NOT for creating the style sheet or checking voice consistency (use voice-style).\n---\n\n# Line Editing\n\n## Overview\n\nOwn the prose-quality passes that come after structure is settled: the\nline edit (sentence clarity, rhythm, precision, voice), character-voice\ndifferentiation, the copyedit against `style-sheet.md`, a read-aloud pass,\nand a proof pass on a built copy. Every change is proposed with a\nbefore/after and a one-line rationale so the author can accept or reject\nit. The author's voice is the standard, not the agent's taste. The\n`better-writing` skill, when installed, is an optional complement for\nanti-generic checks; this skill does not depend on it.\n\n## Prerequisites\n\nA story project with `story.md` and drafted chapters (status `draft` or\nlater). Read `style-sheet.md` if present; if it is missing or thin, build\nit first with the `voice-style` skill, because the copyedit checks against\nit.\n\n## Language\n\nRead `language` in `story.md` (a BCP 47 tag such as `en-GB`, `fr`, or\n`ja`; a missing field means `en`). Edit in that language and to its\ngrammar and conventions, and write edit notes in the language the user\nworks in with you, quoting the prose exactly as written. The checklists'\nword-level advice (filter words, -ly adverbs, *said*, dialogue\npunctuation) is English: for another language, apply its aim, not its\nword lists, and take dialogue and punctuation from the style sheet and\n`references/language-conventions.md`. When `story prose` or\n`story voices` reports a check skipped for the book's language, or a\ncheck plainly does not fit it, do that pass by reading.\n\n## When to Use\n\n- A chapter's structure is settled and the prose needs polish\n- Dialogue sounds the same from every speaker\n- Preparing a manuscript for beta readers, an editor, or submission\n- The `line`, `copyedit`, or `proof` revision pass is next in `story passes`\n- NOT for structural, plot, or continuity revision (use `revision-continuity`; line-edit only after those passes, or the polish is wasted)\n- NOT for setting house style or the voice description (use `voice-style`; this skill applies it)\n- NOT for scene-level craft such as deep POV, subtext, or exposition strategy (use `scene-craft`)\n- NOT for acting on external reader notes (use `feedback-triage`)\n- NOT for writing or scanning verse (use `verse-craft`); this skill only\n  flags rhymes that slipped into prose by accident\n\n## Workflow\n\n### 1. Scope and permission\n\n1. Ask which chapters and which pass: line edit, voice differentiation,\n   copyedit, read-aloud, or proof. Default order is the one below.\n2. Ask how heavy the edit should be: **light** (errors and clear\n   improvements only), **medium** (tighten and clarify), or **heavy**\n   (restructure sentences and paragraphs). Default to light.\n3. Never rewrite a passage wholesale without explicit permission. Propose\n   edits; apply only what the author accepts, or apply all on explicit\n   instruction.\n4. Snapshot before a multi-chapter pass (see Draft Snapshots in the\n   `revision-continuity` skill), and mark the pass in progress. If\n   `story.md` has no `revision-passes` yet, `story passes . --init` writes\n   the default ladder first; `story passes .` shows where the book is.\n\n```shell\nstory passes . --start line\n```\n\n### 2. Line edit\n\n1. Read `story.md` (POV, tense, Tone & Style), the style sheet's Voice\n   section, and the chapter. Run `story prose .` for the chapter's counts.\n   If the style sheet has no `samples`, suggest the author list an\n   earlier book or chapters they are happy with (see the `voice-style`\n   skill), so the counts are measured against their own voice. A\n   `prose-baseline-*` warning shows where a chapter drifts from it: use\n   it to find passages to reread, and keep any drift the author meant.\n2. Work paragraph by paragraph with `references/line-edit-checklist.md`:\n   clarity, precision, economy, rhythm, POV distance, and voice.\n3. Present edits in the format in `references/edit-note-format.md`:\n   location, before, after, and one line of rationale. Group by\n   paragraph; lead with the highest-impact changes; cap a batch at about\n   20 so the author can review them.\n4. Leave passages that are unusual but deliberate. When unsure whether a\n   quirk is voice or error, ask.\n5. To check a rewritten passage before putting it in the chapter, pipe it\n   in: `story prose - < rewrite.md` lints it against the style sheet, and\n   `story voices - < rewrite.md` checks its dialogue against the\n   characters' `voice-avoid` lists.\n\n### 3. Differentiate character voices\n\n```shell\nstory voices .