The book builds from\n  `book/book.toml` (`src = \"src\"`, `create-missing = false`) and its\n  table of contents is `book/src/SUMMARY.md` (Getting Started, then\n  Plugins grouped by layer, then Reference).\n- The decision journal files do not exist in the working tree as of\n  2026-07-02. The `leyline:decision-journal` contract creates them on\n  first append. Do not scaffold them empty.\n- `docs/dependency-audit.md` and other dated reports are point-in-time\n  artifacts, not living docs of record.\n\n## Per-feature artifacts: overwritten each cycle\n\n`docs/project-brief.md`, `docs/specification.md`, and\n`docs/implementation-plan.md` are per-feature working documents. Each\nfeature cycle OVERWRITES them (current occupant as of 2026-07-02: the\ninsight-palace bridge, spec v0.1.0 Draft). Never treat their content as\npermanent record. If a decision inside them must outlive the feature,\npromote it to an ADR or a decision journal entry before the next cycle.\n\n## House prose style\n\nFull rules live in `.claude/rules/markdown-formatting.md` and\n`.claude/rules/slop-scan-for-docs.md`, with the detection catalog in\n`Skill(scribe:slop-detector)` modules. The load-bearing subset:\n\n- Wrap prose at 80 characters. Break at sentence boundaries first,\n  then clauses, then before conjunctions. Never wrap tables, code\n  blocks, headings, frontmatter, or URLs.\n- ATX headings only (`# Title`). Blank line before AND after every\n  heading and every list.\n- Reference-style links when an inline link pushes a line past 80\n  characters.\n- Em-dash target is zero in new prose (0-2 absolute max per file).\n  Use colons, periods, or parentheses. Never use a spaced double\n  dash as punctuation (a repo hook flags it).\n- American spelling. No semicolon splices. No smart quotes outside\n  code blocks.\n\n### The three slop layers\n\n\"Slop\" is the repo term for machine-generated prose patterns that\nwaste reader time or ship falsehoods. Every new or edited markdown\nfile passes three layers before it is done:\n\n1. **P0 critical (any hit fails outright)**: identity leaks (\"As a\n   large language model\"), hallucinated identifiers, paths, packages,\n   or URLs, and bare TODO/FIXME stubs without a tracked issue.\n   Constitution rule 4 makes an identity leak an automatic revert.\n2. **Document economy (scored 0-6, ship at 5+)**: thesis stated\n   first, every sentence carries weight, thesis echoed rather than\n   filler repeated. Rubric: `scribe:slop-detector` module\n   `document-economy.md`.\n3. **Sentence-level tiers**: banned vocabulary, negative parallelism,\n   throat-clearing openers, participial tails, and the 2026 pattern\n   set. Catalog: `scribe:slop-detector` module\n   `vocabulary-patterns.md` and the rule file's tier lists.\n\n### Slop-check CI\n\n`.github/workflows/slop-check.yml` runs on any PR touching a `.md`\nfile. It scans only files under `docs/` and `book/src/` and scores\neach file:\n\n```text\nscore = (tier1_hits * 3 + tier2_hits * 2 + em_dashes) / words * 100\n```\n\nAny file scoring above 3.0 fails the job and gets a PR comment.\nThe tier-1 and tier-2 word lists live in the workflow file itself\n(variables `TIER1` and `TIER2` in `slop-check.yml`); read them there\nrather than memorizing. Quick local pre-check on a doc you touched:\n\n```bash\ngrep -o '—' docs/your-file.md | wc -l\ngrep -oiE 'delve|tapestry|pivotal|meticulous|leveraging|comprehensive' \\\n  docs/your-file.md\n```\n\nFiles outside `docs/` and `book/src/` (plugin skills, READMEs) skip\nthis CI job but still fall under the rule file and review.\n\n## Reader-time budget (constitution rule 8)\n\nEvery doc is paid for in cumulative reader-time: audience size times\nread frequency times per-read time. Estimate that product BEFORE\ndrafting and match your writing time to it. A skill loaded hundreds\nof times a day earns hours of polish. A one-off report earns minutes.\nIf the budget is near zero, do not write the doc. Full framework:\n`scribe:slop-detector` module `document-economy.md`.\n\n## ADR conventions\n\nAn ADR (Architecture Decision Record) captures a decision that is\nexpensive to reverse. Never\n  delete or rewrite a superseded ADR. The\n  slop anti-goals (`scribe:slop-detector` module `anti-goals.md`)\n  explicitly exempt changelog history: it is a record, not prose to\n  polish.\n\n## Skill description contract\n\nEvery `SKILL.md` and command `description:` field is loaded into the\nmodel's skill-discovery budget, so length is policed:\n\n- Hard cap: 160 characters per description (hard fail).\n- Third person only. Template:\n  `[Verb phrase] [domain]. Use when [trigger]. Do not use when\n  [negative]; use [alternative] instead.`\n- Full guide: `docs/skill-description-guide.md`.\n\nTwo pre-commit hooks enforce it:\n\n```bash\npython3 plugins/abstract/scripts/validate_budget.py\npython3 scripts/fix_descriptions.py --check\n```\n\n`validate_budget.py` hard-fails any description over 160 chars and\nwarns when the ecosystem total approaches its budget (default 90,000\nchars, override via `SLASH_COMMAND_TOOL_CHAR_BUDGET`). Note:\n`docs/skill-description-guide.md` still cites an older 60,000-char\nceiling; the script value is current (the script is the enforcer).\n\n## The book (mdBook)\n\n- Structure: edit `book/src/SUMMARY.md` to add pages;\n  `create-missing = false` means a SUMMARY entry without a file\n  breaks the build.\n- Local build: `cd book && mdbook build` (output in `book/build/`).\n  mdbook is installed separately; CI uses the unpinned latest.\n- Deploy: `.github/workflows/deploy-book.yml` publishes to GitHub\n  Pages on push to master touching `book/**`. PRs touching `book/**`\n  get a build check.\n- `book/src/reference/capabilities-*.md` are generated from plugin\n  manifests.
