Covers registry add, search,\n the one-step add github.com/org/repo/skill form, --global, and sync.\nmetadata:\n author: quiver-playground\n version: \"1.0.0\"\n---\n\n# Onboard skills with qvr\n\n`qvr` installs **agent skills** (SKILL.md bundles) into a project from one or\nmore Git **registries**. qvr is agent-agnostic — it installs into whichever agent\ntarget directories you configure (e.g. `.claude/skills/`, `.agents/skills/`, …).\nA project's skill set lives in two committed files: **`qvr.toml`** is the\nhand-editable *intent* (which skills, which default agents), and **`qvr.lock`**\n(TOML, schema v5) is the resolved *proof* and the source of truth for what an\nagent actually loads — anything that lands in a managed agent directory without a\nmatching lock entry is hidden on the next sync. Mutating commands write through to\nboth files. This skill walks discovery → install → reconcile.\n\n## When to use this\n\n- The user wants to find a skill, add a registry, or install a skill with `qvr`.\n- A skill was copied into a managed agent directory by hand and \"isn't showing up\".\n- The user wants a skill available in **every** session (ambient/global), not\n just one project.\n\nDo **not** use this for editing/forking a skill (see `fork-and-publish-skill`),\nor for reproducing an existing set on another machine (see `reproduce-skill-env`).\n\n## Prerequisites\n\n1. Confirm the CLI is present and note the version:\n\n ```\n qvr --version\n ```\n\n2. Run from the project root where you want `qvr.toml` + `qvr.lock` to live. The\n files and the agent-target symlinks are written relative to the current\n directory.\n\n## Workflow\n\n### 1. Discover what's available\n\nSearch already-registered registries (substring match on name/description, with\noptional hard filters). At least one of a query, `--tag`, or `--author` is\nrequired:\n\n```\nqvr search pdf\nqvr search --tag testing --author acme\nqvr search review --full # untruncated descriptions\nqvr search forms --github # search GitHub for repos tagged agent-skills\n```\n\nList registries and the skills each one indexes:\n\n```\nqvr registry list\nqvr registry list anthropics/skills --full\n```\n\n### 2. Install a skill\n\n**One-step install (no prior registry add needed).** Point at a skill inside a\nrepo; qvr auto-registers the source, then installs:\n\n```\nqvr add github.com/org/repo/tdd # register org/repo, install tdd\nqvr add github.com/org/repo/tdd@v2 # pin a branch or tag\nqvr add github.com/org/repo # single-skill repo: install the lone skill\n```\n\n**By name, once the source is registered:**\n\n```\nqvr registry add https://github.com/acme-labs/agent-skills\nqvr add tdd\nqvr add tdd lint review # batch — each must resolve to a registered skill\nqvr add tdd@v2 # @ pins a branch, tag, or commit\n```\n\nUseful flags on `add`:\n\n- `--registry /` — scope resolution to one registry when the same\n skill name exists in several. **Use the full `/` name**, not a short\n alias.\n- `--target [,…]` — install into specific agent target dirs\n (e.g. `--target claude,cursor`). When omitted, targets resolve in order:\n `--target` flag > the project's `qvr.toml` `[project].default-targets` (set\n once via `qvr target add claude cursor`) > the machine-local `default_target`\n config. Run `qvr target list` to see every supported agent and the project's\n current defaults.\n- `--as ` — install under a different local name so two versions of\n the same skill can coexist (single skill only).\n- `--force` — allow replacing an existing lock entry pinned at a different ref.\n- `--no-scan` — skip the install-time security scan (see `verify-skill-supply-chain`\n before reaching for this).\n\n### 3. Install into the global (ambient) lane\n\nA globally installed skill appears in every session via `~/./skills/`,\nbacked by `~/.quiver/qvr.lock`:\n\n```\nqvr add --global diagnose\nqvr list --global\n```\n\n### 4. Reconcile on-disk state to the lock\n\n`qvr sync` makes the managed agent target dirs match the lock:\nmissing worktrees are restored, and managed symlinks **not** in the lock are\nremoved — this is the \"hidden by default\" guarantee that makes the lockfile\nauthoritative.\n\n```\nqvr sync # reconcile project\nqvr sync --global # reconcile the global lane\nqvr sync --dry-run # show what would change, touch nothing\n```\n\nA symlink whose target points outside qvr's managed cache (e.g. into your own\ndev dir) is left alone and surfaced in the output rather than deleted.\n\n### 5. Confirm the result\n\n```\nqvr list # installed skills from the lock\nqvr tree # grouped by registry / target\nqvr info tdd # metadata, provenance, file tree (local-only, fast)\n```\n\n## Gotchas\n\n- **The lockfile wins.** Dropping a folder into a managed agent directory does nothing\n durable — it's removed on the next `qvr sync` unless there's a lock entry.\n Install via `qvr add` (or `qvr add --local ` for an immutable copy of a\n local folder) instead.\n- **Registry names are nested `/`.** The bare clone lives at\n `~/.quiver/registries//.git/`. `--registry`, `registry update`, and\n `registry remove` all expect that full name. Override the inferred name with\n `qvr registry add --name ` only when two repos collide.\n- **Web tree/blob URLs are rejected.** Pass the repo URL, not a\n `github.com/org/repo/tree//` link — git can't clone a subdirectory.\n- **Skills resolve under two layouts:** nested `skills//` and flat-root\n `/` at the repo top level. Both work; you don't choose.\n\n## Troubleshooting\n\n- *\"skill not found\" on add* — the source isn't registered, or the name is\n ambiguous.