\n```\n\nThe report fingerprints each character's attributed dialogue (sentence\nlength, contractions, questions, exclamations, signature words) and warns\nwhen two voices are near-identical, when a character says a\n`voice-avoid` word, and when a `voice-words` entry never appears.\n\n1. For near-identical pairs, read both characters' Voice & Speech\n   Patterns sections and propose line-level changes that follow them:\n   vocabulary, sentence length, what each avoids saying, how each deflects.\n   See the voice section of `references/line-edit-checklist.md`.\n2. If a character file has no voice notes, propose `voice-words` and\n   `voice-avoid` lists drawn from their best existing lines, and ask\n   before adding them to the character file.\n3. A line is attributed only when the narration names the speaker next\n   to a speech verb or, failing that, names exactly one character in the\n   paragraph. Pronoun tags (`she said`) and untagged lines are invisible\n   to the report, so the POV character in close third is often\n   under-counted; read those lines by hand, or name the tags in a sample\n   chapter and rerun. The near-identical warning reads \"X and Y may sound\n   alike\" and needs five or more lines from each character.\n\n### 4. Copyedit\n\n1. Mark the pass: `story passes . --start copyedit`.\n2. Run `story prose .` and fix every avoided spelling. Then work through\n   `references/copyedit-checklist.md` against `style-sheet.md`: grammar,\n   punctuation, dialogue punctuation, capitalisation, hyphenation,\n   numbers, and consistency of names and terms (check the glossary). For\n   a book not in English, take dialogue and punctuation conventions from\n   `references/language-conventions.md`; if the style sheet has not\n   recorded them, settle them with the author first.\n3. Record every new decision in `style-sheet.md` in the same change, so\n   the next chapter follows it.\n4. Tell the user plainly: this is a consistency and correctness pass, not\n   a substitute for a professional copyeditor on a book going to print.\n\n### 5. Read-aloud pass\n\nFollow `references/read-aloud-guide.md`. Build the narration script:\n\n```shell\nstory build . --format narration\n```\n\nOffer to play chapters with the system's text-to-speech if one is\ninstalled (`say` on macOS; `espeak-ng` or `spd-say` on Linux). Check with\n`command -v`; ask before installing anything. Choose a voice for the\nbook's `language` (`say -v '?'` and `espeak-ng --voices` list them); an\nEnglish voice reading another language is no test of the prose. Listen for stumbles,\nunintended rhymes, tongue-twisters, and runs of same-length sentences;\nrecord them as edit notes.\n\n### 6. Proof pass\n\n1. Mark the pass: `story passes . --start proof`.\n2. Build the copy the reader will see:\n\n```shell\nstory build . --format html\nstory build . --format print --trim 6x9\n```\n\n3. Proof against `references/copyedit-checklist.md`'s proof section:\n   typos introduced by editing, doubled or missing words, broken scene\n   breaks, chapter headings, matter pages, widows and orphans in the print\n   copy. Cite locations by the HTML copy's paragraph anchors (`ch03-p12`).\n4. Rendering the print HTML to PDF needs a paged-media engine the user\n   installs (Paged.js CLI, WeasyPrint, or Prince); ask before installing.\n\n### 7. Close the pass\n\n1. Summarise what changed, what was kept on purpose, and any style-sheet\n   or character-file updates.\n2. Update chapter `status` only when the author agrees (`draft` to\n   `revised`).\n3. Mark the pass done, for example `story passes . --done line`, and run\n   CLI Maintenance.\n\n## Conventions\n\n- The author's voice wins. Edit toward what the prose is already trying\n  to do, not toward a generic \"good prose\" standard.\n- One rationale line per change, naming the effect (*clearer subject*,\n  *cuts a filter word*, *restores past tense*), never \"sounds better\".\n- Edits are made directly in the chapter markdown, below `## Chapter\n  Text`; never through a script that rewrites prose in bulk.\n- Style decisions go in `style-sheet.md`; voice decisions about a\n  character go in the character file (`voice-words`, `voice-avoid`, Voice\n  & Speech Patterns), which stays canon.\n- A line edit does not change events, facts, or who knows what. If an\n  edit would, stop and hand it to `revision-continuity`.\n\n## CLI Maintenance\n\nUse the Story CLI when it is available. If `story` is not installed, use\n`bun run story --` from the Story Skills repository checkout or the bundled\nfallback `node ../story-maintenance/scripts/story.js` with the same\narguments, resolving the path relative to this skill folder.
