A bare `c8ctl deploy process.bpmn` then silently writes there.\n\n- Run `c8ctl which profile` first. If the name suggests a shared environment, confirm with the user before deploying.\n- **Always pass `--profile=<name>` explicitly** on `deploy` and other mutating commands (`run`, `cancel`, `resolve`, `complete`, `publish`, `watch`).\n- For validation deploys (just running the change once to check it works), prefer `--profile=local` against a running c8run cluster — `c8ctl cluster start` if not running.\n\nSee **camunda-c8ctl** for the authoritative cluster-safety rules.\n\n**Example** — deploy a single BPMN file to the local profile:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl deploy process.bpmn --profile=local\n```\n\nDeploy multiple resources at once (BPMN, DMN, forms):\n\n```bash\nc8ctl deploy process.bpmn decision.dmn approval-form.form\n```\n\nDeploy an entire directory (recursive):\n\n```bash\nc8ctl deploy ./my-project\n```\n\nPre-deploy checks (recommended):\n\n1. Lint BPMN before deployment:\n\n   ```bash\n   c8ctl bpmn lint process.bpmn\n   ```\n\n2. Validate DMN and form files if present (see **camunda-dmn** and **camunda-forms** workflows), then deploy only the resources that are ready.\n\nSpring Boot resource-tree tip:\n\n- In projects that keep deployables under `src/main/resources/`, prefer deploying `processes/`, `decisions/`, and `forms/` paths explicitly.\n- Avoid deploying the parent `src/main/resources` directory wholesale when it contains non-deployable files (`application.yaml`, `application.properties`, etc.).\n\nExample:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl deploy \\\n  src/main/resources/processes \\\n  src/main/resources/decisions \\\n  src/main/resources/forms \\\n  --profile=local\n```\n\nAfter deploying, verify:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl list pd\nc8ctl search pd --iname=\"MyProcess\"\n```\n\nEach deployment creates a new version of any resource it contains. Use `c8ctl list pd --fields Key,Name,Version` to see versions.\n\n### Starting Process Instances\n\nPick the start verb by intent:\n\n| Need | Command |\n|---|---|\n| Start and return immediately (default) | `c8ctl create pi --id <bpmnProcessId> [--variables '{...}']` |\n| Deploy + start in one shot | `c8ctl run <file.bpmn> [--variables '{...}']` |\n| Start and block until completion | `c8ctl await pi --id <bpmnProcessId> [--variables '{...}']` |\n\nCreate an instance for a deployed process:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl create pi --id MyProcess\n```\n\nWith input variables:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl create pi --id MyProcess --variables '{\"orderId\": \"ORD-123\", \"amount\": 1500}'\n```\n\n`--id` maps to `<bpmn:process id=\"...\">` (the BPMN process ID), not the numeric process-definition key.\n\nDeploy and start in one step:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl run process.bpmn --variables '{\"orderId\": \"ORD-123\"}'\n```\n\nStart and block until the instance completes (useful for tests / smoke checks):\n\n```bash\nc8ctl await pi --id MyProcess --variables '{\"orderId\": \"ORD-123\"}'\n```\n\nWith a custom request timeout:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl await pi --id MyProcess --requestTimeout 60000\n```\n\n**Not for long-running activities.** `await pi` uses the cluster's start-and-wait REST endpoint, which times out before any single activity that runs longer than the request timeout (LLM agents, slow HTTP calls, user tasks). The timed-out response carries no instance key, so you can't follow up on the partial run. For those processes, use `c8ctl create pi` and poll `c8ctl get pi <key>` until terminal state, or fall back to `c8ctl search pi --state=ACTIVE` to recover the orphaned instance after a failed `await`.\n\nFor scripting, run `create pi` with `--json`, capture the returned `key` field (the process-instance key), then use it for follow-up operations (`c8ctl get pi <key>`, `c8ctl cancel pi <key>`, incident lookups by process-instance key).\n\n### Watch Mode (Development)\n\nAuto-redeploy on file changes during local development:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl watch ./my-project\n```\n\nWatches `.bpmn`, `.dmn`, and `.form` files and redeploys on save.\n\n### Inspecting Process Instances\n\nList active instances:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl list pi\n```\n\nSearch by process name (`i` prefix means case-insensitive substring match):\n\n```bash\nc8ctl search pi --iprocessDefinitionName=\"MyProcess\"\n```\n\nGet instance details with variables:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl get pi <instanceKey> --variables\n```\n\nDump variable values for a specific instance (use `--fullValue` to avoid truncation):\n\n```bash\nc8ctl search variables --processInstanceKey=<key> --fullValue\n```\n\nRetrieve the deployed BPMN XML for a process definition:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl get pd <key> --xml\n```\n\n### Resolving Incidents\n\nIncidents are the cluster's way of pausing an instance when something fails non-recoverably (FEEL error, missing variable, connector failure, job timeout exceeded retries). Always inspect before resolving.