Do not use to run suites; use night-market-operations.'\n---\n\n# Validation and QA: what counts as evidence here\n\nThis skill defines the evidence bar for claiming work complete, the\ncoverage and quality thresholds that gate merges, the golden regression\ntests that guard settled battles, and the procedure for adding tests.\nThe one-line thesis: a green check proves spec-satisfaction, not\ncorrectness, so every completion claim needs cited evidence and every\ntest needs proof it can fail.\n\n## The evidence bar\n\nNever claim \"should work\". Run the thing, capture the output, cite it.\nThe house discipline comes from `Skill(imbue:proof-of-work)`:\n\n1. Number every piece of evidence: `[E1]`, `[E2]`, each with the exact\n command and its captured output.\n2. Map each acceptance criterion to evidence with a verdict:\n `Criterion: [E2] -> PASS` or `-> FAIL`.\n3. Give the overall claim one of three statuses: `COMPLETE` (all\n criteria passed), `PARTIAL` (list blockers), `BLOCKED` (explain\n why). A blocked task reported as blocked with evidence is a\n successful report. A guessed \"done\" is not.\n4. The final response must not contain \"should work\", \"looks right\",\n or any other unverified confidence phrase.\n\n### Verifier integrity: never let the generator judge itself\n\nA passing verifier can mislead two ways (from the prover-verifier\nresearch, codified in commit `29081fda`, module\n`plugins/imbue/skills/proof-of-work/modules/verifier-integrity.md`):\n\n| Failure mode | What it looks like |\n|--------------|--------------------|\n| Wrong spec | The check confirms the code matches the spec, not that the spec matches intent |\n| Hollow check | `assert True`, a mock returning the expected value, a stubbed service: all green, all worthless |\n\nRules that follow:\n\n- The agent that wrote the code must not be the sole judge of whether\n the code works. Use an independent check: a fresh subagent, the real\n test suite, a human, or an end-to-end run the generator cannot\n influence.\n- Validate the spec separately from the code. A machine-checked pass\n against a wrong spec is confident, green, and wrong.\n- When reviewing a test, ask what change to the code would make it\n fail. If nothing would, it is not a test.\n\n## Iron Law TDD (Constitution rule 3)\n\nCONSTITUTION.md rule 3: no implementation without a failing test\nfirst. Scope:\n\n- Applies to every code change in plugin Python sources\n (`plugins/*/src/`, `plugins/*/scripts/`, `plugins/*/hooks/`).\n- Skill files, agent files, and prose docs are exempt. Their analogue\n is a structural validation test: every new skill needs a\n `test_skill_.py` proving the structure.\n\nA structural validation test asserts observable content in the skill\nfile: required sections exist, the referenced modules exist on disk,\ntables and examples the skill promises are present. Model on\n`plugins/imbue/tests/unit/skills/test_proof_of_work.py`, which checks\nSKILL.md sections, module files, and enforcement tables. Use\n `scripts/fix_coverage_threshold.py` to migrate a plugin still using\n the old location.\n- The script itself sets no minimum floor for `coverage_threshold`. If\n the key is absent, no `--cov-fail-under` flag is passed at all, so a\n plugin without the key has no coverage gate in the runner.\n- imbue's own `addopts` force `--cov=scripts` plus term and HTML\n coverage reports on every run, including single-file runs.\n\n## The tautological-test trap\n\nPR review here repeatedly catches tests that assert nothing. Evidence\nin history: `a94240e2` (12 tests of constants tightened to behavioral\ncoverage), `f1cbbcf1` (strengthened tautological assertions),\n`30e58586` (validation-floor regression test), `42f7ce84` (round-trip\ntest replacing a structure-only check). The pattern: a test that\nrestates the code, mocks the unit under test, or asserts a constant\nequals itself.\n\nThe counter-discipline is the revert test, executed by\n`sanctum:validate-pr`:\n\n1. Take the fix the PR claims to make.