This skill fills the\npublishing metadata in `story.md`, writes the copyright page, builds and\nchecks the ebook and print interior, walks the author through\ndistribution, pricing, and launch, and keeps an inventory of the rights\nthe author holds. Planning files live under `publishing/` in the story\nproject. The author makes every account, upload, purchase, payment, and\nsignature; this skill prepares, checks, and records.\n\n## Prerequisites\n\nA story project whose manuscript is final or nearly so. Verify `story.md`\nexists and read `title`, `status`, `author` or `authors`, `genre`,\n`series`, `book-number`, `cover`, and any publishing fields already set. If\n`status` is not `complete`, say that metadata and launch planning can start\nnow but the files must be rebuilt after the last revision.\n\n## When to Use\n\n- Filling retailer metadata: ISBN, publisher, date, description, keywords,\n  BISAC subjects, language, cover alt text, AI disclosure\n- Writing the copyright page or checking epigraph and lyric permissions\n- Building and checking the EPUB or the print interior; choosing trim size\n- Choosing retailers and exclusivity, setting prices, planning a launch\n- Recording rights, reviewing a contract offer, drafting a rights one-sheet\n- NOT for query letters, agent submission, synopsis, or blurb drafting\n  (use `submission`; this skill reuses its blurb)\n- NOT for audiobook scripts, screenplays, translations, or other formats\n  (use `adaptation`)\n- NOT for revising the manuscript (use `revision-continuity`)\n\n## Hard Rules\n\n- Never invent an ISBN, publisher or imprint name, publication date, price,\n  review, endorsement, sales figure, award, or bestseller claim. Ask, or\n  leave a `[TODO: author to supply]` placeholder.\n- Never assert current retailer specs, royalty rates, or fees as fact.\n  They change. Give the working figure as a starting point and tell the\n  author to check the retailer's current spec before relying on it.\n- Legal, tax, and contract matters are **not legal or tax advice**. Flag\n  issues, explain why they matter, and recommend an agent, a publishing\n  lawyer, an accountant, or an author organization's contract-vetting\n  service.\n- Never create accounts, upload, buy, sign, or send. The author does.\n- `ai-disclosure` must say what actually happened. Ask the author how AI\n  tools were used; never minimise it.\n\n## Workflow\n\n### 1. Readiness\n\n```shell\nstory validate .\nstory links .\nstory continuity .\nstory prose .\nstory wordcount . --write\nstory build . --format metadata\n```\n\nThe metadata sheet lists every missing field in its readiness checklist.\nReport it with the validate findings. `validate` warns about\n`permission: pending` only once the story `status` is `complete`, and\nabout a research note with a `risk` but no `reviewed-by` only when a final\nor complete chapter uses it, so also search the files directly before\npublication:\n\n```shell\ngrep -l \"permission: pending\" matter/*.md\ngrep -l \"^risk:\" research/*.md\n```\n\nReport every pending permission, and every risky note without\n`reviewed-by`, whatever the chapter status. If `story passes .` shows unfinished revision passes, say so\nbefore production starts.\n\n### 2. Metadata\n\nFill the `story.md` fields with `references/metadata-checklist.md`:\n`isbn`, `publisher`, `publication-date`, `language`, `description`,\n`keywords`, `subjects`, `copyright`, `cover-alt`, `ai-disclosure`, and\n`authors` for co-written books. Take the description from\n`submission/blurb.md` when it exists (the `submission` skill drafts it).\nRebuild the sheet and repeat until the checklist is clean:\n\n```shell\nstory validate .\nstory build . --format metadata\n```\n\n### 3. ISBNs and copyright page\n\n1. Explain the ISBN choices in `references/metadata-checklist.md`: one\n   ISBN per format and edition, who issues them in the author's country,\n   and the trade-offs of a free retailer ISBN. Record the ebook or print\n   ISBN the author supplies in `isbn`.\n2. Create the copyright page and fill it from\n   `references/copyright-page.md`:\n\n   ```shell\n   story add matter \"Copyright\" --order 0\n   ```\n\n   Use an `order` lower than every other front page so it sits first\n   (behind the title page); `story add matter` otherwise takes the next\n   free number. Set `heading: false`. Without this page, every build\n   except Shunn generates a minimal one from `copyright`; write it by hand when the book needs credits, permissions,\n   or a Library of Congress line.