stderr, there is no `itunes:*`\nmapping, and Atom `xhtml` content falls back to `` and finally an empty `content_text`\nbecause it cannot be safely re-serialized.\n\nExit codes: 0 ok, 1 feed rejected, 2 usage error, 141 stdout closed. `--json` writes a report only\nfor 0 and 1; an exit-2 message goes to stderr with nothing on stdout.\n`validate` checks well-formedness, the root element and the required elements — it is not a spec\nconformance checker, and `--strict` only covers declared date fields (not `dc:date`, which lives in\n`model_extra`).