\n2. Edit the fixed line back to its broken state (working tree must be\n clean first, or the step is skipped as unsafe).\n3. Run the test that supposedly guards the fix.\n4. The test must FAIL against the reverted code. If it stays green,\n the test is a dead assertion, not a guard.\n5. Restore the fix.\n\nWhen writing a new test, apply the same standard preemptively: write\nthe test so it would catch the bug's return, then confirm it fails\nbefore the fix lands (that is the Iron Law's RED step).\n\n## Golden inventory: regression guards worth knowing\n\nThese tests lock in lessons from settled incidents. Do not weaken or\ndelete them without understanding the incident they guard.\n\n| Guard | Location | What it locks |\n|-------|----------|---------------|\n| py39 datetime alias | `plugins/leyline/tests/test_python39_compat.py` | AST-scans leyline source for `datetime.UTC` (a 3.11+ alias). Env-reading hooks were once silent no-ops for months (full record: night-market-failure-archaeology SB9). |\n\nWhen you fix an incident of a similar class, add its guard here in the\nsame spirit: an invariant test that fails loudly if the lesson is\nunlearned.\n\n## How to add tests\n\n### Layout and isolation\n\n- Each plugin owns `plugins//tests/` with `unit/`,\n `integration/` subdirectories and its own `conftest.py` and pytest\n config in the plugin's `pyproject.toml`.\n- Root `pyproject.toml` sets `norecursedirs = [\"plugins/*\", ...]`.\n Plugin tests MUST run per-plugin. Running them from the repo root\n causes ImportPathMismatchError from duplicate module names (the root\n `conftest.py` documents this).\n\n### Commands\n\n```bash\n# Single test file (fastest loop)\ncd plugins/imbue\nuv run pytest tests/unit/test_deferred_capture.py -x -q\n\n# Full suite for one plugin\ncd plugins/\nuv run python -m pytest tests/ --tb=short -q\n# or, where the plugin has a Makefile target:\nmake -C plugins/ test\n\n# Everything (what `make test` at root does)\n./scripts/run-plugin-tests.sh --all\n\n# Only plugins with staged changes\n./scripts/run-plugin-tests.sh --changed\n\n# Mutation testing for one plugin, locally\ncd plugins/\nuv run mutmut run --paths-to-mutate=scripts/,src/ --tests-dir=tests/\n```\n\n### Markers\n\nRoot pytest runs with `--strict-markers`, so only registered markers\nare legal. Registered in root `pyproject.toml`: `unit`, `integration`,\n`e2e`, `slow`, `network`, `plugin`, `skill`, `hook`, `command`, `bdd`,\n`benchmark` (skip benchmarks in CI with `-m \"not benchmark\"`).\n\n### Checklist for new code\n\n- [ ] Failing test written and observed RED before implementation\n (Iron Law).\n- [ ] Test would fail if the fix were reverted (revert-test standard).\n- [ ] Correct marker applied and test placed in `unit/` or\n `integration/` accordingly.\n- [ ] Plugin suite passes locally with its coverage flag:\n `uv run python -m pytest tests/ --cov-fail-under=`.\n- [ ] New skill files have a `test_skill_.py` structural test.\n\n## Failure-mode detection: silent failure in scanners\n\nThe most recurrent bug class in this repo is the swallowed error. In\nscanner-shaped code (anything that walks files and reports findings),\nthe signature is except-continue: a `try/except` that skips a file on\nmalformed input and reports success on the remainder. The scanner\nlooks healthy while ignoring exactly the inputs most likely to be\nbroken.\n\nThe house convention since commit `666171c3` (issue #575): a scanner\nthat cannot process an input emits an ADVISORY finding for it instead\nof skipping silently. Examples from that commit:\n\n- `check_hook_modernization.py` emits findings on malformed\n hooks.json, SyntaxError, or OSError instead of dropping the file.\n- pensive `harden/scanner.py` appends an ADVISORY finding for\n unreadable files under `--strict`.\n- minister `dora_metrics` warns and sets a partial flag on malformed\n tag lines instead of silently classifying the repo Elite.\n\nWhen reviewing or writing scanner code, grep for the pattern:\n\n```bash\nrg -n \"except .*:\\s*$\" -A2 plugins/