\n\n**First-response triage** — when a user reports \"instance X is stuck\", run these four in sequence to assess before deciding to resolve:\n\n```bash\nPI=<instanceKey>\nc8ctl get pi $PI                                              # state (ACTIVE = stuck on a step), processDefinitionId\nc8ctl search inc --processInstanceKey=$PI                     # any incidents on this PI, with errorType\nc8ctl search variables --processInstanceKey=$PI --fullValue   # variables at the failure point\nc8ctl get inc <incidentKey> --json                            # full error message\n```\n\nThe four together usually localise the cause without needing to open Operate.\n\nList active incidents:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl list inc\nc8ctl search inc --state=ACTIVE\n```\n\nFilter by error message:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl search inc --ierrorMessage=\"Connection refused\"\n```\n\n**Debug workflow** when a process has an incident:\n\n1. **Find the incident** and read the error type + message:\n\n   ```bash\n   c8ctl search inc --state=ACTIVE\n   ```\n\n2. **Inspect the instance variables** at the failure point:\n\n   ```bash\n   c8ctl search variables --processInstanceKey=<key> --fullValue\n   ```\n\n3. **Identify root cause**. Common categories:\n   - FEEL error (EXTRACT_VALUE_ERROR / CONDITION_ERROR) → cross-ref **camunda-feel** for expression fixes; check for dotted-variable shadowing or null inputs\n   - Job worker missing or timing out → check the `<zeebe:taskDefinition type=\"...\">` matches a running worker\n   - Connector misconfiguration → cross-ref **camunda-connectors** to fix the element template binding\n   - BPMN logic bug → cross-ref **camunda-bpmn** to fix and redeploy\n\n4. **Fix the underlying issue** (BPMN edit, connector reconfig, worker fix, or variable correction).\n\n5. **Resolve the incident** to retry the failed step:\n\n   ```bash\n   c8ctl resolve inc <incidentKey>\n   ```\n\nResolving without fixing the root cause just re-triggers the same incident. Always fix first.\n\n### Completing User Tasks\n\nList pending user tasks:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl list ut\n```\n\nComplete with output variables:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl complete ut <taskKey> --variables '{\"approved\": true, \"comments\": \"Looks good\"}'\n```\n\nVariable keys must match the form's component `key` values (see **camunda-forms**) — extra keys are ignored; missing required keys block completion downstream.\n\n### Publishing Correlation Messages\n\nPublish a message to wake up a waiting message event in an instance:\n\n```bash\nc8ctl publish msg <messageName> --correlationKey=<key> --variables '{\"status\": \"approved\"}'\n```\n\nThe correlation key must match the value resolved from the process's message subscription expression (typically a FEEL expression over a variable, e.g. `=orderId`).\n\n### Cancelling Instances\n\n```bash\nc8ctl cancel pi <instanceKey>\n```\n\n### Production monitoring loop\n\nUse this lightweight loop for ongoing process health checks:\n\n1. **Scan active incidents** — the command returns a flat JSON list; group or filter by `errorType` / `elementId` in your tooling or shell:\n\n   ```bash\n   c8ctl search inc --state=ACTIVE --json --fields=key,errorType,errorMessage,elementId,processInstanceKey\n   ```\n\n2. **Measure whether incidents are recurring** by inspecting the flat list for repeated `elementId` + similar `errorMessage` values across multiple instances. Recurrence signals a process/model/worker defect, not a one-off runtime glitch.\n3. **Correlate with variables and instance state** on at least one failing example:\n\n   ```bash\n   c8ctl get pi <instanceKey>\n   c8ctl search variables --processInstanceKey=<instanceKey> --fullValue\n   c8ctl get inc <incidentKey> --json\n   ```\n\n4. **Apply the smallest root-cause fix**, then resolve one incident and confirm new instances no longer fail in the same way. Repeat from step 1 until the flat list shows no active incidents of that type.\n\nFor SLA and throughput trends (not just incident triage), pair this runbook with your metrics tooling (Operate/Optimize dashboards) and feed findings back into BPMN changes or worker reliability work.\n\n### JSON Output for Scripting\n\nPass `--json` per call, optionally narrowed with `--fields`. Don't toggle session-wide output mode — see **camunda-c8ctl** for the why.\n\n```bash\nc8ctl list pi --json --fields=key,state,bpmnProcessId\nc8ctl list pd --json --fields=key,bpmnProcessId,version\nc8ctl get inc <key> --json\n```\n\n### Troubleshooting\n\n**Deployment fails** — Run `c8ctl bpmn lint process.bpmn` first (see **camunda-bpmn**). Most deploy errors are caught by the linter pre-deploy.\n\n**Process won't start** — Verify the process ID matches a deployed definition (`c8ctl list pd`). Check required input variables.\n\n**Instance hangs at a service task** — No worker is registered for that task type, the worker crashed, or the job timed out beyond max retries.