\n3. For each epigraph, lyric, or quoted page in `matter/`, set `permission`\n   (`not-needed`, `pending`, `granted`, `public-domain`), `rights-holder`,\n   and `credit`. Quoting song lyrics almost always needs permission.\n\n### 4. Ebook\n\n```shell\nstory build . --format epub\n```\n\nThe EPUB carries accessibility metadata, language, semantic chapter and\nmatter markup, a landmarks nav, the cover with `cover-alt`, and the\nmetadata fields. If the author has EPUBCheck or Ace by DAISY installed,\nrun them on the file in `dist/` (`java -jar epubcheck.jar <file>.epub`,\n`ace <file>.epub`) and fix errors before upload. Ask the author to open it\nin at least one reading app and in the retailer's previewer.\n\n### 5. Print interior\n\nFollow `references/print-interior.md`:\n\n1. Choose the trim size with the author (`5x8`, `5.25x8`, `5.5x8.5`, `6x9`,\n   `a5`), then build:\n\n   ```shell\n   story build . --format print --trim 6x9\n   ```\n\n2. Render the HTML to PDF with a paged-media engine the author has\n   (`pagedjs-cli`, WeasyPrint, or Prince). The CLI bundles none.\n3. Check the rendered PDF against the printer's file requirements; use its\n   actual page count for the cover.\n4. Tell the author to get the spine width and full cover wrap template from\n   the printer's cover calculator, and to order a printed proof before\n   release.\n\n### 6. Distribution and pricing\n\nLay out the options in `references/launch-plan.md`: KDP, IngramSpark,\nDraft2Digital or another aggregator, and direct sales, plus the trade-off\nbetween exclusivity (KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited) and going wide. The\nauthor decides; record the choices in `publishing/launch-plan.md`. Discuss\npricing with the considerations in the same reference, not a formula.\n\n### 7. Retailer page copy\n\nDraft into `publishing/retailer-copy.md`: a short description (the first\ntwo lines, which show before \"read more\"), the long description (checked\nagainst the metadata sheet's character count), series-page copy when\n`series` is set, and A+ or enhanced-content ideas (a comparison chart of\nseries books, a character or map panel, a mood image with a quote). Follow\n`../submission/references/blurb.md` for the copy itself. Copy the chosen\nlong description into `description`.\n\n### 8. Launch\n\nBuild `publishing/launch-plan.md` from the T-90 to T+30 timeline in\n`references/launch-plan.md`: ARC team, newsletter and reader magnet, street\nteam, preorder, launch week, and paid ads with a test budget and stop\nrules. Update the plan as the author reports what happened; never fill in\nresults they did not give you.\n\n### 9. Rights and contracts\n\n1. Keep `publishing/rights.md` from the inventory in\n   `references/rights-one-sheet.md`: every right (print, ebook, audio,\n   translation by language or territory, film and TV, and the rest), who\n   holds it, the term, and the reversion terms.\n2. When the author has a contract offer, read it against\n   `references/contract-red-flags.md` and list each clause that matches a\n   red flag with the question to ask. State that this is not legal advice\n   and recommend a lawyer or agent before signing.\n3. For rights the author wants to license, draft a one-sheet from\n   `references/rights-one-sheet.md`.\n\n## Conventions\n\n- Planning files: `publishing/launch-plan.md`,\n  `publishing/retailer-copy.md`, `publishing/rights.md`,\n  `publishing/one-sheet-{right}.md` (for example\n  `publishing/one-sheet-audio.md`).\n- Each file has YAML frontmatter with a `type` (`launch-plan`,\n  `retailer-copy`, `rights-inventory`, `rights-one-sheet`) and\n  `updated: YYYY-MM-DD`.\n- `publishing/` is outside the story model: the CLI does not validate it\n  and builds never include it. Build output in `dist/` is disposable;\n  rebuild it rather than editing it.\n- One `story.md` holds one edition's metadata. When the ebook and print\n  ISBNs differ, record the one being built in `isbn`, set it before each\n  build, and keep both in the copyright page and `publishing/rights.md`.\n- Dates are `YYYY-MM-DD`. Word counts come from `story wordcount .`.\n- After any manuscript change, rebuild every format and recheck page count\n  and spine width before re-uploading.\n\n## CLI Maintenance\n\nUse the Story CLI when it is available. If `story` is not installed, use `bun run story --` from the Story Skills repository checkout or the bundled fallback `node ../story-maintenance/scripts/story.js` with the same arguments, resolving the path relative to this skill folder.
